Dr. Brian Heaberlin (Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor from Lexington, SC) discusses the evaluation and management of the sensation of a lump in the throat (globus sensation).
@@vro4523you probably found out by now but you don't have to worry about anything happening to you during sleep. I was restless the first few nights too but you end up getting used to it, good luck and do your best not to think about it.
I suffer from this and i see a lot of people who fell like it makes harder to breathe, which i get, i felt the same way. But it DOES NOT restrict breathing the feeling comes from your esophagus. Yes it will feel like its harder to breathe, but i helped my anixety a lot to know that wasnt the case.
No way I cannot deal with this for that long to me it feels like mucus stuck in my throat that I cant get to go down when I swallow and when I do swallow it goes away for a few seconds then feels like something is coming back up I was starting to think there was some nasty bug in my throat
Is it the normal or the same if there is something like a small ball or marble that goes up and down on my throat? And may I ask what are the best way I can do prevent it.
I got this feeling for the first time after I had thrown up on a bus journey that was full of people. I started to notice it 2-3 days later when I was out with friends or going to college and it only ever seemed to go away when I am at home or in a comfortable place. I don’t know if this is some form of anxiety but every time I get it I feel like I’m going to chuck my guts up. It’s a pain in my arse.
I get this sensational feeling after I stress out a lot. I’ve had a really stressful past month and how I’m dealing with this globus. It gets so bad that I start gagging and throwing up.
Sometimes, this makes me want to shove my hand inside my throat and yank whatever it is out. Mine started with a numb pain on the left side of my neck, before I had it massaged- It stopped. But the following week, I felt the lump in my throat. It's annoying, I can't sleep well without feeling that lump.
I get it from time to time, especially during night time. But I’ve been getting it often recently and it feels worse than b4, it’s like something is there in my throat but I can’t get it out, sometimes on the upper part of my throat and sometimes lower. Do you feel similar things? I’m just worried abt it , a relief to hear that I’m not the only one struggling with this
I got it recently when I started going back to college I genuinely woke up with it and thought I was choking but I could breathe like normal and eat as normal so I was confused, I then tried ginger and honey and steam because I figured it could be phlegm but it’s actually stress when your anxious and thinking about stuff it comes but once you figure out what your stressing over and get rid of that thought you’ll be relieved to feel it not be there especially at night it’s really annoying trying to sleep but I really hope you manage to get it fixed I’m like 90% there, some days it just comes but I distract myself enough to just not acknowledge it and give it any attention and eventually it goes away
I have this same issue since 1 year now .my symptoms is pain in left side of Thorat, bitter taste in mouth, whenever I swallow my Saliva this lump comes again.breathing problem feels like someone is chocking me .pls tell me how to get rid of this
I have it all the time. I spoke to my GP other day about my blood results and I mentioned it he didn’t even acknowledge that I asked about it? Was like he completely ignored what I said. Felt like he wanted me on/off phone fast as possible and was him that booked the appointment ( got few health issues ) 😕
Hi found this vid. May I just ask, whenever I try to swallow, the right lower part of my neck appears to be moving and the left part does not. No DOB, no dysphagia as well. Is this globus?
I feel like I've has this for like 2 or 3 years now & it's getting to the point where I'm gagging & regurgitating food. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Like I just wanna vibe without my throat spazzing out. Usually it gets even worse after I eat
I'm not a doctor but if you are gagging and regurgitating food, I would have this checked out ASAP! I've been told these are often signs of a more serious issue.
@@izijay4358 I think that's part of it, but it could be a combination. Heartburn happens, but more often I have these random gagging fits. I take omeprazole now & it mitigates some of it, but the gagging still happens from time to time.
Bro if you're gagging, then it might be a sign of burping disorder It happens with me, I can't burp and it often comes to a point when I start choking and gagging so i could release the gasses(they cause globus sensation)
i've been experiencing it for years already. i thought it is normal, is it? whenever i speak there's an air/lump in my throat that is why i can't speak fast and deliver the exact pronunciation of the words i am saying. i need to stop every after 5-10 seconds and if i continue i'll lost my voice and seems like whispering or there will be a change of voice and i'll go stuttering. do i need to consult with a doctor? i also have fear of socializing, i prefer to be alone and my hands always sweat and i always stutter whenever i interact, i can't also speak in public. i am so clueless.
My 24 hour pH study indicates I have documented acid reflux, and my two major symptoms are hoarseness and globus sensation. The symptoms have greatly worsened since I stopped taking Pantoprazole and switched to Pepcid, making me have no zest for anything but watching videos about LPR and my symptoms. Actually swallowing food or water can provide some relief. I called our clinic today and was told to go back to Pantoprazole. I am really confused. Some doctors say do not take PPI, and some say take PPI for the rest of your life. BTW, some people don't understand this globus sensation. Just today, a friend of mine said it was impossible and that it was just "in my brain." Oh my God, she drove me crazy by saying that! I used to describe the sensation as "swelling," while other patients said "lump," until I learned that there was this medical term--globus! How can I get rid of it? I have tried everything from gargling alkaline water to acupuncture. Nothing really helps...
Do you have anxiety? Seems when I focus on it its there. Also do you have excess saliva? Could be a long covid symptom. I know for sure my globus sensation is from this.

