  • Two hundred years after the first discovery of the Tyranids, a second major Hive Fleet hit the Imperium. But Hive Fleet Kraken was a lot harder to defeat than Behemoth had been, because its roots were spread ahead of it by cults lurking in the darkness across the Eastern Fringe.

      Per the 8th edition Blood Angels codex, the Lamenters were out of contact for many years, but not "lost", as they are said to have prevailed (8th edition Blood Angels codex). Plus as of the most recent lore, their numbers have been reinforced by Primaris marines. Also, during the time they were fighting Kraken, there was one ornery Lamenter dreadnaught that was with the Deathguard.

    There's a fun bit in one of the Ciaphas Cain novels, where it's mentioned that the connection between Tyranids and Genestealers had been suggested quite early on by certain members of the Ordo Xenos. This suggestion was dismissed by higher ranked officials. Officials that were ultimately proven wrong. Amberely Vail's annotation is essentially "A more petty person would say 'I told you so'"

    Given the short stories of Inquisitor Kryptman way back in White Dwarfs 130 and 131 7in Summer 1990 that hearlded the release of ADVANCED SPACE CRUSADE! which introduced Hive Fleet Kraken and Tyranids as they pretty much are now with Tyranid Warriors, Carnifexes and Genestealers.
    Versus mostly just proto-Termagants and Zoats in the 1E Rogue Trader Rulebook which described Ultramarines vs Hive Fleet Behemoth back in 1987.
    I could make the dubious claim that Kraken arriving was the first narrative progressing event in 40K.

    The tyranids are the most interesting and terrifying faction in 40k, imo. When I started to play the game, I forwent them for my gaming buddy, followed by a decade of narrative scenarios and cinematic moments, that I still remember fondly. Genestealers rampaging through my Raven Guard‘s backlines, stopped by a heroic and fatal intervention by their captain. Venerable dreadnoughts being torn limb from limb while their living brothers were swarmed by gaunts, all becoming biomass at the end.
    I rarely won against them, but every game lost also included so many cool moments, that grew my affection for the Tyranids.
    Necrons used to be almost as terrifying in 4th edition. With their revamp they turned into a kingdom straight out of some cheesy medieval sitcom.

    • @mrmaster9801
      @mrmaster9801 Před rokem

      I like Tyranids precisely for the sheer terror they evoke, so I tried more than once to run them as my second army (my first one being the Ultramarines), only giving up when I realized the logistical nightmare they are (to me at least), expecially when fielding and removing them from the field ^^".
      I was planning to replace them with Necrons (my second favorite secondary army), expecially after putting my hands on the old 3e Codex and its beautiful lore. However, when I read about how they changed the Necrons' lore, I gave up on them too. I get that probably they were filling the same niche of the Nids back in the days (cosmic horror looming on the galaxy), but today they look pretty much Khemri in space and with even more bickering among the dinasties, which is a shame to me.
      So, I'm left with the choice between an army that I love but which I can't handle well from a logistical point of view and another one far more manageable but for which I still have to find something really good in its lore.

    • @paulyg405

      they don't use the warp, they travel slower than light speed. so your question is a good one, if the distances between galaxies are approx 2.5 million light years (between milky way and Andromeda as an example) they would need to consume their own biomass or go into stasis or something. And it also makes you wonder how they could have seen the Pharos beacon or the Astronomicon from those distances. There's a great old short story called 'Hive Fleet Horror' that digs into some of the tyranid questions. Now with all that nerding out of the way, the TLDR is that none of it makes any sense :P

    Tyranid is only named after a planet in universe, in reality some creator liked the portmanteau of Tyrant and nid, a common word ending with n taxonomy, especially bees. So just as one might say tyrannical with a softer I sound, one might say it with a harder I sound. The in-universe name is clearly a retroformation to make it work.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  Před rokem +2

      Yeah, this is what I think. The original (as far as I remember) was as you say Tyrant. But of course, that was in the days before audiobooks and youtube, so nobody actually knew. And at some point the trend became 'tirranid', EVEN THOUGH they're led by, say, Hive Tyrants.

    • @MagralhoPT
      @MagralhoPT Před rokem +2

      @@ArbitorIan hive TYRANT has nothing to do with tyranids, the same way you have hive guards, tyrant guards and tyranid primes, they are all named after their behavior within the swarm, and the old concept that the leaders (hive tyrants) act their will upon mindless swarms, like a tyrant imposing its will upon those below.
      This stems from the old lore vision of the tyranids, the same way necrons, that have not been fully fleshed out into the modern times.
      Back in the day, the spotlight only shinned on the imperium, space marines and their characters, orks, necrons, nids, they were all just cannon fodder to prop the imperium, pay no mind to those xenos.

    Jerry was a different kind of Hive Fleet..."special" was the least offensive term.
    Yes, they were the "special needs" fleet- they clumsily swarmed into each system, making everyone feel bad about killing them. Some chapter of Ultramarine even tried to show them how to rip and tear at the defenses, but it was all a big mess, really.
    In the end, the Imperium seeded three small systems to Hive Fleet Jerry and told them that they'd routed the Emperor's forces, gave the Swarmlord a blue ribbon and a hug and departed the planet.
