- This award-winning documentary charts the extraordinary and inspirational story of mysterious 1970s musician Rodriguez. In UK cinemas Thursday July 26th
In the late '60s, a musician was discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Despite overwhelming critical acclaim, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumours of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon.
SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN follows two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. This is a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.

I'm South African and I had never heard this guys name until last week when I watched "Searching for Sugarman" The weird thing was that I knew all the songs, I then discovered that my parents played his music all the way through my childhood, to my surprise. Rodriguez has been in the dark for way too long, I'm glad his music is finally being recognized for every cent it's worth!
Amazing you never knew his name. You must be younger than me I guess. Everyone I knew back then, had Cold Fact on vinyl. Amazing. Mind you, you knew the music and that def says a lot.
I just read your message now after 10 years; same experience in my life...
I knew his name. My Mom played him aswell in my childhood...as a teenager in the 90s i listen to him aswell. When the Documentary released i was blown away because I live and was born in Switzerland. The only connection is my South African Mom.
This movie changed me and changed my life because it introduced the music and story of Rodriquez into my world. One of the best documentaries ever made.
You should watch Punk Syndrome & Punk Voyage docummentaries! Just as good & warmhearted but sadder as Finding Sugar Man. czcams.com/video/j8a9aYOn8nw/video.html & czcams.com/video/RuyHJyGiY4Q/video.html
Agree so much it's amazing.
I was living in Rhodesia / South Africa in the 1970's and can confirm that it is absolutely true; literally everyone had a bootleg cassette copy of the Cold Fact album - me included. For a long time nobody had the record though, and we knew nothing about Rodriguez, but everybody knew the songs. Still such a great album.
So glad he got to know the impact he had while still alive. Rest in peace.
RIP Sixto Rodriguez (July 10, 1942 - August 8, 2023), aged 81
And
RIP Malik Bendjelloul (September 14, 1977 - May 13, 2014), aged 36
You both will be remembered as legends.
😢
The thing with Rodriguez is you hear it once and it sticks. You never tire of his songs. They speak to you and relax you and they tell you the truth. He is the real deal; the true artist; the poet and he has found his true place in music history as one of the greats.
Right? Truly unforgivable.❤
It's one of those movies that leaves an impact, and you know it before it begins.

Randomly saw this on a flight from DC to Doha, Qatar and it quickly became what is probably my favorite documentary of all-time. I now have all of his music and try to spread his albums to those who don’t know him. Such a brilliant, brilliant artist. Thank you, Sixto!
Sadly he is no more
@@X3eRo0 yup, so sad. Didn’t realize he passed until seeing this and visiting his Wiki page. What a life, though!
It happened to me as well! I saw it on the plane! And It is the most astonishing documentary!
@@coleccionandovoy that’s awesome that you caught it on a plane. One of my best flights ever.
I saw this movie five days ago and my head is still spinning. It is astounding, as good as - and very different from - the best music films I have ever seen. Scorsese's Harrison movie, Stones in Exile, the Petty doc, they were all outstanding, but I knew most of the story and pretty much all of the music going in. Mystery is usually not an element in rock cinema, but I knew nothing - had never heard of - Rodriguez, his music, the story or where it might go, And I really loved it.
I finally got to watch "Searching for Sugar Man"
Absolutely essential. An amazing story with much to teach us.
Teach us what?
This trailer is so true to it's word. The documentary was so riviting and good. It has a very sad but feel good quality to it. And most of all the music is FANTASTIC. It's one of those special kind of documentaries that comes around once in a long time. It's one that you'll want to see over again; share with friends, and become an instant fan of his.
I heard on the news that he died a week ago but I never heard of him before. I'm American so that explains it. As I was watching the documentary just last night, I kept thinking, "Are they being serious? Is this a farce or a movie like 'Eddie & the Cruisers', which is about a (fictional) talented musician who may or may not have died young in a bad accident?". Rodriguez's songs hooked me right away so I checked Wikipedia, and holy cow! THIS IS A TRUE STORY!!! Amazing musician named Rodriguez records 2 albums worth of great songs in 1970ish, sells maybe 6 copies total in America and works construction for 40 years, losing a finger in the process, blissfully unaware that meanwhile on the other side of the world in South Africa (and Australia which the documentary doesn't mention for some odd reason) he has a huge following and his 2 albums sell millions of copies, yet he never knew all that time. Then a phone call 40 years later changes everything, AND the best part is he took the record company to court and got a settlement for unpaid royalties and toured successfully in Europe, Africa, and the United States in the last 10 years. Wow. Just wow. Also, I ordered those 2 albums on Amazon, can't wait to turn up the stereo and sing along, "I wonder..."
Feel blessed to have seen Rodriguez live tonight. 72 years young.
