The FUTO Keyboard is excellent

- A brief first impression review of FUTO Keyboard (currently appears to only be available for Android), which promises not to collect your data or even need to connect to the internet for speech to text. A far cry from Microsoft Swiftkey now embedding Copilot!
So far, it's been excellent and seems to deliver on all of its promises.
Also, hey @rossmanngroup, let me pay you. LOL. None of the payments seem to work, either through the app or via the website.
I have no affiliation and have had no contact with FUTO, nor have I received or expect to receive any compensation or consideration for this video.

I figured out the issue with the web payment. The website error said it couldn't generate the payment request, but the issue was the email address I used. Apparently, their payment system didn't like my email alias (e.g. name+futokeyboard@email.com). Possibly it's just something where it doesn't allow non-alphanumeric characters or something, but doesn't generate an error on the email input field... it just breaks when they try to generate the payment.
Using a non-aliased email did work on their website, but the in-app system still doesn't work. Further, when I got the activation email, the button to activate the app didn't work. I checked in the app, but didn't see anywhere to put the key in... you click the "I already paid" button a couple of times and then it just says thanks for using the paid version.
At any rate, I was finally able to give them my $5. :-D
I had the exact same issue with their payment system when using Grayjay.
Thanks, you brought this bug to light for us, we're working on getting it fixed!
@@N00byEdge I hope you can fix it in mobile app so I can pay with all the google play credit I have! PS: PLEASE add a keyboard width option for phones with wider screens like folding phones? It would be great if the keys went all the way to the screen edges
They even made it difficult to pay them. One of the rare examples that opposes the dark patterns of the internet 😂😂

I wrote a single character wrong in "futo keyboard" and now I have a new research material about human biology to study.
I accidentally pressed an unknown key combination and "futo keyboard" generated the entire Akashic records. Sadly my PC only had about five terabytes of disk space but I got what I could.
Did you mistype one of the letters as "a"?
Me too...
haha...
I mistyped it as
"Auto keyboard", and what I got were basically autoclickers but for kb keys. Pretty cool!
@@lmnkthey did an "a" too, only at another position

Thank you for the kind words! All feedback will be taken into consideration... and we'll work out the issues with the payment system!
One request please, the back button, when long pressed could there be an option for that to delete the entire word, not just a character.
My summary after reading through the comments here: the biggest issue for a lot of people seems to be multilanguage support. Several have felt the swipe input is quite inaccurate. And multiple people missed the height/offset adjustment that's under all the themes; maybe that could be broken out into "layout" or something, just so it's more obvious. My opinion hasn't changed in the days I've been using it; it's great. I'd only add an option to auto-space after punctuation. Thank you!
iOS please
Any ios plans?
I met very few open source keyboards with Chinese(with proper implementation - none), can it be implemented here, please?
Also, could you add button (instead of emoji button) to fast switch languages? Awesome and nice to use keyboard, thanks Louis, finally found something that is comparable to gboard. With features mentioned above this keyboard would be the best choice ever.
bro you should toss lou's face on the thumbnail and make the big text caption "LET ME PAY YOU" lol

Doesn’t it allow you to pay for it already?
No, the donate button doesnt work in the latest release :/@@OctagonalSquare

Barely 30 seconds in and I've already got it installed! I was looking for a privacy focused keyboard for ages!
Yea right! Did the same
Is this a joke? How can a keyboard be not private? What do they have like keyloggers in there? It just sounds so bizarre
@@turolretar Not a joke, and you answered your own question. A lot of keyboards such as Gboard and Swiftkey collect data such what you type, how much you type, voice to text information, autocorrect predictions based on what you regularly type. Google for example does not divulge what it's used for (Though it's likely used to train AI). Even though I'm not doing anything illegal, I'd rather not have what I type sent to some server where they can do whatever they want with it.
Agreed! @@elektra81516
Just downloaded it. Saw the huge buttons. Immediately uninstalled the Google keyboard I was using till now. Finally. Amazing.
I don't even know why the algorithm recommended your video to me but this is exactly what I was looking for in the past. I just stopped searching for keyboard alternatives and settled for Swift Key a long time ago. I will now immediately try FUTO and am excited about the possibility of a always offline keyboard. Well made video, good info. Thanks!
I downloaded the FUTA keyboard and it looks weird.
That's a disgusting comment 🤢
That's the wrong keyboard. Could be very right for at least someone though.
