RUSSIA'S INVASION OF PHUKET | Will The Island Ever Be The Same?

  • Russian's were flocking to Phuket, Thailand for vacation for decades before the war broke out, but now it is on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. Tourism from Russia has absolutely boomed on the island since conscription began and many of those visitors arrived on a one way ticket. This new change in demographic has a significant impact on the tourism sector, as well as the general economy for regular Thai Phuket residents. I was absolutely shocked to see just how much the island has changed from the last time I was there in 2021 and how Russian is almost the dominant language that you hear in all the popular tourist neighborhoods. Join me and my Dad on a tour of Kata and Karon area as I share my opinion about what this potentially means for Phuket going forward. Would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

Your dad is so awesome. I'm glad to see him enjoy his life. I live in a city just outside of Toronto and I feel sad seeing all the older gentlemen/ladies just sitting outside their overpriced housing when I go for walks. Sometimes they're just literally dozing off in their front porch so when I see what you're doing for your dad, taking him with you to these travels, really shows your character Alina. due to Russian immigrants, prices of even real estate have gone up in Turkey, Greece, all old Soviet republics, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali and also Thailand. they have made the real estate even more expensive for the locals who are now forced to go to their villages. Russians dont bring in anything, they use their own russian travel agents, stay in russian hotels, eat in russian restaurants, use bitcoin to transfer money and spend money on russian establishments. so the Thai economy earns zero from them, infact loses. let me explain. a home whch costs 100,000 $ will become 150,000 due to high demand. so when they sale the condo unit, they already made a 50% profit on it. guess what, most money will be transferred in black, and so the home is still 100,000 on papers with 50,000$ transferred to their russian accounts. win-win-win. also the entire deal is done by russian real estate agents.

Great video the editing on how you were able to add the comparison pictures from your last trip to this one is brilliant. You have mastered the art of editing!!!.
As for your comments about international investment by overseas companies I totally agree. We have the same problem here in Australia, not from Russians but by Chinese.
My view is that I do not have a problem about overseas investment but should not detrimental to the local inhabitants but sadly that is not always the case.

True, but it was never anything close to like it is now. So many Russians are subletting from Thais, then re-subletting to other Russian's for elevated prices. The locals are getting really upset, because it's driving rental prices up. Locals are also really upset at all the illegal Russian business fronts that have sprung up in competition with their own. Eventually the government will step in and make the Russians leave, but it probably won't be for a while.

Your find that the English Germans Swedish are thais favourite nationality as they spend the most money Russians are dispised and are ripped off at every opportunity. Australian aren't really that well liked because of their drinking as they can't handle it and do runners from the bars and are generally rude to the staff. You would have thought it would have been the brits but the good thing is, its too far to travel and if they do come they go to pattaya as its like Spain. Great video!! Interesting conversation on Russians immigrating to Thailand. I did a quick google about Thai real estate, out of curiosity, and found a Thai real estate company stated that in the last year 40% of foreign purchased condos were bought by Russians. Here in Canada there is an Eastern Euopean Cafe in Waterloo, Ontario. They don't advertise and they don't have a sign visible from the street. You mostly hear about it by word of mouth. They have great food and they've been open for 22+ years. They make everything from scratch. Though I tend to order their Perogies I also love their crepes, pelmeni and their solyanka soup which they make with a mix of beef and ham. Their borsch is vegetarian. Safe travels!!

Hi Alina! I took your Phuket Sandbox's advice -- loving it here in Thailand now. I primarily hang out on Patong beach then, and it was quiet and serene. Don't know how busy it is now, but in comparison to your Karon beach video it is probably too crowded now. Similarly in Pattaya there are many Russians, especially in Prantunak... menu are written in Thai, English, and Russian or Chinese in that order. Happy New Year to you and your Dad. That's the allure of Thailand -- foot massage especially after a good workout.

