Avoid Grease Fires! How To Clean Your Weber Q

  • Today I'm showing how I clean my Weber Q. This needs to be done every month or two depending on how often you grill. If you don't, you will eventually have a grease fire.
    Enjoy!

    I’ve decided to use a banana bread baking tray instead and then line it where the hole is under the bbq. It’s deeper so no chance of the oil falling out and not wasting foils.
    I must admit though the Weber Q is the easiest bbq that I ever owned when it comes to cleaning.

      So funny I should see this now...I had tried a toothpick which didn't work...so then I had a bundle of insulation stays (round metal pieces about 18" long) that I thought would work...diameter too big...so as I stared at the burner tube and several clogged holes the cartoon light bulb lit over my head...I too grabbed a large paperclip from my desk, bent the one end out straight and it fit...I pushed it all the way down and moved it around a little, then went to the next one...worked like a charm...one other thing, actually two other things...I cleaned the screen end that connects to the gas regulator and modified a brass spiral brush from Harbor Freight (comes in a pack of 5 or 6 of different diameters) to run inside the burner tube...a bunch of crap came out after doing that...

      @@ernestpaul2484 I just gave my Q 120 its annual deep cleaning Wednesday. I dismantled it and cleaned the burner tube first then I took the cook box and shroud and the cover to the coin operated car wash. 4 dollars for 20 minutes and it worked well. Then I assembled it and fired it up for about 15 minutes. The burner tube is beginning to give out but its 5 or 6 years old now. NO complaints......

    I've had my Q for about 7 years now and it works great...to clean it, I take it apart completely and give it a shot of Easy Off oven cleaner after scraping, then I blast it with a power washer. Put it back together and get it nice and hot to sterilize it. Works like a charm ...the problem with cleaning it as he describes here is that when it gets really well used, scraping alone won't do the job...over time even with regular scrapings that thick varnish really builds up. Easy Off is pretty nasty (wear rubber gloves) but it really works.

    great video, but how do you clean the inside of the lid?

  • @Mike-up6go
    @Mike-up6go Před 3 měsíci

    Two things I would do different.........make it easier to clean by removing the burner. Takes only 10 seconds and a screwdriver. Second.........and this is from Weber. Use that same brush you did to clean the burner, but run the brush directly across the burner tube and not parallel to it. That way all the debris falls away from the burner tube holes instead of getting pushed into them.
    Also, I have found using GUNK brand engine degrease ( the gel version) does wonders on grease stains on the inside of the grill and the lid. After a few sprays and wipings with a cloth I use some DAWN dishwasher soap and water to give it a final wipedown and to dissapate some of the engine cleaner stench I would not use any type of oven cleaner on the grill. Most of them are highly corrosive to aluminum surfaces.
    The method I described above has worked extremely well and I have restored a rather dirty, greasy, cruddy, Weber Q2200 to cant tell from new status.

    I was hoping to find a solution to my problem...after cleaning grates, the next time I grill, my meat gets stuck to the grates really badly! Even if I drench them with Weber BBQ non-stick grate spray right before I put the meat on. The last time i skipped the Weber spray & tried just putting a lot of olive oil on steaks before grilling them on the clean grates. They did stick a bit in some spots, but not so badly that it ripped the meat like it has done in the past. Wondering if I should put olive oil in the grates themselves? If so, should I just rub some on the cool grates before turning on the grill?

    • @GallaghersGrub
      @GallaghersGrub  Před 6 lety

      Jenn, you may be flipping your meats before they're ready to be flipped. Most meats like chicken, you actually know it's ready to be flipped when the skin doesn't stick. Also, in this video I show how to oil the grates:

    The burner tube is easily removed by taking out one screw on the left side near the igniter. I then soak it along with the grates. The lid removes easily with two pins and clips, and you can really get this thing looking like new!

      Thanks for the tips. I think I may need to replace the burner. Not sure though. Also, the outside of my lid is getting black from smoke. I've scrubbed it but it doesn't seem to come off. Any ideas on how to clean that or should I paint it?

    • @TCB031
      @TCB031 Před 6 lety

      The burner is easily removed. Unless it's rusted, you might try giving it a good soak in hot soapy water. I then shake and try to blow out any water, out it back on the grill and light it to get rid of any moisture.No real recommendation for smoke stains, but a google search might turn up some soap or cleanser that is good for this. If you repaint it, I'd recommend a high temperature paint if you can find it in a color you like.

    • @GallaghersGrub

      With the small tanks, you probably should, especially if you're moving your grill from one place to another. You could bump the gas knob and lose all your gas. The larger tanks attached by the hose have shut off valves themselves so you have a double layer of safety.

    It looks dirty even after cleaning. I don’t feel comfortable with that cleaningness in the video.
    By the way, I think Weber could have designed the fire outlet holes on the side instead of on the top of the pipe. By this way, you will get the same fire but the grease/oil from the food won’t be able to enter into the small hole that easy. They could make the holes on the bottom too, by doing that, you would never need to be worry about the blockage of the gas path. Good product, but space for improvement, Weber. Personally I use only one side for meat, the other side for vegetables etc.. then I only need to wash one side of the panel intensively. I do mean a “wash” not a “wipe” as in the video. The panel can be put into the dishwasher.