Hello Doctor I have inlet patches and recently I'm having trouble swallowing I feel it gets stuck while I swallow. Could this be inlet patch or something else?
I started experiencing this just 2months ago, I had it for just a week, thought it is because of stress. And Then it keeps on reoccurring and went on for almost 3 weeks already.
I smoke and lately I've been wanting to quit. It's like smoke gets stuck in my phlegm and stomach. I feel like this globus is made up of hard jelly like brown phlegm and other foreign things like hair and dust. When I try to work it out through breathing and cough techniques, it doesn't budge it's like it's anchored to my stomach.
Great work Dr!! I love the video, very nice explanation and wonderful personality. I would love to connect with you, I have tried to find you on Instagram but does not seem you have 1. Cheers dr!!

Hello, I had fever, colds and cough and then this lump sensation after the fever. Can you enlighten me if this is all natural because of the cold and coughs?
Having this same problem right now. Not sure if its Globas but yeah,I have no pain, can eat properly and only feel like something is in my throat when I swallow. Honestly I feel pretty ok as it is. Hello guys. I had globus sensation that kinda restricted my airflow and speech. It felt like a lump was stuck in my throat and each time I eat, it relives but returns. I wore my acupuncture slippers around my house for an hour or so, went to bed and woke up with the globus sensation GONE! that slippers works magic! It helps stimulate the feet were organs are connected to and it helped
If you have what most people do then you wake up with nothing but the intensity of the lump in a throat gets worse throughout the day. I have noticed that clonazepam meds help however doc's are reluctent to prescribe it due to addiction which is bullshit.
It has been about a month and the sensation still there. everytime I eat specially meat I feel like some of the meat still stuck there, and it takes sometime for the sensation to go away. ocassionaly when I swallow it hurts on the right or left bottom side of the throat. It also feels like if i had mucus stck so sometimes i might try to spit it out to try to get rid of the sensation. i am not really sure where is coming from, i do consider myself an anxious person and i tend to get acid reflux often, i also have nail psoriasis and dandruff on my scalp if that helps come up with the cause. Any thoughts, or advise?
It’s the second day I feel like this . I have not been getting hungry and feeling something stuck in my throat. I’ve had anxiety and stress before but idk if it’s caused from that. I don’t know if I should see a doctor or not , any suggestions??
So I’ve been dealing with this on and off for 3 weeks . The lump feels like it’s right above my Adam’s Apple like there is mucus that I can’t get out . But it’s almost a lose lose situation . I wake up and it’s gone but I start to get anxious when I start coughing thinking that the feeling is going to come back and it does and it stays until it I go to bed for the night and the cycle repeats.
When I first experienced this I was terrified and I actually had a very dry mouth and throat and I couldn't breathe. It felt very different to anxiety which I've had before. Are then managed to find some water to have and it was a struggle to even swallow the water. Eventually I did and it seemed to help that I wet my throat. It has been on and off for almost a year now and I get that mucus sensation as well where I feel like there's something stuck at the bottom of my throat like a grain of rice or something and I can just never clear it and sometimes I think it's a tonsil stone that never can be dislodged. Overall I can live with it but it's extremely frustrating. I find that it's easily triggered when I speak a lot or exert power in my voice when I speak. Shouting is basically just not even possible anymore. I get the lump in the throat mostly as like a small type of lump feeling when my throat goes dry. But if I continue to try to speak when my throat is dry, I feel like it's a bigger lump in throat. Like a golf ball size. It's almost like speaking makes it worse. When I eat and drink however, I feel like there is no sensation there. I generally don't drink that much water which I know is bad, but I'm just wondering if that's also something that other people have noticed. Is the lack of water part of the reason this happens?? Anyway, just putting it out there. Would love some more feedback and experience stories. 😊

Basically you have to find out what causes it then that's how you get rid of it. I had kidney stones and it stressed my body out. Once the kidney stone left, the globus left. So you have to find out what triggers...it can be you body reacts to something or psychological

