It’s probably a mix of genetic predisposition along with diet and lifestyle. A lot of desi people (especially the older generation) do not work out consistently or are cognizant of how their diet is impacting their overall health. The next generation of younger desi people will probably buck these trends a bit and we will see if the data changes.

I agree that Indians are the least exercising ethnicity. I don’t think it has anything to do with genetics. Middle eastern people around India are much more into sports. Indians especially the upper middle class people in US (tech workers with large salary) don’t do any exercise except occasional walking. Their kids are in science camp and coding classes all day. I don’t see their kids in basketball, baseball, football, soccer, skiing, cross country or whatever as much as I see people from Afghanistan, Iraq. That’s evident from the fact that they are no where to be seen in Olympics, Worldcup or anything except Cricket despite their enormous population

I heard from some Indian friends in India people view a big tummy as a sign of wealth. It is a cultural thing hard to change. But good food is definitely a party of it. The US was never short of meat and high calorie diet, but not until good tasting food like burgers, sodas, fries that obesity became a problem. Also the reduction of physical activity play a big part as well. So good food + less exercise just speed up the weight problem fast.

This sounds more diet related rather than a genetic predisposition. If you look at rates of heart disease based on cuisine, it's no surprise that the ones with the lowest carbs (& high unsaturated fats) are most conducive to longevity. Exercise can help, but it doesn't entirely mitigate for poor dietary choices. Poverty is also a pivotal factor. Less nutritious, processed foods that are cheaper will obviously do a number on your health over time.

Imo you’re too hard on yourself. Meditate and begin to accept the things you want without doubting it. The lord brings you exactly what you expect. I really only pray in a state of appreciation and faith not doubt and worry.

Even if it was an evolutionary adaptation, famines in the 18th and 19th centuries are irrelevant. Human evolution happen on the timespan of tens of thousands of years, not a couple centuries. Tibetan Sherpas are already an extreme outlier in that adaptation to higher altitudes only occurred in some thousand years.

    The main reason is stress.
Indians are forced to marry by their parents and this forced married life is causing so much stress on Indians. Chinese food is also very salty and oily but they don't have forced marriages, so the rate of cardiovascular diseases is low relative to India or South Asia.