Grew up listening to Rodriguez, feel honoured to have been influenced by his amazing work from such a young age. He is so cool!
I rarely reply anymore on You~ these days, but I feel compelled to. I saw this movie today knowing nothing about the subject material or the man himself; after leaving the theatre into a dimming sunset I texted my friend "I have a new hero."
That is probably the greatest praise I have ever gave a film.
Soulful, touching, heartrending and uplifting, this film------ you cannot write this, it is a story of true brilliance and daunting inspiration.
I cried throughout the picture. A must-see.
"Searching For Sugar Man" is a phenomenal movie about an artist who is brought from extinction & finally gets the recognition for his brilliant poetic lyrics. This movie is so emotionally inspiring and uplifting. That if you don't cry by the end for this underdog tale. Then your just as cold as ice, lol. I highly recommend this historically interesting film for everyone to see. A+ and I'm buying this movie on blu-ray too!
Just watched the film...amazing. In Ireland, we've never heard of him. What a great talent, and story.
I have one of the "six" original LP vinyls of Coming From Reality. I lived near the factory that printed the album covers and they were selling the surplus they got stuck with for a quarter each. I had no idea who he was, but I played the hell out of it. The cover is still in okay condition; but, I scratched it up quite bad. Now I'm kicking myself.
Don’t know if you can still see this, but it’s aboard amazing that you were one of the people who bought his record! Thank you!
Rest in Peace Malik, you'll be missed :(
This is one of my favorite documentaries of all time, I don't know why but I just feel an instant emotional attachment
100%
The old Irish barber who cuts my hair was playing one of his songs, I'd knew I'd heard it and I asked who it was, he told me to watch this, it was my Da back home in Ireland who used to play his records, I was stunned to find out about his life, Northern Ireland was a struggle, still is, maybe that's why his music resonates with the oppressed so much, a true inspiration.
Wow, I am so glad I didn't watch the trailer before I watched the movie. It gave away the whole story, the escalation and intrigue is one thing that really makes this movie memorable and beautiful.
R.I.P. Malik :/
Best documentary I’ve ever seen, and this is the ONLY trailer that should be watched by anyone who hasn’t seen it. The US trailer completely gives away the best part of the film - those who have seen it know exactly what I’m talking about.
RIP SIXTO RODRIGUEZ
THE KING OF ROUGH DIAMONDS
❤❤❤
We in North America were fed media crap during the changing of the guard in SA. Just go to a reference library and read what was recorded about SA in the early 70's
Rodriquez is rare man who has remained true to himself and others.
Let music be your guiding light in life. I found this doc to be deeply moving and spiritual. Two thumbs.
REST IN PEACE
Sixto Rodriguez
Awe inspiring singer songwriter.
jan 1 2013 .ty the two who went looking.. ty south africa for keeping his music alive ..truely one of the greatest today in the industry.. and he has arrived back but without the movie i would have missed this awesome talent..i am totally blown away..i am in love with his talent...keep on sixto rodriquez making the sound and ty all
RIP Sixto Rodriguez. Please pour some sugar in heavens! Your story is now known worldwide. ❤🙏🏻🎸🎤🇿🇦
Saw the film yesterday. It made my night.
Rodriguez has been famous for long time at SA, Now we are fortunate to know his music
"i think of you" from his 2nd album was a radio staple (or might have even been a hit 45 rpm single) in manila, philippines in the early 1970s...susan cowsill's cover single was a radio hit in 1977...childhood nostalgia for me...
Friends of mine went to see him at the Perth Concert Hall here in Australia in 1981. Half the audience walked out because he was so affected by heroin that he kept nodding off mid song and forgetting what he was playing. It's good to know that he conquered his addiction. I always loved his stuff ever since I first heard around 1980 - one wonders if the drugs inspired the music and/or would he have gone further if he was drug free? A little from column A and a little from column B, I'd guess.
Great movie. I had a big smile on my face when things finally happen.
So looking forward to seeing this. Saw him at the Armchair. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a week. Legend, kept me from going insane in that fuckin army.
Wow...just wow. What a story, and what an artist
Just love the music! Listened to it as a teenager in South Africa many years ago and still love his songs. Great talented guy that actually never knew how an amazing voice he has. Really a bit sad but hope he is famous in America now… because he is very famous in South Africa for at least the last 30 years.
Forever proud of Sixto Rodriguez and his mexican roots, Mexican Proud
I watched it I'm in nor cal was so proud of sixto Rodriguez watching that movie and he was Mexican American trip me out 🇲🇽👍🙏
Miracles are possible!!!
Very special talented singer/songwriter & his humility is so beautiful, he’s shown me so much in just one documentary than all my years of formal education
Oh man...I love the way you put that...and...I could not agree more!!!!! Viva Rodriguez, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is the real deal!!!!! Seeing/hearing/listening to him will change your life...
