Welcome to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, today we're plugging into the Shin-Juku Drive from MXR. Shin Suzuki of Shin's Music in Japan is the country's foremost amp and pedal technician, and nobody knows the D-style amp quite like him. He brings this knowledge stateside, and the Shin-Juku Drive is a collaboration between the man himself and the engineers of MXR. The result is an extremely touch-sensitive and dynamic amp-like drive that brings as much versatility to the table as the amp it's modeled after. Between its three knobs, you have access to humble, lucid clean tones, all the way through amp-rumbling sustain-heavy crunch. This variance is given with a simple twist of the Gain knob, and when combined with your guitar's volume knob, the possibilities are near-endless. As you might expect, the Shin-Juku stacks with other pedals like a champ, and placing it either before or after your existing drive section will lend some extra hair to your tone. The Dark switch reconfigures the gain structure of the Shin-Juku to a mellower, more blues-ready drive tone with a smokier character. Higher gain Dark settings add extra tube-like sag and compression like a cranked amp. And just like all MXR pedals, the Shin-Juku Drive is precision engineered and manufactured made right here in the States. - Hudba
been waiting for this... sounds great!! thanks Andy
Andy killing it as always! Amazing stuff!
the no pick thing drives me crazy... you sir are a freak of nature
I think it may be the best tubes pedal. I've heard. "Smoky character", that's it exactly. It cuts the jangle, and veers towards fuzz. Perfect.
tubes pedal?
Sweet-sounding overdrive, for sure.
Sounds nothing like you'd expect a D style pedal to sound...turns out thats a good thing. Really nice textures on this thing. Killa chops as always, Andy!
There's a Dumble for sale at a nearby guitar shop for 90k. I think this is more in my budget. Thanks for the great demo!
You should have bought it
The look on your face was telling me you where really digging it with the Les Paul. Definitely captured the vibe.
nice play on words in that pedal. and nice playing, of course.
ottima demo come sempre
Love the fuzzed out drive at 4:13.
Just ordered the Shin-Juku can't wait to play on it...
how do you like it? It's my favorite OD pedal of all time now. The dark switch with the tone at 3 oclock is perfect
The entire thing from 5:32 til the end is totally awesome
Good sounding overdrive, I'll need to try one out.
I hear what sounds like a Johnny Winter influence in your playing.I am not one for lots of boxes of color ,but I dig your demos. Thanks
Thanks, yes I love Johnny Winter!
Heard about this pedal and thought, 'I wonder when Andy will demo it?' Boom.
I just watch these to hear Andy play cool shit! If I bought every pedal that sounds impressive in Andy's hands, I'd likely own all of them. They all sound dope. Keep it up.
I always watched these demo videos. Then not too long ago a picture of my guitar rig got shared on their page and I realized it was the same group of guys.
Great demo. After hearing these tones I wondered, how about an Andy's top 10 distortion pedals?
Hey Andy, which pedal would you recommend this one or... Just kidding. Thanks for being here.
That's a pretty bad ass pedal!
First tune does have that steely Dan flav. Very cool.
I love watching your videos Andy, up until I realize that no matter how many of these pedals I buy, I will never be able to shred and jam like you. Andy make a band, make an album and tour so I can watch play live. Oh and you'll have to come to Utah. I know I know....
He uses the same pick as me, an invisble one!
'Like all MXR pedals, it's precision engineered and manufactured right here in the States'. I was told by someone at Dunlop that at least some are developed in the US but made in Taiwan.
Hey Andy, would it be possible to get a demo of the mxr Il Torino? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!
Un oh... I want this pedal. Damn.
KINDA LOOKS LIKE THE MXR GT-OD, I WISH I COULD FIND ONE IN A STORE TO CHECK IT OUT CAUSE THE GT-OD WAS ONE OF THE BEST OD'S I EVER HEARD BUT IT WAS THE ONLY 1 IN THE STORE AND THE GUY PLAYING IT ENDED UP BUYING IT
Start of vid riffs recall a little Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias
I LOVE the Les Paul Andy.
Is that a Standard ? And what does Gibson name that specific colour / finish ?
This is the first MXR that I've thought, "hey, I'd really like to own this" Thanks.
Yep, they make solid stuff. Few knobs, but I like my pedals like my amps: quick to dial and with personality. My pedalboard is mostly MRX plugged into an Orange amp. The rest, you do with your fingers ;-)
carbon copy delay! literally the only pedal i use *every time*
MXR makes countless amazing pedals. Super solid brand. Check out the Super Badass Distortion and you will not be disappointed. And it’s only $99. Eric Gales uses it as well if of other mistaken. He also used the MXR Bass Envelope Filter. The Blue Box is awesome too. So is their Uni-Vibe.
Mike D For real. I have five MXR pedals now.
Does it have the crappy decay like the dumbloid?
is this good for bass???? it sounded amazing in this demo
Be better if the "Dark" button were a tap on switch on the bottom corner. Get that "Free" sound throat to the sound here as well. Which was the Green axe a Suhr? Kind of like it without the Dark down. Cool pedal though for sure. Like that sound with the gain about half way... maybe 11 O'Clock. Nice boxy but jangle in there too. Under 200 for a change too lol
Want!
I don't know but it sounding like that kind of amp
but it does sound good
I have some really good overdrive pedals and I still keep going back to old faithful, better than my OCD pedal and my ts9 mij tube screamer pedal, it's a Beringer Tube Monster VT999, blows them all away hands down. Way underated, try one and you will be wanting one.
Ron Carter haha
What is the opening song Andy plays?
Everytime I wonder how you can play with so much attack with your thumb. Amazing playing, thanks for the demo!
