I started feeding 2 cockatoos, then they brought their kids over, then their other relatives, next thing I know, there are 12 birds coming 3 times a day wanting to be fed. I had to stop feeding them out of concern for the noise they make disturbing the neighbours. I am back down to the original pair of cockatoos who come twice a day. I hide from the rest :)

yup - not feeding them anymore. They haven't been into my place again for almost a year now. They wrecked my 3 day old Christmas lights!
It all started when a cockatoo saw me feeding one of the magpie. The magpie was fine as it's always just one bird. Unlike the Cockatoo that normally flies as a group.

@@brad727 Actually, since I stopped feeding them, only a few have come, usually 1 or 2 at a time. I have fed them on occasion but when they think I am not home, they don't stay long. Fortunately they have not been destructive.

@@foiblegilneas1777 I'd love to see an experiment if a household fed a flock, and then suddenly stopped, but the household was nowhere to be seen, would they still put on the black-mailing behavior or would they understand that no-one was around to feed them. Would be interesting.

This is the best possible interaction with cockatoos. Trust me. I have a 27Yr old Umbrella. You can never really own a cockatoo so you might as well make friends with these guys. Take the opportunity to commune with this gregarious edge of nature and be thankful your hearing is in-tact along with all 10 fingers. Keeping these as pets is an exercise in patience. I just wish I went to the gym to exercise as much as my patience has. Nice Video.

We adopted a sulphar crested after she was left in a backyard cage for 35 years ..she is quiet, smart and loving. It’s luck of the draw or we actually know how to treat a bird that is in captivity. Some idiot kept her after being hit by a car and obviously after 35 years she can’t fly (has arthritis) Birds should not be kept as pets ,they should not be hatched and sold for pets. Injured birds should be taken to a wildlife shelter.

Darmin Axel most likely, birds actually have a brain too, and if a bird sees another bird being taken, it will most likely tell the other birds that humans are dangerous

Be prepared to spend more money fixing you wooden an plastic fixings as a result of this action! The birds themselves are beautiful but their crys are painful when there's more of them. The lorient were my favourite when I lived in OZ

Sunflower seeds are really fat for birds!! They aren’t toxic, but they aren’t really recommended either, you should give them veggies and fruits (not avocado or tomato, they are toxic)

Thanks - the seeds is from coles. However, I may have to stop feeding the cockatoos. They wreck my outdoor xmas light, only lasted 4 days 😥

I think that only applies for domesticated birds. Wild birdies do a lot more flying and expend a lot more energy than domesticated birds and actually can use the fat and calories that domesticated birds don't really need.
