  • I was just recently in the Adelaide Hills, and a prettier place there is not. Hilly, lush and imbued with a real Australian bush feel, the place is a maze of winding roads, perched vineyards and apple orchards. Here I look at five wines from five very different makers which stood out in a recent tasting of 60 Chardonnays from the region.

    Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

    Yum yum. Also tried the Heirloom vineyard the other day. Australian Chardonnay has come a long way!

    Great review as always Erin. I have turned some Chardonnay hating friends around with Adelaide Hills examples.One of my favourites is the Pike and Joyce `Kay Reserve' which I enjoyed at the winery minus the fog.Would love to see you have a look at the Clare Valley which aside from their Riesling doesn't get much attention as a region.

      Love Clare Valley. Riesling, Shiraz and Grenache, and a collection of Australian cult/icon producers there: Wendouree, Grosset, Jim Barry etc

    Great Review. 1 winery from WA which we don't see often is Cloudburst. Can you do a review

      Wines very hard to find! Will Berliner is a lovely guy doing a good job in Margaret River. Request noted!

    Great stuff. I trued a Tappanappa Chard once & it wasn’t even their top one you tasted here & I loved it. Did you happen to sample any of the Natural Wines of Chardonnay whilst there? That is the other exciting thing about Adelaide Hills being the home of the Australian Natural Wine movement. Or are these style of wines not your thing?

      Absolutely Jeff - wine is my thing, so of course that includes natural wine. I haven’t tried the wine you speak of yet!

    Hi Erin, you said you would post a video here about Burgundy wine which has a knife on the label. When will that happen?

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  Před rokem +1

      The Prieure Roch wines. That’s right. I tasted the wines and shot the video, however I was so disappointed by the abundant faults that I thought it more sensible not to publish, as it would be a negative review. There is so much to cover that is positive, do we need negative reviews?
      The faults obscured the terroir, and that is a great shame in my book.

    Maybe a daft question but how does Adelaide hills compare with Margaret river for Chardonnay? I prefer the buttery style of woodlands but also love xanadu and leeuwins, what’s your fave out of what you saw?

    • @erinlarkin

      Adelaide Hills does not have the depth of quality that Margaret River does. The TapanappanTiers, and the Penfolds Reserve Bin are the best wines in the area. Margaret river has a higher concentration of great producers and wines.