@@Scott_Stone Hahaha that's true; I'd be happy with the FUTA kb hahaha
i downloaded it yesterday and it's surprising how good it is right away, I think it only "lacks" the ability to move the cursor by long-pressing of the spacebar but they also got the edit mode so it's not a big deal. I can't wait for the custom themes to be available
But it actually does move the cursor when pressing on the spacebar...
@@anderlopez6699 you're right!!! thank you so much. I was used to doing a long press and then moving but this is way quicker I never tried to just start moving, well it officially has everything I could ask for, except for shortcuts but that's even less important
You cannot adjust the size??? At least i could not find the Option ..
@@XA--pb9ni you can cofigure the height of the keyboard on the "Theme" section, hope that's what you're looking for
Holy shit.. I missed that cause i did not look @ the themes ..thx so much, deinstalling swiftkey right now
Just installed and typing this comment with FUTO now. Working great!
Currently other languages are kinda broken, symbols not working properly, app crashing, so I'll stick to Swiftkey and Gboard for the time being, but I'm very interested, as it works perfectly in English
I bougt it 3 times for all my devices. The voice input works amazingly well. Finally the alternative I was longing for so long 🤩
The fact than you can add local offline AI models oprimized for mobile just by importing file is amazing. Installed.
I was swiftkey user until microsoft forced copilot. Same about edge on mobile.
What was the difference between Swiftkey and Gboard? Also yeah it can really be that simple. Shows just how much we are getting fucked by corporations.
@imnotusingmyrealname4566 I never used gboard but the toolbox swiftkey provided was great until Copilot invaded the app.
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566SwiftKey uses a learned heat map matching your intended/autocorrected words to map your actual inputs with your intended inputs. Maybe your bumper case is stopping you from reaching Q and P super consistently or your finger wanders a bit too far to the right so you hit D instead of S. Over time, Q and P will grow in size until the far edges of W and O are actually Q and P, and the left side of D will register as an S. It fixes awkward grips, cases, or small/large screens' effect on your typing.
Gboard just has big time spyware informing autocorrect as to your intended next word.
well this is what I miss from swiftkey, it seems that I will stick with it for a little longer but as soon as the app is more mature and developed i will try again.
I'm using SwiftKey and loving it
Swipe typing entirely depends on you tapping the correct word when it guesses incorrectly to learn. After you do that for a bit, it's pretty much spot on every time.
That's really good info for how it works. Thanks!
I didn't know that! hopefully it will eventually be usable, even if it isn't now
actually it might never be usable since the correct word isn't even in the list more than half the time so far
@@agsbxnskqbwjakqif it's good, swipe typing is better with one hand and/or without looking
I've been pretty annoyed with the swipe typing so far. It messes up short words often and gives random acronyms instead. Google's swipe keyboard is so much better.
This is the AOSP keyboard fork that I was waiting for: fully offline, with support of Material You and pretty basic for the essential needs.
Actually, I'm using the LineageOS default keyboard that uses the Material You theme and I expect that FUTO keyboard get the recognition that deserves.
How does it compare to Openboard, also an AOSP foss privacy keyboard?
Openboard is old, last release was 2 years ago. Does it is even still developed? @@gn0s1s
I'm on graphene os and I've just lived without voice input to preserve my privacy. This has offline voice input so I'm back in business! Thanks for promoting this!
Using the Futo keyboard now and I LOVE it already in the 5 minutes that I've used it for. Thanks for telling me about this awesome thing.
After the video I saw who the keyboard was made by. Rossman has been slowly earning my trust the last few years, so I installed it and I'm trying it right now.
If I still like it by the end of the week, I'm gonna buy it.
The settings UI is a bit unpolished but so far this is amazing work and way better than Swiftkey. You even get a local ML model which handles suggestions and everything feels smooth and advanced. It's great.
Is Louis working on an privacy-oriented Android spin? I'd be down for that! The dude definitely has earned my (out) respect and trust over these many years.
Dude is not a developer. He's not even a good dude. He's a clock that tells the time right twice a day and both times it's about right to repair.
The rest of his opinions are awful and he tries to shove them down your throat with the right to repair stuff.
Just downloaded. We'll see if it ends up replacing Swift Key long-term. Thanks for making a video about it!
Yes it is. Is so amazing that I need this for my Desktop PC (for any Linux Distro) as a virtual keyboard and to use the voice input.