There is, in fact, a civil war, many things are very similar to what happened at the beginning of the 20th century. There are a lot of unresolved issues since the collapse of the USSR. There are also many countries that do not even hesitate to do everything to set fire to Russia's borders. Most of the issues related to this conflict are pure propaganda. About the flight of the Russians, this is an exaggeration. Very few people left the country and those who had no influence on anything, but whose brains were filled with all sorts of nonsense. I am from Crimea and 99% of people here share everything that concerns events, including Tatars. And Phuket has always been a wintering place for Russians. So, those who can afford it, go to warmer climes for the winter.

I love Thailand and visited there for 11 weeks back in early to mid 2018. Stayed in Bangkok and Chiang Mai and felt very safe and liked the locals very much. I live in and am from Scotland. As for the war in Ukrainian, it was started by Zelensky and his banker gangster overlords when they started bombing Eastern Ukrainian about 8 or 9 years ago. So the Ukraine war is the fault of the corrupt Ukrainian government. All wars are Banker wars, bankers run all world governments and they cause all wicked wars. Zelensky is a former and current littoral comedian who starred in a movie as a character that won a reality show to become the president of Ukrainians and then it actually happens in real life!! Total evil corruption. We should be fairly grateful it is the Russians that are over populated in Phuket rather than the demographics that are destroying Britain, USA etc... with their evil violent crimes. At least it's decent Russians.

Hey Alina. What a great episode and to have this time with your Dad, a Saskatchewan farm boy (like my Dad was) is really awesome for you both. Do you know you speak just like him (compliment).
You're absolutely correct about Russians in Thailand. They escaped on vacation or semi-permantely but their nature and DNA will never allow them to speak about the war. Let me tell you about another place in the Eastern Med, North Cyprus to be exact, the Turkish side where, of course, Russians (and most every passport) do not need a visa. In North Cyprus there is a very successfull and lovely resort called Caesar Resort. It's actually huge now, about 3000 apartments owned, some 10 pools, tennis, a market, restaurants, bars, spa, nail salons and a really great beach about 700m's away. It's very family focussed and actually a village, and this time of year it would normally be empty, but today loaded with Russian conscription dodgers, Ukrainian war refugees, and plenty others from the 'Stans, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and Romania. And they all live in peace and harmony and the owners, who are actually Israeli, will not tolerate any bull-shit.
As you well know, a Russian will always find a way.
You're awesome Alina, one amazing young woman. Cheers to you !!

My boss sends me from Thailand to work between relaxing on the beaches and visiting restaurants🙈))) He, by the way, has wintered with his family in Thailand every year except 21 (because of the pandemic). And I expect to be there once again in February. And it is not a one-way trip and not at all because of "Putin's war", as you try to present it. I can't remember whether it was Kata or Karon Beach I stayed at in 1981. Neither had a hint of the tourism you see today. There were simply huts on the beach run by families with a central place on their section of the beach where you could get meals. Southern Phuket was completely undeveloped with small villages here and there. There were barely any vehicles on the roads and it was a real treat to explore the area on a motor bike. I also remember how great the snorkelling was at the south end of the beach along the rocks.
I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit of the Thais, taking advantage of the business opportunity to cater to the large influx of Russians. Last time we were there in 2016, menus where in three languages...English, Thai, and Russian. For years Phuket has been a 'package' vacation destination for Russians, except, the numbers are way more than there used to be. This has distorted the real estate market so that the price of short to medium term rentals has gone through the roof, making it difficult for businesses to recruit Thai workers do the high cost of living. I'm not sure what the long term impact will be except that there is some resentment in certain circles about what this has done to the place. Apparently Ko Samui is having similar impacts, although to a lesser extent. All I know I'm in no rush to go back to Phuket any time soon as I can't get it out of my head what it used to be like.
Great video, Alina. You did a great job of trying to make this non political, except when required in the comments when someone makes an obviously stupid statement. Looking forward to more adventures with you and your Dad. Greetings from Victoria BC and ex fellow Sask resident.
