- "Find The River" from R.E.M.’s best-selling 1992 album, Automatic for the People. Preorder the 25th anniversary album: found.ee/REM-automatic25-r
R.E.M. is excited to announce the reissue of their landmark album Automatic For The People to commemorate the record's 25th Anniversary. Due November 10 via Craft Recordings, the remastered album will be available in a variety of formats, the most extensive of which is the Deluxe Anniversary Edition, which will feature the album in its entirety mixed in Dolby Atmos.
The album (plus bonus track “Photograph,” featuring Natalie Merchant) was remixed in Dolby Atmos by Automatic’s original producer, Scott Litt, and engineer, Clif Norrell. This technology delivers a leap forward from surround sound with expansive, flowing audio that immerses the listener far beyond what stereo can offer. It transports the listener inside the recording studio with multi-dimensional audio - evoking a time when listening to music was an active, transformative experience, and reigniting the emotion you felt when you first heard the album in 1992. R.E.M.’s Automatic For The People is the first album to be commercially released in this expressive, breathtaking format.
In addition, the 4-disc Deluxe Edition will offer a wealth of previously unreleased material. The band selected 20 never-before-heard demos from the LP’s sessions, including the fully-realized, unreleased track “Mike’s Pop Song” and the oft-mused about song, “Devil Rides Backwards.”
“Mike’s Pop Song” is available NOW as an instant grat track with preorder of the reissue.

This has to be one the most beautiful songs ever written
just discovered
My favorite rem song.. Rock on
This is the last song on the album that I remember using to cure my sadness and depression as a teen in the mid-1990s, listening in the dark before falling asleep. I would start the album full of doubt, uncertainty, fears, ... by the time this song played, I was always in such a dramatically better mood. As a result this is one my favorite songs as well.
@Dangerous Thinking Very much better - thanks for asking... it was a time I was going through as a teen, low self-esteem, was hiding a lot of things from everyone I knew, never felt truly at ease.. struggled with addiction from then until recovery brought me a higher power and peace. It's tough to put a finger on exactly what was going on with myself back then, but the power of music is a truly amazing thing - songs can reach so many people in different ways. I hope your situation has progessed since 6 months ago.. Crazy times we live in. I needed this song yesterday due to "sheltering in place".
It is.
I seriously think that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I've been an REM fan since I was 14 and losing My Religion sent them stratospheric and it was only recently that the similarities between this and Wendell Gee from Fables struck me. This song is like Wendell Gee breaking out of its chrysalis and fluttering into the evening sunlight.
Every time I hear this I think of Wendell Gee, glad I'm not the only one!@@raithrover1976
Right On
Thinking the same thing... and, damn, I'm old!er!
It very much is.
One of THE most underrated songs ever written. A masterpiece
To be frank, this one is much better than Everybody Hurts. 1993-wise
I absolutely agree. I never paid close attention to the lyrics or gave it much of a listen, to be honest, until 10 or so years ago. I've. been a huge R.E.M. fan for years and it surprised me that this song wasn't always one of my favorites. Then, once time, I stopped to listen closely and I was floored. Not only are the lyrics among the most beautiful ever written, the melody, harmonies, and instrumental are absolute perfection.
Not underrated. Very popular. Look at the viewership here.
@@englishthroughtamil1354Yea but compare that to some of their more popular tracks. Big difference
I'm an average middle aged Yorkshireman from England. I bought this album on release. Always has and will always be my favourite track. Absolutely sublime.
peter kelly happy Yorkshire day
@@darcycarmody6908 thank you
Yeah...me too....middle aged, Yorkshire and bought it on release date and favourite track...I had to double take when I read that...thought I’d been drunk posting again..ha!
well look at us, picking up a classic from 30 yrs ago all the same week.
I had a Michael Stipe craving, hadn't heard this album in 25 years!
middle-aged woman on the west coast saying hi.
same here mate MOT
I bought Automatic in '92 and loved it. Now it's 32 years later and the words are starting to hit hard.