I'm enjoying it so far. Very intuitive to use and no issues yet. "Swiping" is the only word it has had trouble with so far for me
Amazing find, thank you for finding this, thank the algorithm for bringing you to my feed, new subscriber for you!
Just instealled it and used it. Instantly love it.
OMG I've been looking for SwiftKey replacement for a while now. Will try this one.
Downloaded it as soon as it was announced. Currently replying using it. I was also a user of swift. One time it was soooo good at predicting texts that I used to type just a few words and write the whole sentences but after few updates it deteriorated significantly and i learned it was recording everything I was typing (FOREVER!) which led me to an an open source option.
Just bought this. It's incredible
thank you for making this video SPECIFICALLY for me lmfao
i'm exactly in same situation as you, used swiftkey from early days and its been sad to see it go down in grasps of microsoft
i tried out FUTO and just the fact that you can manually maintain your models and dictionaries was already a hard hands down sell for me, lets see how it fares with time!
Regarding the payment not working for you: Aren't you offline?
Pretty sure the error message would have been different. I think it fails way before it even attempts anything since at the very least the Google play payment popup should show up. That's the place where the offline error should be.
I was offline for the demo in this video, but I had already tested everything prior to that. It doesn't work online or offline... same error message.
@@TechDregs just checked the payment page, it now works.
Excited to try it out. Listened to Louis talking about it too.
Thanks for showing it, I may wanna try it myself
just installed it, looks nice!
Wow! This keyboard looks absolutely incredible. I love it. ❤
What I want to know is
How do I use the json from Microsoft to make a dictionary that the futo keyboard can understand?
Someone help me please.
Cool! Will try it out. Watching from the Philippines.
THanks a lot, had few happy months with HeliBoard and this comes at the right moment, wish I could add voice for Spanish, this might be my new main keyboard so I´ll give it a try
currently I'm waiting on a way to migrate my clipboard and personal dictionary over from gboard, because I cannot be bothered to move all of that over manually
Is there any reason to switch to this if I've already got GBoard behind a firewall?
Does it have a way to make it bilingual bc I usually have SwiftKey on the Swedish keyboard but I write I'm both English and Swedish without changing the keyboard, is it possible?
Main reason I use Swift is because it detects which language I am currently using, and I don't have to change it in the settings, do you think this is possible in Futo??
It seems that FUTO keyboard haves the same handicap than AOSP keyboard and/or GBoard, which is tied to the preset language (in the case of AOSP keyboard and/or GBoard, is usually the default localization of the OS). The main advantage is the avariability of the offline dictionary of words that holds in their one hundred megs.
As an AOSP enjoyer, I see as a close alternative to the AOSP keyboard that haves the enhancements for Material You themes for a smoother experience from Android 12 and beyond (LineageOS enabled the Material You theme in the AOSP keyboard).
They have multilingual input models available! Pretty limited support for the time being but they're working on expanding it.
Yes you can just add a second language and the autosuggestions and autocorrect will switch automatically to the language you're typing in , like gboard
I tried typing a phrase in Spanish and it started giving me suggestions in Spanish
1:40 and then there are psychos like me who use florisboard. it has no:
- autocorrect
- text predictions
- emoji serch
- stickers
- pretty much nothing fancy, it's like a computer keyboard in that sense
what it DOES have however is what keeps me on it and i dont intend to switch to anything else; it's got an insane level of customisation over how it functions:
- select all, copy, cut, cursor nudge left/right, paste, clear clipboard, clipboard button shortcuts
- lets you change a lot of stuff down to a milisecond or a pixel
- heigh offset for when i feel like using gestures instead of 3 button nav bar, that way i keep all the keys at the same height and retain all my muscle memory for typing fast (around 85wpm)
- gesture shortcuts that work more precisely than other keyboards; moving the cursor while holding space can jump to characters, whole words, you can change the sensitivity on that (i find gboard to be annoyingly unresponsive), then theres swipe to delete which can delete whole words, letters, characters, whatever, change sensitivity of both of those down to how fast you swipe... (also annoyingly unresponsive on gboard)
- i somehow forgot to mention undo and redo buttons in the smart bar how silly of me
- ofc theres a backup and restore for settings, else it would be hell to set it up every time lol
I'm using Swifkey myself, though have FUTO as my replacment for voice dictation. Love that combo!
i would use it but you missed me at "no spellcheck"
Lmao same. I've gotten so much accustomed to the absence of the most basic of features that I now don't need them. Florisboard and FUTO Keyboard FWT
1. SwiftKey and FUTO have almost everything there, including personal tuning, except I think only FUTO has undo/redo, and don't think they do full customization for backswipe.
