Johnny Marr is the Lead Guitarist on the Smiths. He worked with Matt Johnson the front man and main creative force for "The The" on 2 albums called "Mind Bomb" (1989) in "Dusk" (1992). The The's music is incredible. The The was one of the major creative influences for Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Noel Gallagher of Oasis, as well as Matt Johnson, consider Johnny Marr the best guitarist in England in the 80's and 90's. There are so many cuts to recommend I do not know where to begin. Just search and check for views. You have to experience The The. Don't let the name of the band fool you!

I recommend "Dogs of Lust" from Dusk and "Violence of Truth" from Mind Bomb.I have some apprehension on "Violence of Truth" as there is a word in "Violence of Truth" that you may find offensive but do not take it the wrong way or not the way it was intended and do not want it to taint you regarding the artist or band. For the pre-Johnny Marr years, that have more electronic influence, I recommend "Perfect" from the "Soul Mining" album and "Sweet Bird of Truth" from the 1986 "Infected" album.

The Smiths are the great underrated band of the 80s. Morrissey's sheer balls -- standing in front of the audience as an effeminate world-weary gay man, especially during this time period -- are truly bad-ass. The melodies, the lyrics, the excellent grooves by a wonderful rhythm section of Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, and finally, the truly excellent guitar playing of Johnny Marr all combine to make the Smith tremendous. Every album is full of gems.

@@SilentAssassin01234 I understand that he has said he does not identify as gay. Be that as it may, Morrissey's artistic personality was effeminate and it stood in contrast to traditional expressions of masculinity. However he personally identifies, his artwork created space in rock culture for a man to be himself, even if that self was gay, or bisexual, or "humansexual." Morrissey wasn't the only artist who did so at that time, but he was courageously himself. Props.

Great reaction to my favorite song by the Smiths, I have to say you nailed this one Justin. For me this song is a master class on how to write hooks into a song using instruments and effects. There are subtle repeating lines/sounds, starting with Johnny Marr's guitar. I remember when we tried to cover this song in the early 90's and trying to get that echoing guitar sound. We never could get that exact echoing grunge texture Marr was creating. These repeating sounds throughout the whole song keeps the listener always engaged. For me this song is borderline genius and perfect.

The reverberating guitar, reoccurring sounds and melodic lines, the scraping of strings, the bass the drums and lets not forget the cherry on top vocals. I can't think of a song that has so much color in it. It's like Da Vinci or Van Gogh with a paint brush. My #2 favorite band ever. This song is a staple and a classic due to that opening guitar vibration and Morrissey's forever reflective lyrics. But it is a simple song and not representative of The Smiths catalog. Most of their songs are under four minutes in length with more progression changes. Johnny Marr, the guitarist, is my favorite ever. And Morrissey is my favorite lyricist ever. I'm glad you liked it.

I'm so glad that you've finally listened to The Smiths. However I would definitely recommend checking out more of them as well as Morrissey as a lot of their isn't quite as repetitive as I personally find this one. There is a Light That Never Goes Out, Panic, Please Let Me Get What I Want, and National Front Disco are all songs I recommend.

I was pretty busy becoming a Deadhead when this came out ... but I admired The Smiths from afar. "Girlfriend in a Coma" is funny. I suppose you'll move on to Joy Division and New Order ... all that early 80s British stuff ... what with the hair and the synths and the trench coats.

"You shut your mouth, how can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am human and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does." Thirteen years later he'd come out as being in a relationship with a man and never really having been attracted to women. (To this day, he insists he's a "humasexual" (not a real word) and not a homosexual, for no readily apparent reason.)

    • @oscillatewildly6553

"So you go and you stand on your own...and you leave on your own...and you go home...and you cry...and you want to die" ***Reactionary sips water and laughs*** Lol. The Smiths are such an iconic band, although this one, tbh, I find rather boring. My favorite songs are the ones that really highlight Johnny Marr's amazing guitar work, like "Big Mouth Strikes Again" and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others." This song doesn't really accomplish that. As far as the length of the song, I think the second half of the song is more interesting than the first -- when he sings the stanza that you were grinning at, is when it gets intriguing. It's a long song, yes, but I really think it works. One thing I love is the guitar crescendo that happens before each verse.

Never thought this tune was very special. Yes, this version is too long. The quality of the playback is not that great. Considering that, his voice on this track still sounds excellent. That's what makes the song for me. Not really the music. My favorite, as many already recommended, is There is a Light that Never Goes Out. Bigmouth Strikes Again is another pretty funny one. Not too familiar with their work or Morrisey's.