Amazing. The only film ever that has bought tears to my eyes.
Best music documentary I've ever seen. Such a great story.
Growing up with music bars all over Marabastad Pretoria. These were songs we would hear often played outside shops. Those were simple and yet beautiful days. Brilliant singer. He now needs the No 1 slot. WOW!! Life is full of surprises.
Thank you for posting "Searching for Sugar Man - Official UK Trailer."
Inspirational story. Rodriguez is such an underrated musical genius. i just recently found out about him (randomly streaming the Searching for Sugarman soundtrack on huffington post?) and im completely obsessed now!
I'm glad those that have never eard of Rodriguez comes out the movie deeply affected, many ask why this man was never so well known in the US and why the fame in South Africa never filtered bac to him for at least 25 years, ....some of this was due to economic and cultural sanctions that limited the flow of information in either direction and of course, the South African government at the time, banned as much as they could as they viewed his lyrics anti establishment and revolutionary.
He toured Australia in 1979, if the Sth African documentary had followed the Australian paper trail, it be easier to be able find him. See Rodriguez lp record of the concert of that year on youtube :)
Sixto rip - got to see him twice in 2015 😢
Wow. Where have I been? I'm a huge Rodriguez fan,and my daughter had to tell me about this doco. She said it was the best doco she had watched
She grew up listening to him and is a fan also. I'm going to have to roll a joint, and watch it tommorow night. I can't wait
He is the greatest of all time, Rodriguez ❤❤ It's important that we bring stories like Rodriguez into the picture a good stories something valuable what an artist Rodriguez "Sugarman" thanks to Sugarman's ❤🎸
A Swedish documentary at its best.

Saw it tonight! Its magic - real life magic! Wonderful!!!
Wow I found Rodriguez by accident about a year ago, had no idea he was such a mysterious artist, RIP
Met him lastnight I picked him and Paulo nutini in my taxi best day ever
Amazing! this sort of reminds me of how Ma Dukes was reunited with Dilla's record collection. Different stories but yeah it reminds me of the record story. Anyway, I loved this documentary so much, and I'm now a huge fan of his.
best scripts/stories comes from Life..a beautiful docudrama!
This documentary was fantastic!
To get a sense of how deep the music was ingrained in SA society, you notice the crowd at the concert in SA were much younger than us,. These are 2nd and 3rd generation still appreciating the music.
Wonderful human being, SIXTO RODIGUEZ, excellent searchers for him, jewel documentary.
Wow.Never knew that I know his music. Brings back childhood memories.
Rodriguez - Mexican American, Intergalactic Poet.
This man has so much to spare that he exhales integrity people.
He never had to become a star because he is already interstellar.
Unfortunately many of today's so called 'artists' seem to have a real lack of talent! However for some reason this doesn't seem to be an issue from them, the record companies or even the public. I saw The Sugar Man in London Shepherds Bush, what an artist!
Best documentary I ever wached
Thx for telling the whole story in the trailer.
Amazing documentary. Such a talented and humble guy.
I totally love this guy... we grew up with him!!
Excellent film! I highly recommend it!
brilliant film/story/man
Unbelievably wonderful movie. Just see it.
I found the soundtrack to this album streaming on Huffington Post! It sounds good! I want to see this movie
Very sad news, Malik Bendjelloul, Director of this film found dead at 36 in Stockholm. Condolences!
im happy that i went to cinema to watch it with my son.
It's not my hypothesizing, it's the opinion of the experts involved and the historical track record of the US pop charts. His music was proven to be hit music as it was massively successful in other countries.
Cold Fact one of the greatest classics
South Africa knows Music. This week I bought the movie & sound track.
its the best year ever! the stone roses, and now this.
the fact that this movie won the best documentary over "the invisible war" say something saddening about oscar.
Sounds like an interesting muso. Cannot wait for this film to come out. :)
Around the time of Netscape and Geocities sites in the mid 90s, I actually remember seeing these posts on message forums requestion any information on the singer Rodriguez.
this was a pretty special documentary.
I met Rodriguez in one of the bars in that hard end of Detroit about the time he had been let go by the record company
prove it
Show him how
You really need to do something about that cockbreath ToneGarvey.
well done guys!!! well done!!!
Now we just need a searching for the hot blonde in the front row of the Rodriguez documentary :)
Memories of singing Sugar Man in the pub at university !!!
So very well said Kashmiran100...and every word of it is true!!
my Spotify alorythym threw this guy up this morning and I'm thinking this is good, who is he, so a quick Google search tells me I know nothing about him but all his songs I do know, heard them all at one time or another and like them all, god I wish he was 20 and I was 20 now today and we starting off again,
That’s amazing! Just found out about him but I wanna learn more. SA make him sound ethereal almost
The legend is alive