Pretty sure it’s the opposite he plays with less attack on the fingers and says is in the pot if you got an 80s settings with the pic it will probably sound like trash
He’s probably set much different on the amp than you would with a pick...playing with more dynamic
Fingernails ain’t to different t picks i gots talons! Still can’t play like this mind.
I just watch these videos to see you play. But I did like the pedal this time, I think just once before I saw one that interested me, the rest just sounds like any other pedal. To be fair, the standards are set, and sound technology isn't exactly taking huge leaps so it's understandable that there aren't hundreds of completely unique sounding pedals.
Intro jam sounds a bit like 'Ashita Tenki Ni Naare' by Happy End. Keeping with the Japanese influence?
Make tomorrow's weather good.
After spending 1/4 of my life reviewing pedals ( Okay I overstated a bit ) It seems there are more varieties/brands of drive pedals than there are guitar players. Something about this one sets it apart from the rest. What that is I don't know but it sounds unique, in a good way.
Excellent point! There is something very unique about this one.
Nice demo, nice playing, and nice sounding pedal as per usual, but I gotta say that all these overdrive pedals are starting to sound the same to me...
Personally, I'm not hearing anything different or new here. Don't they all seem to be "touch-sensitive", "amp-like", and "clean-up nicely with your volume control"?
yes its very true. I build clones and have done probably 40 or so different overdrive pedals and they typically sound a little different but only to a "trained ear" my wife couldnt care less lol. the feel is what sets good from great.
What's that green color guitar Andy uses? I like it :)
Reverend Club King I think.
Yes..checked it..Reverend Club King 290..thanks :)
When will Rebecca Dirks return with daily music news?
PGS needs to make a comeback with a new store downtown PDX.
Please I have ppl interested in helping and with guitar center clovsing and his proximity to reverb it’s a no brainer
Andy is legend
D-style is dumble right?
You've got it.
Zac F Thanks Zac!
Dan Higginson D = Dick. Dick style.
Does anyone know what song/band Andy plays at: 5:26?
I might be wrong, but maybe something from Neil Young?
Would this work as a tube screamer alternative to boost an already overdriven amp?
I would suggest getting a more tube screamery pedal if you just want it for that , but you can certainly use it as a boost and a touch of gain
Harry Souter Thanks, I was thinking this pedal would help something like an amp that really needs something to smooth it out but still have that gain sound.
I've never heard a Dumble sound anything like this lol
Yeah it really doesn't represent that sound at all. Much closer to a tubescreamer
Ever played a Dumble? No me neither but I do have a Zendrive which Robben Ford says gets him very close to his Dumble. This sounds very similar,a bit darker maybe. Tubescreamer it definitely ain't!
I just got a MXR Shin-Juku and sent it back. The TONE knob was feeding back something awful and confirmed by the shop I got it from. Expected far better from MXR
Save your money and get a bheringer VT-900.
The thing is massive but gets you this tone, with controls for master volume, gain, and a 3 band eq.
And there's a preamp tube in it.... Running at 9v, but nonetheless there is a tube you can swap out for different tones.
Every time the expression "amp-like" is used for a pedal, one of those magic tube-shaped elves that live inside real amps dies. Think about the little ones, guys!
haha, very true 😎
They make a short speech before dying: “I only regret that have but billions of electrons to give for your tone.”
Rafael Andrade brilliant!
Rafael Andrade Like I get it if it's a DI pedal/preamp or something that is MEANT to sort of bypass the need for an amp, but for overdrives? It's ridiculous. I HAVE an amp, it doesn't need to be more of an amp, gimmie the tone variety. "Amp-like" says nothing about a pedal.
Andy it always sounds to my ear that you use a lot of mids. What are your settings? I play a les Paul through a Mesa express 550 + 112 and it seems that I just can't get it right.
Mesa kids are kinda wonky I find. Just my experience from owning one. Don't push the kids in a mesa
I think he demos with a Fender DRRi amp. I own one and it is very mid heavy.
+johnlarinto yeah that explains it. Thanks!
Mids*
They are but Mesa's miss are quite aggressive when pushed
single coil test??
The green Reverend guitar was single coil. It's got p-90's.
Tasty
I bet Andy goes home at night and plugs into an Axe Fx
Can you demo with a strat or tele or some other non-P90 single coil???
Does anyone actually know what a Dumble really sounds like?
awwwyeaboyeeee The funny thing is, I hear CZcamsrs (and only CZcamsrs) talk about the "D" sound, and they also say no 2 "D" amps sounded alike... so there is that. It's all cork-sniffery at this point.
Try this czcams.com/video/sKunm4Z1IXA/video.html No pedal I have heard gets even close. I've got a Zendrive which just about gets you to within spitting distance.
The sound of Dumble is a ‘59 Bassman being boosted by a DOD BiFet boost
"Humble"....
Humble to rumbling and all points in between. What else could one possibly need?
If Andy ain't reviewing it... I ain't watching it...
I don't feel the Dumble.
"Humble"....LOL
Tube Screamer clone or nah?
My three least-favorite letters in the pedal world: MXR.
Nobody cares. Douche.
... wait how? Have you ever played their pedals? Also how is it not boss?
Apparently you do. I guess you work for them? I'm not a fan of their pedals and I don't think they sound very good compared to what else is out there, though I do like the Carbon Copy well enough. Regardless, your over-aggressive reply seems pretty silly.
Ha!
come on, their not that bad, their phaser and flanger man
The pedal sounds great but the video voice narration and the text video description sound like slimey salesmen selling time-share real estate.
wow, it's almost like PGS is a business.... that sells things.... fucking WILD
