I've gone through at least 4 major ammo shortages just since 2000. Every time, people think it is the end of the world. You learn to stock up when times are good and ammo is abundant (and prices are good) and you don't buy during the brief times of the shortages and you let the fools pay the high prices.

Here in South Texas (brazoria county) ammo is commonly available at academy at pre-panic prices. .223/5.56, 9mm, and .45 acp are on the shelves almost every morning. 3 box limit, but it is there. Sometimes one lucks out and finds the 150 rd and 200rd range packs as well. Maybe we're lucky, but I just buy steel case for practice and save my prepanic defensive and hunting stock for those two purposes. It's insane seeing steel case .223 going for 60-70 cents per round on the gun trading sites, and brass commonly for 1.00 a round, when all one must do (at least locally to me) is research for the bargains. Got 5.56 green tip the other day at 9.99 per 20, and 100rd boxes of monarch steel case for 29.99. I know some people loathe steel case, but for plinking and practice it keeps my brass from getting used up. The only thing occasionally hard to find is your m193 and hunting loads. Got hornady 55grain spire points last week, but haven't seen m193 for at least a month.

Federal screwed me over on defective 6.8spc fusion ammo.
I had contacted them and told them I was having a huge issue with over pressure on these rounds.
I pulled 7 bullets and weighed the charges.
They range from 25.3grs to 27.9grs.
It was fine ball powder with 4 of the charges having lots of extruded powder mixed in(20-30 pieces).
The ballistics expert that called me back tried to bullshit me to that federal didn't load their charges by the weight of powder in their cases, but by pressure the charge creates!
They sent me a postage paid box to send back two boxes out of my eight remaining boxes.
Two months later I got a check for $50! And zero explanation what was wrong nor what to do with my six remaining boxes!
I called them multiple times and emailed them several times.
They never got back to me!
They did pull all of the 6.8spc fusion from the shelves in the Boise area though!
Federal don't give a shit about it's citizen customer base!

It sots a lost of money to add manufacturing capacity in any industry, along with considerable red tape, etc, that adds time and cost to adding new plants. What we don't know is if Federal's current plants are maxed out in capability, and if Federal would need to add completely new plants to increase overall capacity. If so, that is an entirely different kettle of fish, then just adding shifts to maximize production. I would expect Federal is running their plants at max capacity possible, while maintaining quality of the product. Plus, with only 4 primer manufacturers in the US, that is a limiting factor, especially when once again, we are seeing impacts from the Remington bankruptcy. Not sure about regulations for importation of primers from other countries, or if the Czech, Italian and Russian primer manufacturers even have capacity to spare. Much of the steel casing I have looked at are Berdan primed, so those primers are not compatible with US boxer primed cases.

Although the ammo shelves are always bare when I check to see if there's a box or two that I can purchase, I continue to look in hopes that I'll be there when the next shipment hits the shelves. I realize everyone is trying to find ammo. So again, thank you for all of the hard work and time everyone is putting in to try and supply the demand. God bless you all.

There is not a brass(metal) shortage, go back two years and look at the prices of rolled brass prices, these companies make their own brass(casings) if there is a casing shortage it's on them. This guy has a monopoly on ammo production in this country, you think he wants that to end, he as already complained about the Trump slump in sales. He had to pay off 200 workers in 2017. Now he says brass shortage but wants to get Remington plant running. How does opening a new plant help with a brass (metal) problem? Don't have enough for the plants already running but open new plant. He doesn't care if you have it or not . What does everyone here say,, ha ha. Should have bought it when they had it in stock. No greedy f**ks buy whole shipments and sale of on gun broker. ammo shouldn't be going for the price it is. I don't want to here supply and demand shit, this is so artificially done. Keep in mind that the riots weren't just contained to one or two major cities, but happened all across the county reaching down to smaller towns. And the destruction was widely shown on tv and social media. As a result, many who didn't own a fire arm before ran in masses to the gun stores. Combine this with the fact it was happening congruent with the build up to a major election, its very believable that the ammo factories can be (and are) in high gear and yet still the shelves can be empty. Also, panic buying only keeps the demand high and increases the amount of time the shortage will last. Thats not to say don't go buy ammo, but maybe if you have a decent supply already, you pass on a couple boxes at the store so that the next guy can get some.
