One thing that I think helps is doing the first splatter off the project. That lets some of the gloopier big drops get off the brush first, then go over your actual project. Every time you refill your brush do another small tap off, and that really helps me with the big blotches.

I've been crafting for many yeats with many mediums. Ive found the key is to let my perfectionist tendencies go. Splatter is by nature uneven and uncontrolled. Practice to get what you can live with. Then embrace the result and be happy. Don't beat yourself up ovet things you will never be able to control. And alwaus remember to have FUN!

For those with arthritis in their hands, try tapping the brush on the edge of a ruler or pencil. I've found that works well for me.

Krafters Cart in Auckland now stocks a few Gina K stamps and inks so I’ve started buying them from there. It’s a bit cheaper than buying from the US, what with the international shipping charges and the terrible exchange rate! Sometimes you have to wait for a while with KC though as items are often out of stock.

I have had troubles like Julie.... I do most of my splattering with watercolour pan paint and for me, wetter is better. I also find scraping the brush off a sharp angle works well for my flicks. I can never get your tapping technique to work. Funny really because it looks so easy. I also prefer a brush that holds enough water! Trial and error right! Splatter stamps are great when i dont want to risk any damages my piece!! Thanks Natasha!

A couple of the English ladies I watch here on CZcams do splatter with Posca pens. Make sure the nib is flowing well then tap on your finger or the side of another pen for a sharper tap and they do a lovely fine splatter - great for stars or snow. I haven't tried it yet as I don't have poscas but they do make it look so easy and effective!

I agree that you have to make sure you have to have enough water. Also for small Splatter do not hit the brush too hard. Practice on scratch paper to see if you are tapping to roughly. Light firm taps will minimize blobs.

Fun comparison, TY! Never thought to do the splatters first before ink blending…! I got so frustrated with my attempts that I bought a couple “splatter“ stamps!! But have not found the perfect way to get metallic splatters… so far no ink pads I have tried compare to lunar pastes or metallic watercolors for the shine….. Continuing to try for a successful way to add those to the stamps!! Letting go of perfection, not so easy! 🤪🙄🤣🤣

I never thought of putting splatter on first. That could be ideal if there is a chance the splatter just might ruin the card. And now I must dig out the spatter brush, toothbrush, fan brush, and stencil brush and experiment. I never splatter anymore because my splatter never does what I ask of it. My issue is consistency and getting the size 'I' want. 'Splatter should be random' I hear people say. Not mine, I say. It has to be randomly exact, it's my art anyways.. Splatter is great! Anyone can happily splatter. Getting the splatter you want, now that's the problem! Try saying splatter 5 times in a row very fast after reading this post without splattering 😅.

Thank you so much. That was helpful. What an awesome card! I also wonder why not water colors or dye type paints/colored pencils? That is my favorite for backgrounds and spatters. You can adjust the intensity, too. But, it sounds like she wants uniformity. Spray does sound better for that. I don't know if water colors would work for that. They might clog the sprayer.

Before I add splatters to a completed card, I try it on copy paper first. That way I see what I will get before ruining my card. Postcard pens provide the best splatter for me, but if I am really concerned, I have added them by hand. It is really time consuming less time than starting over.

I guess the nature of the technique is its unpredictability. If I want splatters, I have to live with the risk of blotches. My solution for the odd blotch or two is to strategically place focal points, sentiment strips or bling. Try that, it covers a multitude of sins without the need to bin the entire project 😊 Kind regards from Germany, Nicola

  • @sushanart

This was a nice experiment! ❤
What also effects the splatters are the height you hold the brush at and if you want opaque splatters or not. Some colours absorb other colours in a painting.
I have seen watercolourists flick the brush tip hairs very soft and gently against the painting for splatters and it gave very small, beautiful splatters.
Posca pens are good for splatters in your choice of colour, but can be a little unpredictable in where the splatters end up. Preferably they're hit with a brush, a pen or your hand.
Dr Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White is expensive (at least in my country 😳 ) but lasts a very long time. That is if you want white splatters.
Copic Opaque White is even more expensive 🫣, but is supposed to be good for splattering.
Dina Wakley's gloss sprays are good for splatterings with the spray tube itself (and brushes) if you don't mind the glossy effect.
If you want to use white acrylics Titanium White is opaque.
Both Ranger and Liquitex has special splatter brushes, and Liquitex has two different models - one flat and the other round.
    😇🩵🙏🙌