2. You clearly need autocorrect and spellchecker.
* I
* sense
* random lack of capitalisation
And not that autocorrect on SwiftKey would help you, but you spelled the wrong it's/its every time
I also use Florisboard it works great besides the rare crashes. The only thing that's missing from Gboard is the emoji search... if FUTO keyboard could do that (which is in their roadmap), then I'm sold
Omg I was using one called OpenBoard for years for this same reason but the maintainer abandoned it and the new one is struggling to handle the issues last I looked. So, I'm definitely trying this one!
Can you import your SwiftKey words (from the add to dictionary feature) to FUTO Keyboard?
I've got years of manually added words that I'd rather not have to do again.
My guess is, of is brought out of alpha and beta into an official version, the payment part will also work.
I'm using it now.
I'm typing on Google Keyboard but thank the CZcams Algorithm for recommending me this video. Instantly sold on this FUTO keyboard!
I'm still using HeliBoard because it has more customizability. On Futo I can't customize the layout to what I'm used to and I don't want to re-learn the exact button positions.
I notice on the keyboard my phone came with that it keeps autocorrecting to misspelled words even. Or just sees my button inputs wrong.
Might try this
Hows the swipe tying compare to GBoard?
Just what I needed
Any word on if this will ever come to iPhone? I’ve been watching Louis for years and would like to support this product.
Yep im really liking this. Already installed it. Though im noticing if you type too fast it cant quite keep up. Doesnt register all the touch inputs.
Small correction. It only does that if you leave popup on touch on. Seems like you have to wait until the popup disappears, else it won't register.
Downloaded. 😁
does it have it's own separate clipboard?
i installed it and will be using it for a while, but i couldn't find a resize option. i don't like my keyboards taking half of the screen, i need to scale it down [edit] nevermind, found it scrolling below all the themes
How is the typing experience compared to gboard? Also how is the voice type compared to gboard?
Swipe typing on Futo is abysmal compared to gboard, if that's your primary way of typing.
does it have language support for other languages like Cebuano, Tagalog, Japanese, etc? otherwise, I'll stick to SwiftKey for this
Using it, but would still like a keyboard that is suited to those of us with bigger hands/fatter fingers. FUTO does not appear to have height expansion settings?
Look in the theme options, at the bottom under all the different themes. I think they should move those options somewhere else, as multiple people have missed them. But yes, you can increase the height and offset the keyboard off the bottom there.
@@TechDregs Thank you very much, assumed it had to be somewhere, the current location seems a little random. Very happy with the keyboard so far, thank you for letting me know about it!
honestly the backspace swiping is pretty neat, more keyboards should have it
This is absolutely great.
I was trying open source keyboards to get away from gboard, but it was awful the autocorrect was a pain and the key clicks keep acting up, so I ended up switching back to gboard
for me the only issue with switching to a different keyboard is getting used to typing on it, but I like this so I'll use it untill I can type really fast again.
Perfect keyboard I'm using it right now
Long press to delete by word and smaller font size are the only options I want that are missing
Seems pretty decent to me. Guess I can try it for a while.
But I really would like to be able to activate multiple languages at once in one keyboard layout, because I'm constantly switching between mostly two sometimes three languages. I feel like having to switch the language manually each time I switch languages every five minutes will be quite a bit of an inconvenience.
Of course if that does already exist and I'm just too stupid to find it, please let me know.
Thanks man this is great
Tried it, unfortunately I had to switch back since it has no "flick" layout that you usually find on japanese keyboard, really hoping that this one would have it, all FOSS keyboard I've tried so far missing that feature causing me to be stuck with Google Keyboard...
should email them to add it. :)
Samsung Keyboard with good lock additions is the best keyboard out there. Has some awesome features that integrate with the OS like no other. But i will probably get angry comments to this, oh well. But I really like the idea of a fully offline keyboard.
Got it since 2 days. All good so far 😀
Can't switch yet. Typing exclusively by swiping and without mini floating keyboard it's just too cumbersome to reach
Well, I also finally installed it. Really nice.
thanks, very useful
I can't import the multilingual model for it, the import just does nothing. FUTO Voice input, a separate app, already comes with this model, and it works great, but FUTO keyboard doesn't want to use it for some reason.