We were so lucky.
Went to a party as an 18 year old. I remember walking in and the CD player had 3 albums next to them.
Definitely Maybe, Urban Hymns and this. What a night that was.
We didnt realise it at the time but that was a really special time 👊🏼
So true but keep rocking
My son passed away last Sunday at the tender age of 28. Been looking for a song to be played in church. This is is so fitting, it's beautiful. My heart goes out to all parents who have lost their loved ones. ♥
I'm sorry for your loss...
@@pungmide Thank-you for your reply. I don't wish any parent to feel they way I feel at this moment in time. Being a parent you don't expect your child to pass away before you, that in itself is hard to take in.
Just read your comment. I'm so sorry for you, no child should die before their parents. But please never give up, your son would certainly not have wanted that. A lot of
greetings from Germany.
@@christophmenke1610 hi Chris. Thanks for you comments. You are right when you say ' my son would never have wanted that'. Our children are the future, so we all need to protect them and hopfully guide them in the right direction. Thanks again. Stay safe.
Stephen i could not think of a more beautiful song to be played at a funeral , i would like this to be played at mine , very sorry for your loss , keep strong Mathew
Now 66 still miss this band so much. This track will live forever in the hearts of true REM fans
My cat passed away last night. This was his favorite song. Every time he heard michael stipe's voice he'd get this ethereal look on his face. I played this for him as he passed. RIP my cat Vedder and God bless REM.
So sorry for your loss ❤️🌹
You will meet your kitty in heaven. That's such a cool story.Your cat is awesome!!
Sorry for your loss
So sweet, so sad. We'lll see them all again.
Sorry for your loss. Enjoy the memories of your friend😻
I turned 55 last week & REM have accompanied me through my whole adult journey.
This song helped me through my 20s, heartbreak & disillusionment with the world. I stop what I'm doing every time I hear it & just let it in.
There is some deep, unexplainable connection.
Hands down, the greatest band ever to make music.
I miss them & thank them for the journey.
Same, 1967 baby. I’m just going back to this after a love affair with it in the nineties and it set me a sail to go get a life. It’s heartbreaking and life affirming, all the themes of the songs that have materialised for me in real life. Now coping with many deaths, I am in constant tears on listening to Find the River. The secrets of life were always held within it but I had to leave to find them.
I’m 53 and your note really resonates. I lost my dad to cancer in ‘94 and I would listen to this song before falling asleep. I don’t know for how long but it felt like months. The song made me feel less alone. REM always made me feel like what I was going through mattered. Love these guys.
Their music has gotten me through so much in my life and it still does
I feel the same. I listen to a lot of music, but this song is just special. I keep coming back it. And keep discovering new nuances, when I get to different ages in my life. I think I got the gist of it when I was in my 20s, but now, while I am nearing my 50's, it offers another form of comfort and insight. And its good to know other people are out there that have the same feeling. :)
@Mike van Schijndel I am close to 50 too and and you are exactly correct. I am so happy I was able to see them in 1995. It was a memorable experience. They did all their really old stuff. Thanks for the response.
I gave my 81 year old mom a copy of Automatic when it came out and she listened to it almost daily for months. Little did I know she’d be gone at 82. Knowing my mom and dad listened to these beautiful songs is so beautiful memories.
The final three songs on Automatic are the most beautiful the band ever wrote. I always think of them as a part concept, within the whole concept of mortality that the album explores. Man on the Moon is about not accepting life for what we're told, Night Swimming is about innocence, regret and the need to enjoy every moment from our lives, and Find The River is acceptance of mortality, that we are all here for a finite time and not to worry what we do or don't do with the time, because at the end there's a river for all of us that leads to whatever or wherever we believe it does. I'm sure this isn't anything that Michael had in mind....and I don't care because my version of this has brought me great comfort over the nearly 25 years that I've adored this album. :)
Excelent
Spot on
life is measured out in moments not hours nor minutes. time is an illusion and death is not the end in Jesus. troll me if you like.
Well stated!
