I do this in all my mixes. I even record mixes in my apartment in the middle of the night. Mixing in headphones bothers nobody, which is a plus. Of course, syncing the audio to the video in my software afterward (I do live mixes on my channel) is a bit of a pain, but it works out in the end.

I had to do the 4th way many many years ago... maybe a decade ago on Traktor if I recall. haha This was a fun video. I'm mentoring 20 middle schoolers on how to DJ, and I wanted to see if there were any. other techniques I could impart with them. This was a good validation, even though I am blessed with space where I can use subs/speakers for my online events, radio show, and educational purposes.
Thanks for all you do for all these years! I've been djing for 17 and I feel like you have been around for a looooong time, too. :-)

I'm surprised not many know it today as it was standard back in the days for most DJ's??? but in a club not as much as i needed to hear the MC & Crowd more to get in the vibe !! but learning the headphone mixing technique will improve your mixing quite bit i still mix today in the evening that way now, but watch your ears ( Low volume) don't over do it over time 🔊 👍🎧.

So I'm wondering do any of you guys use a setup like this? What's the solution?

I've been using headphones and earphones to dj for years. I use virtual djs preset sound configurations to make my headphones my speakers and use them as headphones at the same time so I did a keyboard mapping (laptop DJing) that reduces the master volume aka speaker or it turns it off and switches to my cue deck for headphones and bam like that it's been easy

A couple of things to note. Pioneer mixers (and some Denons) you need to have the master queue button engaged or this won't work.
Allen & Heath mixers, the master volume dips in the headphones when you activate the queue. Stay away from these mixers if that's your style of dj'ing. (The dB versions may not have this issue as they're digital).

There is a “6th way” for Traktor users (and maybe other softwares too):
    1. Go to the Output Routing settings in Traktor
    2. There you can route the Master Output, the Monitor Output, and here’s the key: the RECORD Output.
    3. Like this, you route the Master’s output as usual, but then you route the Record Output (which, in effect, is the same as the Master’s output) to the Left (or Right) of your monitor output (headphones), and the Monitor Output (in Mono) to the other monitor output. Not sure if I explainned it clearly enough, but hopefully this will help lther Traktor users (or other software users, if they have this settings too)

    • @PK_Mega_Awesome

@@digitaldjtips thanks for getting back to me. What I mean is, you said that the sb3 doesn't have a cue/master mix knob, so with that in mind which method should I use to try and mix in my headphones?
I am currently looking into which controller to buy, am used to cdjs and mixing the old fashioned way listening to the room, but I'm now going to start djing on twitch and need to keep the noise down. I thought I'd settled on my choice with the sb3, I've used serato before and it seems to be the best choice, but now I'm wondering if I won't be able to mix in my headphones I might have to have a rethink.
      Thanks again.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  Před 3 lety

You can achieve the same thing with the SB3 it just doesn't have a rotary, instead it's a button that will let you have the master in your headphones as well (obviously this isn't as flexible as a mix knob as it's all or nothing).

  • @LKeet6

the one i haven't seen anyone mention is getting a headphone amp??
This way, you can have two sets of headphones, one to use in the normal way, for single channel cueing (or mixing master and cue as some like to do,) and one set of headphones being the "speakers," coming out of the headphone amp.
I'm not an expert, but this will work, no? They have RCA ins and sometimes XLR ins. (i'd like to go with this, and go for "balanced" sound output.)
I'm actually facing this issue right now, because i need to mix in silence. At the moment, i've used my very old sony power amp, but either the amp is too powerful for the headphones, or the headphone socket is crap, so the quality is bad with a lot of background hiss too. I've switched to using master cue on the mixer.
But long-term, i want to get a headphone amp, which will go either out the main amp, or straight into the mixer. I'm really hoping this will work. Still doing my research on it...
