    how is the Prinz Eugen not on this list? she was a German battlecruiser that survived the the entirety of ww2 and was given to the Americans. the Americans decided to use her for nuclear testing in operation crossroads. they nuked her twice, and she survived. they then towed her to kwajalein atoll, in which the ship that survived ww2 and two atomic bombings hit a bunch of rocks, capsized and sank. you can still see half the wreck out of the water.

      In the Java Sea English and Dutch war wrecks have disappeared off the seabed, and they even stolen the propellers from one of our cruisers! Why was a cofferdam needed for that wreck? (dry docks flood and then rise by the way) What was built there is a cofferdam. Maine was raised using that method just prior to WW1. - former shipbuilder.

    • @panzerelmer
      @panzerelmer Před 7 lety +20

      They were concerned about what kind of waste they could find inside the wreck. Some talked about radioactive materials.
      The location and weather there made the coffer dam the best solution. Though, during construction, a winter storm took down the NW wall off the dam. Got delayed many months.

    Kee Bird was destroyed by the APU breaking loose from her badly rusted mounts, which then flailed around in the tail, rupturing the fuel tanks which sprayed on the hot APU and caused the fire. It was a real tragedy considering that she was largely in perfect shape other than that after the engines and a few other minor things were replaced.

    The aircraft boneyards in Az serve another purpose you didn't mention kid; they're not just waiting , they're repairing. Aluminum gets microfractures over time in service and all aluminum planes must eventually take a break. In the dry air, bare aluminum will actually heal like skin. Those micro-fractures which could have caused a mid-air accident, exploding people out the hull, become as good as new after a few years in the sun as long as someone strips the paint beforehand.

    • @lalnablehector1285
      @lalnablehector1285 Před 6 lety

    • @jsaurman
      @jsaurman Před 6 lety +1

      There are old geezers who fix up WW2 planes and fly them in airshows.
      Obviously, when you are doing maintenance on a 70 or 80 year old plane, there isn't anyplace you can call for parts.
      You have to repair the part you have, or make an entirely new part just like it in a machine shop which is crazy expensive.
      The third option is to try to salvage the part from another aircraft just like it, which is probably what they were referring to.

    Saw the Russian ship lots of times in St.John's. It was bought to be refurbished but after a couple years tied up in St.John's it was infested with rats. The company who bought the ship also had financial problems, their tug was also seized becouse it was deemed unseaworthy by Canadian Standards. It was spotted off Ireland and was listing badly, and shortly after it eburd went off which means it probably sank.

    The F4U Corsair was the most feared fighter in the pacific. The two strangest facts about it are 1) Before WWII the Japanese purchased plans of the prototype F4U and decided it wasn't what they wanted. 2) The first Mig of Korea was shot down by a corsair. In my opinion the Corsair was the deadliest fighter in the Pacific theater (but the P-38 is better looking ;)).

      April 12th 1912 she sank....over 2000 deaths sank over 2 miles into the north atlantic ocean.....
      Split in two from bow to stirn...only 12 life boats........some were capsized......many perished.... Remains of the bow and strin are seperated by a mile.......stirn tore it self apart......the remains of the people still reast at the bottom.......iceburg hit her on the starboard side breaching 5 compartments......her sister olipos had a major bow damage.....and people still have there storys of the terrifying grousom sinking of the butifull, R.M.S Titanic.
