      Pens, ink, stationary and other writing supplies. You have people that get 1 pen and 1 bottle of ink in blue/blue-black/black and are set. Then you have people like me with 10+ pens and over 30 bottles of ink with different colors, properties and manufacturers. And I started around October.

    The fountain pen community is such a wholesome one at times like this. You don’t need to spend a lot, and as my local fountain pen store owner says, everybody deserves a good pen. Even if a fountain pen isn’t for you, I feel having a writing instrument you love is beautiful.
    We will lose the art of writing if all we and those after us know are disposable pens of poor quality who make your hand hurt. There’s so much more magic that can characterize a pen than just being a tool.

    I'm Japanese but, his "words choice" is also ASMR. He's speaking in highly sophisticated way with classic/old word-choices. You never can hear young people speak like him even when they are trying to sound formal. it's quite beautiful Japanese.

      People who like Japanese culture and or have visited the country and enjoyed their way of life are just normal people.

    Fountain pens are really good for learning to write in Japanese; they're a better fit for the writing style the characters were originally designed for than a ballpoint pen. I always used one when I was first learning.

      As someone who lives in American, there is a level of entitlement among customers. Not saying all customers, but a mentality of “a customer’s always right” has been polluted. It was supposed to mean that a customer always knows what they want. Now it just means that even if a customer is totally wrong about a policy or item, the managers will more than likely just cave.

    This one is quite short, but these kind of sales situations are my favorite for unintentional ASMR ... a salesman or woman patiently explaining a product or service to me, even though (or because?) I know they want to sell something, are sooo relaxing that I sometimes end up asking trivial follow up questions to extend the conversation:)
    Also, being in Japan right now, I really appreciate the general politeness and attention to detail - I love it here! :)

      I first noticed I would get ASMR when my grandfather would tell me a story while flicking through a newspaper or something. But as years have gone by I too get the sensation mostly when someone is providing me with a service, whether its selling an item or their services in general.
      Luckily it's a huge part of my career that I deal with people offering me their services regularly :D become something I look forward to in my work life.
      Edit: A recent example was choosing a branding specialist for a project and having different candidates pitching me their service/package. Was especially prominent with that particular project. I should start documenting it really lol.

      The irony is that both the fountain and ballpoint pen were invented outside of Asia, with the latter's design taking many decades (if not, near a full century) to be understood by the Japanese. To their credit, they incorporate and covet goods things, even if the invention is not their own.
      The salesman and how he conducts himself and his boutique clearly demonstrates this.

      I hate bic, whenever I get a bic pen it has terrible ink flow, or just not the type of flow of ink that I like. I like the ooly splendid fountain pen, because it has a great feel and a nice grip.

    Reminds me of when I was buying a bed with my wife in Japan. The store assistant sat us down at a desk to give us mattress options and explain the benefits in a suuuuuper softly spoken voice. The same thing happened when we were buying a TV in a different shop and I almost fell asleep. The customer care in Japan is very good.

      @@davidmayes4212 Absolutely, fountain pens last ages if cared for, clean and refill, my first one is a vintage one from 1947 and other than being refurbished with new rubber gaskets for the vacuum plunger it's essentially good as new because it's been cared for and it was made well in the first place.

      From what I can tell, the biggest issue with badly written Japanese is incomplete/unconnected strokes in characters. Imagine if someone wrote a "b" but the little hump was disconnected from the line.
