The main mistake I realised about my old builds is the assumption that walls are built just 1 block deep, with rarely a 2nd layer for acessories. I looked at a few cool designs like this and building walls about 2-4 blocks deep adds so many possibilities for design without needing that many different blocks.
I'd recommend to start like this instead, which also fits with most wall designs here:
1. Choose 2 base materials (like oak wood and regularstone bricks, or blackstone and quartz). You can add more later, but 2 is a good starting point to get enough diversity while maintaining a clear style
2. Start building two blocks deep (one back layer and one front layer) with an option to add one more layer in either direction.

Exact same position. Cobbled deep slate mixed with polished deep slate and the polished deep slate bricks or tiles really makes it pop. Add that with polished black stone or even the bricks and it’s perfect. Matching different block types together really helps make the build pop out a bit! The "candly land" themed wall works better if all the blocked are replaced with polished blackstone bricks, stairs & slabs, just put the same design idea with the blackstone wall and your good

I built a wall like 100 blocks tall, and it goes around about a 10x10 chunk space. It’s just a wall. It needs improvement.
Edit: it’s also got corner peices and is four blocks wide, hollow in the middle.
