    I totally agree with your love of soft corals. I’m not a fan of hard corals as they dont look alive. They could be plastic fake corals for all an observer knows.
    But there is no mistaking hammers, and mushrooms and xenias for unliving unmoving fake plastic coral.

    I'm running the same setup as you. I use 2 Fluval FX6 canister filters. I got rid of my sump and plumbed the underneath to the overflow. Couldn't be happier. I also clean them and replace the foam filter pads every few months...they aren't that dirty either. I also top off the water manually in the overflows. It's a great easy fun setup...really makes it easier and more fun. Personally, I think dirty sumps are more nitrate factories than a canister filter. I'm coming up on the first year. No issues.

    There’s nothing wrong with canister filters. They absolutely work. Sumps are just easier to work with when doing maintenance. Most people don’t want to clean out a canister filter and that’s what gives them a bad name.

    • @KolkataMarineHobbyist
      @KolkataMarineHobbyist Před rokem +4

      Sumps are best
      U can fit refugium, protein skimmer, ato , ats , media reactor etc in sump which u can't fit in canister
      Sumps are not just easier to work , it gives more room and gives the tank a opportunity of less maintenance...

      @@KolkataMarineHobbyistI have done both, Sump is easier but you can be successful with HOBS canisters, AOIs and even just water movement It maybe easier with a sump but you can get a tanks on with the point is that a simple aquarium has succeeded. You can convert a cheap fresh water setup to saltwater and not have to buy all the “nice to haves” straight away. If you are going simple and budget a foam pre filter (and a couple of spares) and an in line algae reactor connected to the return of a canister and you are good to go. Granted anything else may need to be hob but that’s just a good excuse not to have it. Another pocket saver.

      Best way to use canister filter for saltwater reef tank is to have a smaller prefilter canister connected to the main filter, have all the sponges on the pre filter canister and all the media on the main larger canister, with that smaller pre filter canister you can easily take it out once every week or 2 to clean theb connect it back to the main filter like that you won't have to touch the main filter for a while longer

    I’d be interested to know what your No3 and Po4 sit around. I think your regular water changes are key and not sure if your canisters are working for (ammonia/nitrite reduction) or against (buildup of excess nutrients/nutrient sink) you. But your tank looks great.

  • @ZedRobson
    @ZedRobson Před 3 měsíci

    Canister tanks of course work (obv no freshwater steel spindled impeller). Like compact sumps in a way :) You obviously have a grip on your tank's biology cycle.
    Only issue for me was a really hot summer & no chiller (just room fans for 6 tanks). Thankfully Led lighting has developed well as the old halides were hot (too late for my reef at that time).
    Found this channel via the Stripey (rare here), loved mine, great fish & personality, good shoalers (did not try in my reef though). You must get plenty of clicking/tapping noises from all those tangs (mornings for me) oh & I would not put in a parrot fish (I found out after several months why they are called surgeon fish). Good luck, keep it up & yes... so lucky with the sea water access :)

    Beautiful aquarium. I have a 110 gallon with 2 canister filters on one end I have an FX6 and the other end a Fluval 407 and the 2 are probably overkill but my aquarium water is incredibly clear always. I too always heard the canisters would be a nitrate factory so in fear of that happening I used a smart plug to the power strip that powers the canisters and wave makers so during feeding they are all shut down allowing fish a better chance to eat. Once turned back on anything that settled on bottom is stirred up. As a result of this I feel that much less food is consumed by the filters and thus allowing me to only clean 2 maybe 3 times a year. Do you do this as well?

    Hi, I love your video's, I have some questions, I use a Tetra tec 800 canister filter. I just bought Sera Siporax ceramics 1000 ml. My tank is around 40+ Gallons. Do I have to use a certain amount of it ? I have soft corals and LPS corals. So I can use the ceramics , Aquaforest Active Carbon, Tetra biofoam, and the Tetra filter floss for it without the use of a protein skimmer ?, And how do you control the PO4 ?, I have to use Aquaforest Phosphate minus otherwise it rises to levels of 0.16 for instance. I use the Aquaforest Reef Salt and rock, not live rock, (I've also bought the AF starter pack where you've made a video off).After a year and a half it has the identical color of live rock, lots of coraline on it and a lot of little tube worms :-), The tank is running for about a year and half. I Use the Tunze 9004 DC protein skimmer but still my nitrate value's are high, and well, it's an internal skimmer, so I rather take it out offcourse to create a little more space :-) . I do a 10% water change every week, and if I also have to clean the canister filterfloss I don't mind, it isn't a very demanding job. Keep up the good work , greetings from the Netherlands.

    With water changes, one needs to ask themself, why am I doing a water change? If there's a reason: nutrient export, trace element import, water clarity, that's fair enough, but out of some schedule they read about, that would be the wrong reason.

    it depends on the coral if this works or not, the more complicated the corals are and the closer you have to get to an optimal ICP you will find that it doesn't work, but your system looks good and if you like it it is that the most important. Keep it up, I'm very interested in how it goes 👍

    • @jesseberg6183
      @jesseberg6183 Před 10 měsíci +2

      no it doesn't. all a canister filter is is a small sealed sump. when a tank is new your going to have ups and downs no matter what your running and stocking. and when a tank is more mature things are more stable no matter what your running and stocking. you want to rely on automation where as we run on labor and husbandry. but I do love those videos you guys make where the tank crashes because one or more pieces of your machinery failed from laziness and your fake surprised faces are stuffed in the camera. i wanted the most natural looking reef like you see when diving. the least mechanical things in my tank and I get near zero readings with my canister and grow everything.

    • @coralreefexplorer
      @coralreefexplorer Před 10 měsíci

      @@jesseberg6183 go in a store an buy an Acropora anthocercis put this in your tank and wait for RTN/STN im in this hobby for 35 years, i see thousands of tanks, I'm in many clubs and very active in the scene believe me it has nothing to do with automation or any fancy stuff that's a fact that every ICP tells you. canister filters are actually made for fresh water and such an aquarium tends to become stable while a saltwater tank always wants to break out of stability. I didn't write that I think it's a bad idea, on the contrary I'd like to see what's possible with it and what's not

  • @jesseberg6183
    @jesseberg6183 Před 10 měsíci

    canisters do work well, but you do have to learn how to properly use then. you do have to export the nutrients. they do need to be flushed regularly because its a closed loop. without physically removing the nutrients it has nowhere to go and just builds up. and something i feel was important and left out is that soft corals like dirty water, and if you want other types of more sensitive corals you have to keep the nutrients lower. you have to up your canister filter knowledge which means pre filter, or heavier water changes. chemical media and so on.