Stipe has said that New Adventures was where REM hit their peak but he is wrong it is definitely Automatic, that album is completely beautifully perfect. You're right in your analysis, it has themes of life and death however you want to interpret them.
I was so lost when I was younger. Got 5 years for armed robbery. I used to play this tape constantly. So many lines throughout the album I related too and probably this album saved my life.
Stay strong brother
You’re not judged by your past. What happens now is all that matters. You’re doing alright
Mike’s piano/organ play shouldn’t be overlooked in all of this. Simply stunning.
And those harmonies in the chorus. Damn.
I'm 42. I got Automatic for the People when I was 14 and had forgotten about this song until now. I can't stop listening to it. One of the most beautiful REM tracks.
I never knew what this song was about. I have struggled with depression since my teens. Now I have two children who I adore. Things do get better and circumstances always change. It's worth holding on. Keep searching until you find your river y'all xxx
Beautiful song. I too had forgotten about this song. This song is as good as it gets.
I started to smile when reading your post:) I am 42, have three boys and was 14 when I got Automatic for the People casette.
Im 16 right now and I just discovered this masterpiece
@@J0NA5_07I'm 9.
This is why backing vocals are sometimes more important than you think they are. I love REM and Michael Stipe - but Mike Mills's backing vox and piano esque way of playing the bass is why REM are legendary x
I declare that Michael Mills is the best backup vocalist in the history of rock music
he write the song
I declare that you are correct.
I can not and will not argue with that logic
probably accurate
I have to agree, Millsey sits comfortably in that conversation. His voice and counter-melodies are a unique aspect of their brilliance.
One of the greatest songs ever
"Nothing is going my way", that is sure to say. After bad luck over the years I am 52 now, still alive after several attempts to get rid of my miserable life and listening to R.E.M. comforting my recent relaxed life style because I am fed up by family and so called friends who've fucked up my life. I find peace in this soothing, beautiful music and thank R.E.M. for making a smile on my face every time I hear their music.
I'm 41, and this song has kept giving me chills since it came out. It's much more subtle than everybody hurts.
This song saved me tonight! Hugs to you!
@@clairenixon8097 Bless you! Many hugs to you!
Jesus would make a way, find him and believe in him. I love the calmness of this song too.
@@peterimo8530 You're so right, it's comforting by it's calmness, something we need more nowadays...
I know R.E.M. from 1984. Have all their records, bought them in "real time", and I here declare - Best song of this best ever band.
+Eiran Shoshani have to disagree - I know them since 1987 of course bought all cd's best ever band I agree but they have many - man on the moon, voice of Harold, begin the begin,
+Márton Szigeti Which is a good sign, really. You don't have to have a favourite and even if you do that doesn't mean you can't love (rather than 'merely' like) a lot of their other songs.
When I listen to R.E.M. I usually look for one song that tugs at my mind but then listen others as well and go "Oh, yes his one is good too! And this one, and this one!"
In my opinion R.E.M. made lots of great songs and even though I have a favourite in name which, in spirit it depends on what I feel and then a song comes up I may not have listened in a long time that fits.
+yiannis clerides voice of harold.... Did you raely wrote it ????
it denpends on your mood
Maps & Legends, Wolves Lower, Perfect Circle :)
Perfection. It's tragic so many don't know and will never know this song. Those of us that do are truly blessed.
Your last word is the truest ... this is among the ways in which the Holy Spirit works.
Inspiring wondrous works of music.
Takes nothing away from the human genius ... but to be elevated in this way is the greatest privilege this world can offer.
Some realise that that is what has happened to them, some don't,
My task to try and make it clear.
Most people don't (seem to) take any notice whatsoever, as Paul would suggest in Corinthians.
But I try.
Even as a sinner myself, I try.
I love the Holy Spirit and His works....
If u hear the whole album and not share a tear, in the end of it this song will emotionally break u up. If not, you havent got a heart.
yes and i thought i was the only one..the piano lyrics and medley and video
Just listened to it for the umteenth time in my life and I am now.
