How to Create An Art Journal From A Composition Notebook

- Hey all! I created a video on how to start and create an art journal from an inexpensive composition notebook. You can buy them at any dollar store or back to school supplies and use what you have at home from your stash! Art journaling, glue book or a daily planner! I will give you a small flip through of the few I have completed and new that I have started! It's a great way to get inspired using any of your already purchased items! I’m an artist (oil painter) & writer but I’ve started doing online classes, drawing, copperplate calligraphy, etc. Plus I’ve gotten into card making & scrapbooking. I figured this was my next little journey. I have a numerous amount of journals that I’ve received as gifts and wanted to use a couple as junk journals. @@ScrappinDeeDee I have MS & was put out of work in ‘99. Over the years I’ve found that learning & staying busy has not only helped me mentally but also physically. However humor has played the biggest effect over my mental outlook. I could actually do a standup act just about MS. Anyway, unlike most all I have is my creative path to fill my days. I’m still a licensed hairdresser and was starting paperwork to be a stage artist for hair shows so being creative is in me to the core. And with ppl like you I learn more & more♥️

I made a watercolor journal out of this kind of composition notebook. I glued three pages together for a more stable sheet then applied two thin layers of watercolor ground on both sides of the paper I glued together . Allow it to dry open for 24 hrs and it makes a great watercolor journal. I’m working on glueing watercolor paper in the same way to create another watercolor journal version.

I use washi tape to tape the outer edges of the 2 pages together. No wrinkles! I can also slide a piece of chipboard between the pages when I work. So fun!

That is one enormous journal !!! I have taken out about 10 pages from the center (20-ish total) to leave a little room because I usually have some kind of decoupage, paint layers, embellishments so I don’t want to take a chance on the spine going kaput. Lovely share. Thank you

@@ScrappinDeeDee thank you! I'm using old calenders, magazines, old post cards, tea bag tags, tickets, and other stuff I have around and try my hand at some art. I wasn't very good in school. But going to give it a try.

@@ScrappinDeeDee I am thank you again! I'm using a notebook and I decorated the front and back cover with Teddy Bear wrapping paper! I'm gluing the pages together like you said. I'm not done with the front cover yet. I was thinking about adding ribbon and lace and not sure what else yet.

Well thank you! 💕You are most welcome! I honestly don't know the brand - I think it's pretty generic. I purchased it at the dollar store. It held up great!😊I also created a coffee journal and a faith journal for some friends that I gave them to and used the same type of composition book from the dollar store. I created videos on them as well if you wish to see how they turned out with sturdiness. Thanks for watching! 💕

Hey there! Yes, I work from front to back - I think from working in it so much it lays flat when opened but when closed I didn't really use a lot of thick items. Mostly paper, paint, clippings, etc. That will help to keep it more flat when closed. Thank you for your lovely compliments! ❤ Hope you are doing well!💕Dee Dee

Is it better to glue pages together? And did you glue pages?
I find that it is better to glue them together because it gives the pages more stability or if I layer, collage or add a piece of paper onto the comp pages themselves. I personally like the thickness of them. Yes, I did glue pages together! Thanks for watching! 💕

For an art journal, couldn’t you start a page (after gluing the two sheets together) with a coat of gesso or white paint?
Hi Deborah! Sure you can! I have done this also and it works great! Try anything you want to use and see where it goes! It's a great non expensive way to experiment with mediums and paper! Thanks for watching!💕
It looks like you glue pages together as you work instead of “prepping the journal like I’ve seen crafters do. Do you just glue two pages together or more than that. I want to start a journal but have been stalling. Do you tear pages out too? I have seen a lot of people do that but it doesn’t look like you do. I love your work and will now become a subscriber. Hi there! Yes, I do glue two pages together but sometimes I do prep the pages singlely - it depends on what I'm going for. Some pages I will not prep and let the lines of the page show through if I watercolor or do a light wash with acrylics. No I never really tear the pages out. I like to make my journals thick so the more pages for me the better!