Anxiety makes it worse! Lump in throat feeling when youre very anxious is normal. Try to find a moment when youre relaxed, busy with other things etc. Youll find your throat feels less congested. Dont try to eat dry foods when youre anxious because youll have issues and youll think its because of the lump in your throat. That will make your anxiety only worse. Globus is mostly anxiety, either mental or physical
I wish a throat doctor could literally push down the clump of mucus "golf ball" feeling out of my throat. Constant swallowing and constant clearing with nothing coming up to eliminate. Help! Can't we get a CURE for this?
Dr. Can vit deficiency cause this issues... I am also having chest pain and nerve pain since 2 months there is no medical explanation for the same according to the cardiologist and other doctors... Can all these be a symptom of vitamin deficiency
I have the same thing, started in January of this year...My throat felt tight and when I would swallow food or even water, it would feel like a nerve was being pinched in my right chest area. I have had multiple tests and everything normal. Its baffling and scary. Not one doctor could figure it out. Finally went to chiropractor, said I was feeling referred pain in chest muscle coming from neck muscles when I swallowed food. Its slowly getting better but I have had to have my neck and upper back adjusted for the last 7 weeks twice a week. I now believe this to be a nerve issue starting in front scapula neck muscles. Go see a chiropractor. It really helped me!

Unfortunately, this can often be a long-term problem. As I mentioned in the video, this is typically not anything too worrisome, but it is certainly annoying and scary. As some others have mentioned in these comments, anxiety can be a contributing factor and can make this feel worse, although that is rarely the sole source of the problem. It is not uncommon for the feeling to seem like it moves up and down some. I hope this helps. You should always seek more personalized treatment and have an evaluation by your doctor. Best of luck!

It came back last week and i did what he said again and it went away. @zefy is the commentor before ur comment, it may help to give his suggestion a try. Just try you hardest to not focus on the sensation. When i get the feeling in my throat i just swallow it down instead of trying to force a burp. I just keep swallowing while doing smth that would distract me. May be hard the first few days but it works
Have this for a year, and i will say its not very great. When it started the lump in neck was continuously there for a week. Then it got better and only shows up when i yawn or swallow spit repeatedly. Some guy in the comments said his got better with some accupunture slippers.
Globus can certainly be a very annoying problem - for both patients and doctors. I sympathize with all of you. The more you stress about it, the worse it feels. Reducing stress or focus on a problem is certainly easier said than done. Trying consistent reflux medication for at least 2 months can often be helpful, but you should always be evaluated by your physician.
I feel like im jsut dehydration amd thay whay caused it, but know thay i was talking to my brother it clear away but it comes back in seconds i cant i can handel dtress pretty well but this this is causing me to not feel well and causing me to stress more the choking i feel like ill die in my sleep

I have done another video on chronic cough and throat clearing. You may want to check those out. Although stress isn't the sole source of these problems, stress typically makes all of these problems worse.
Frustrating that the doctors want o blame a lump in the throat to acid reflux versus anxiety. Then they get on you tube to solicit your business instead of helping someone right here right now.
Aniexty/acid reflux can cause globus sensation. Just make sure you get it checked with ent and ultrasound, if it’s all clear then you know it’s just an annoying feeling and nothing serious 👍🏼

Maybe GERD
@@izijay4358 I think that's part of it, but it could be a combination. Heartburn happens, but more often I have these random gagging fits. I take omeprazole now & it mitigates some of it, but the gagging still happens from time to time.

I wake up and it’s gone but I start to get anxious when I start coughing thinking that the feeling is going to come back and it does and it stays until it I go to bed for the night and the cycle repeats.
how is it now?
what if I could feel something in my throat while drinking water and have shortness of breath? should i get it checked out?

I have had this for almost 4 years now . Went to the doctors checked everything but didn’t find anything.
This gets worse when I eat certain food especially coffee and energy drinks , it dose get worse at nights but sometimes when I don’t eat a lot of food it goes away. It’s making me miserable, I feel like I can’t get enough air and can’t eat anything

I shouldn't be surprised to hear that medication and or surgery was the option given here. I've had this sensation for 20yrs now and it's not reflux and not a surgical solution. Yes dude , same thing... It sucks... My dad had Esaphogal Cancer , had the same feeling for years. They said it's only acid reflux turned out to be a huge tumor in his throat. I hope I don't have the same.
If it does not go away within several weeks of reflux treatment, you should get checked out. As another commenter has mentioned. Rarely, some of these symptoms could be an early symptom of esophageal or laryngeal cancer.

Globus can certainly be a very annoying problem - for both patients and doctors. I sympathize with all of you. The more you stress about it, the worse it feels. Trying consistent reflux medication for at least 2 months can often be helpful, but you should always be evaluated by your physician.

Frustrating that the doctors want o blame a lump in the throat to acid reflux versus anxiety. Then they get on you tube to solicit your business instead of helping someone right here right now.
Thats so true. Then they offer horrible drugs and they keep the good treatment to themselves