One of the greatest album-closing songs ever. 30 years later it brings tears to my eyes thinking about how amazing that album was.
Hey now, little speedyhead
The read on the speed-meter says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve
Don't be shy, you're just dessert
Is only just light years to go
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon
I have got to leave to find my way
Watch the road and memorize
This life that passed before my eyes
And nothing is going my way
The ocean is the river's goal
A need to leave the water knows
We're closer now than light years to go
I have got to find the river
Bergamot and vetiver
Run through my head and fall away
Leave the road and memorize
This life that passed before my eyes
And nothing is going my way
There's no one left to take the lead
But I tell you and you can see
We're closer now than light years to go
Pick up here and chase the ride
The river empties to the tide
Fall into the ocean
The river to the ocean goes
A fortune for the undertow
None of this is going my way
There is nothing left to throw
Of ginger, lemon, indigo
Coriander stem and rose of hay
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
Of river poet search naiveté
Pick up here and chase the ride
The river empties to the tide
All of this is coming your way
How gorgeous is this song. Have the great distinction of having Michael Stipe sing this while looking at me for about 4 seconds at a concert when I was in the front row. Was on a high for a week.
That’s so cool! I miss seeing them
live! Michael is a sweetheart, last saw him in Amsterdam in 08.
Big smile!!!
So jealous! I've been in love with him for so long, and him with me in my dreams.
Cool, they didn't play this frequently live.
The trilogy of songs: "Man on the Moon", "Night Swimming" and "Find the River" aren't just the pinnacle of this band's creative genius, but possibly of the entire alternative movement. No album ever ended better than Automatic, Sgt. Pepper's not withstanding, and no record so encapsulated the depth and breadth of the alternative movement quite like Automatic did. In every conceivable sense it was a masterpiece, and I can think of no better coda than this song.
It is how Michael came out of the closet - seriously
I think you nailed down the description I've been searching for since this album dropped in 1992. I was in high school and it landed at a critical time in my life. If you're well over 40 like me, we were fortunate to have had this in our lives.
Automatic shits on Sgt. Pepper's.
I'm so glad that others share this opinion, the end of Automatic always struck as the best ending to an Album ever
TackleberryFife I couldn’t agree more. Sublime

I never understood poetry except through music, and this song is my favourite poem of all time..
“there is nothing left to grow, ginger, lemon, indigo,

Automatic for the people, the whole album is a great piece of art.
Yes, it is.
Has certainly stood the test of time.
I may love metal, but Automatic for the People has some truly beautiful songs-this being one of them. Just such a gorgeous tune and it always brings tears to my eyes. Just beautiful.
Backing vocals, unbelieveble harmonies, piano... Mike Mills...
and the composer ok
Alway that I hear this song I just want to sing those backing vocals, yes Mike is a genius
Y nada menos que John Paul Jones como productor
As a normal everyday person who is sadly dying of Pancreatic cancer I have chosen this song as my first choice for my funeral because its beautiful and sums up life perfectly, we get older and succumb to the inevitable.
Hopefully you aren’t suffering too much. Glad this song gives you comfort.
Sorry man.
God bless you. 🙏❤️
So sorry ,,my brother had this played at his funeral he also passed with pancreatic cancer at 46yrs what a horrible cruel disease
Sweetness Follows
I'm a 63 year old rocker, but I am not ashamed to say that this song touches my very soul
Fucking,a dude 👍👍
I totally agree
Yes
oh,hell yes from another old rocker REM timeless...
Why should you be ashamed?