Using it since its announcement. It still needs to improve multilingual support (automatic recognition and switching) and a few small aesthetic tweaks, but overall it's solid.
Will this keyboard let me type ğ, ş, č, ø, þ, and ű characters without having to manually switch languages every time?
I also stopped using Microsoft Swiftkey the moment they started suggesting stuff based on my input and clipboard. I mean, why do I need to Bing whatever that is that I'm typing?
Are they planning for iOS as well?
How does one reduce its size? Its the only thing holding me back.
Nvm, found it
Instantly uninstalled MS Swiftkey after installing Futo and trying it for 2 minutes. Really good.
One thing i hate with the default keyboard I have, is that if I want word suggestions, I have to turn on that it replaces the words I type with the "correct" one.
With the FUTO one, you can disable the auto-correct but still keep the suggestions.
That's more than enough for me to immediately switch over :)
Thanks, the only thing I was missing from my phone's stock samsung kb was the symbols on keys - your video showed me where the setting is. I already preferred FUTO and now I'm not compromising on anything.
(if anyone needs to know, it's in themes, scroll all the way to the bottom, as seen here 5:47. Weird place for it imo, it should be in typing prefs)
when release for iOS?
I can confirm it works on my one plus open while folded open!
it seems alright, but the swipe typing is probably the worst I've ever used. I'm stuck with gboard until I can find something that Swipe types even half as good. even as I type this with futo now, it is unable to even swipe type out the words "swipe type"
I tried it and the swipe typing is subpar, custom themes are shown to be there but it then tells you it's not a feature yet, and it doesn't have a spellchecker like Gboard does. So unfortunately I'm sticking with Google's crap with locked down permissions for now.
The real question is will it still be supported in a year or more? If so then this promises to be a fantastic option!
seems like a cool keyboard, I didn't notice any issues myself when using it however I noticed there aren't any options for Japanese, Mandarin or Korean. I hope they add these languages soon though I understand the wait seeing as hey require an IME to function properly
personally I find the swipe just doesn't work anywhere near as well as gboard. Speech to text is an acceptable replacement if I'm alone in a quite space, but there are still many situations I find myself switching back to gboard for this reason. That being said on the website swipe typing is listed as alpha, so I'm hopeful that this will improve over time.
I agree with the sentiment and I have been annoyed with MS as well but what about stickers and gifs. Those have become a big part of how we communicate these days and I don't see how it could work without connecting to the internet.
I'm not sure about stickers, as I don't use them, but my texting app itself provides gif access (Textra). I agree though, gif support does necessitate internet. As does messaging itself. The difference I see is that it's not the keyboard doing it. If all you need to do is type (like taking notes or captioning a photo), there's no need for your keyboard to capture data and send metrics to someone.
Really hope they add japanese and korean soon, would love to switch to it
This is awesome
idk, i'm still playing with it but i've had to blacklist about 100 different acronyms but had to add "lol"
and it still doesn't work as well to type. i tried typing "well" today about 10 times and it never actually suggested it but did suggest "we'll" which rather infuriated me!
as of now it is definitely a "price you pay for degoogle"
It's awesome! The only things I wish it had were the option for arrow keys and an intext translator into another language.
I install within minute I came across his video and it was amazing, the gboard was hanging much .
futo is great, however, swipe typing isn't there yet. as soon as that's improved, i can daily drive it :)
Futo is great for an alpha release. It has most things I need, but some issues that make it difficult to stick to.
In hoping that as I use it, the learning improves the accuracy, and then they just need to fix the horizontal layout
Keyboard which is 109 MB
Thats a lot.
How much RAM resources it takes on my phone ?
Not much if you're not using it. The install size on my phone is 148MB plus user data and a little cache. Nothing shows in my RAM usage for it, but the biggest impact would probably be while using voice input... I haven't noticed anything to suggest it has any significant impact on performance with the default voice model.
I was using Yandex but I'm giving futo a try typing this comment. It seems a little sluggish but still very usable. Thanks for the recommendation
installed it when it was announced, but have uninstalled it since. it doesnt look that good on a tablet. its missing a few buttons i want and instead has just too much empty space
I have been using it for couple of days I love this keyboard. It is peach of mind knowing that my keyboard is not connected to internet and it was not made by tech billionaires.