This song heals any pain
Amen

my brother passed away last September 19 at the age of 61. This weekend, my sisters and i will scatter his cremated remains in California, where he was born and raised, at the places dear to his heart. I will be playing this great song, among others, in remembrance of Jim. 😥💔🙏
I remember when I was a foolish loved up teenager, I had just found out my girlfriend at the time had been seeing someone behind my back. I quietly finished my dinner, went up to my room, shut the door, put this song on and the second I heard that intro guitar I starting bawling my eyes out into a pillow. I think I had it on repeat for a few plays whilst I cried into that pillow. It really helped me get out that initial shocked emotion, we broke up, I thought I'd never love again but of course we keep going and life goes on. I find that with REM in general actually, I use their music as a coping mechanism usually late at night when I need to have an emotional breakdown. I always feel more calm afterwards and can sit quietly and vibe to their music afterwards. It's why I think the band means so much to me. They've saved my life on so many occasions
This is my favourite R.E.M. song.
i can certainly see why
Daniel Lind ",
ditto. a soundtrack for life.
I know automatics for the people is clearly the best album in the world, full of songs like this one and they are matched in a perfect harmony, I'd say this is my favorite song from them too but there is sweetness fallows and many more songs that are maybe just as good or maybe even more beautiful
Daniel Lind Good for you, so you got a shitty taste in music, what do you want a cookie?
This song is just brilliant. It stands alone as a really poignant poem.
To me its such a perfect end to this album which sort of closed the chapter on the REM of the 80's (and very early 90's) the original band, 4 college kids that loved underground music. Somehow a very unique band in so many ways. I feel like everything they had done was leading to this song.
Automatic for the People is possibly the greatest album ever made.
It is an extremely therapeutic album
Agree.
Totally agree. Helping me so much tonight.
Really is a solid album just beautiful music!
Bettered by Monster in my opinion. Went down hill with Up and retired soon after.
The amount of rem songs that intertwine into your life still astounds me. I am 42 years old, been to their concerts in the uk in my early 20s had spells of not really listening to their music especially after they broke up but recently reconnecting with all these amazing songs, such a class act from their beginning to the end. Timeless classics.
I miss you guys 😢
When this song played in 13 reasons why when tyler revealed the pictures of all the people who helped him with his trauma, it just moved me and brought me to tears. I know i need to find this song so here i am now.
same. and what a great Trevor moment.
Same
Same it was very moving especially how far Tyler had progressed with his life.
The world ended when I heard this song for the first time, because nothing more beautiful could ever exist. This is the apex of human achievement, and I am thankful to God that I lived when it was released.
I like that comment, but we are indeed thankful to God, and to the Holy Spirit, for this is not solely a human achievement ... it is what human genius can do when the Holy Spirit raises it. And even if we think nothing better can ever come along through such beautiful collaboration, the Holy Spirit is beloved, enigmatic and active enough to surprise us. Even in the awful 2020s.
I thought that divine songs of this calibre had really ended the series with "Somewhere only we know" by Keane (2004). But then - thanks to the divinely-inspired movie "Don't look up", we got "Second Nature" by Bon Iver - a stunningly intricate work which often manages triple or quadruple meanings in each line...
(see: czcams.com/video/YrVxcQp0SR0/video.html)
2020 also saw "Love Shine a Light" from Katrina and the Waves revamped for the Eurovision Song Contest, which did not take place thanks to COVID. Of course, lyric-wise that is way down from the above, but in terms of melody and performance it is stunning - czcams.com/video/R_xmJcg1iBU/video.html.
An utter contrast from this year's Contest which the darkness had grabbed by its neck.
I listened to automatic for the people for almost a year after my dad died. This album (in my humble opion) is truly a work of art.
When Automatic for the People came out I was 17. Was starting to develop my taste for music from all over the world, A few friends and me agreed how every track in the album was incredibly outstanding, and when it came to this number we just kept quiet and just appreciated it while puffing a cigarrete. Such was the magic in this number and still is. 30 years on, I have grown into a middle-aged man; didn't quite become the successful man I wanted to be back then, many things have got screwed up, and a few regrets also. But I can atleast give the credit to my younger version in having appreciated great music back then, that I am still listening to and enjoying thoroughly with a few tears in my eyes...
It's their under-played classic. Beautiful.
bennymutant i totally agree!!!! One of their best in my opinion
I played this for my mother around 1996 she was struggling, she started to cry uncontrollably I was stunned
Been listening to R.E.M. a lot recently and just love this song. I feel it’s the most beautiful and most nostalgic song ever written. 💜🙏🏻

I am never able to hold it together at "I have got to find the river"
I'm 20 and trying to figure out where I'm going with my life. It's been a long hard journey so far and I still have so far to go. My parents have divorced, I've been fighting off depression and I have tried so many times to figure out just who I am and where I belong in this world. This song really does speak to me. It gives me hope that someday I will find that river. In some ways I already have and the river came in the form of a very special lady that came into my life recently. She understands me and we relate so well. You'll probably never see this hun but thanks for being there for me. I may not have found the river yet but I'm glad you're here to help me seek it. : )
No man, find the river in yourself. ;)
Evan Jones I'm on the same, i don't know my place in this world and i dont have any woman with me.
Evan Jones Fucking hell, I could have left this comment. I just turned 21 a few days ago and music and the love of my girlfriend have been the best cures for getting me through my own depression and anxieties. The future seems so much brighter now!
Good luck on your own journey. :)
Life is a journey mat , so hard for all the shit in life , not to become a state of mind , look beyond this current shit , not easy it's a discipline but try slam the doors on the negatives behind you and open others , don't let a frame of mind burden your life Don't feel guilty to say fk it .if this life is ever going to give you or anyone a bashing GET IT for something n cum out the other side x
Hey there little sleepy head! I'm nearly 52. Been there got through it! Hope you're still with us and feeling better. You got stuck in a moment.. and you can't get out of it? It will pass. You belong in this world and have a right to be in this world because you ARE. Been through all of the shite. That is life. You will get through and be a lot stronger for it. You either swim or you drown..
If Bob Dylan won a well-deserved Nobel prize, I think that Michael Stipe should, at least, be considered also.
The power of music to move us is beyond words.
IMHO, music can carry good or evil, but beauty, love and truth in music is a property of the Holy Spirit - His inspiration of genius in the direction of transcendence is the recognition of the wonder and meaning and tenderness to which we are granted access even in this fairly rotten and pretty evil world.
This song will be played at my husband's funeral as his centrepiece, this being his favourite band and song. Having saw REM at Murrayfield, Glasgow, Stirling,Perthshire,Balloch and Dublin with my hubby I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every moment. Thank you Mike and the guys Ax
For anyone who is stunned by the beauty of rivers and the nature that surrounds them on their journey, this stunning song is pure magic. Best REM song, for me.
the best end to any album ever
This song can always put tears in my eyes and I can never explain why. It just hits me on a level that I'm not even conscious of...something deep underneath in places where perhaps I don't want to explore or know about
I understand 100%, does the same to me.
Its harmonies under Michael Stipes vocals are just sublime
This is my absolute favorite song ever.
you have good taste
My mum and dad loved this song r I p mum and dad it is a lovely song regards Michael ❤
Seeing a lot of (well-deserved) praise for Mike Mills’s backing vocal, but I also want to note Bill Berry’s vocal part (which is probably best heard here: 0:53), and how great an example it is of his subtle genius.
Bill was the perfect drummer for R.E.M.: minimalist but driving, and laser-sharp. He was a real champion of the “best drummer is the one you don’t notice” philosophy, and that carried over to his vocals. You have to listen a little closer to even notice them, but once you do, you realize the song would be so much lesser without them.
We’ll observed. 🙏
You are absolutely correct! I have loved this song since it’s release and never picked up Bill’s vocal part until you pointed it out and it has changed how I hear it now. Thank you!
REM is fantastic! They cut deep.
A fine observation Peter, Bill's input was sorely missed after he retired.
Mike Mills' harmonies are fuckin' awesome!
Bill Berry sings the low harmonies. Supposedly they did both their parts separately and it came together perfect.
REM is one of my TOP 5 Bands of all time. First CD I ever owned Automatic for the people! Great Band........
It was the last cassette I ever bought!
Very young Michael with that great voice already❤. This song gives shivers evrytime I watch that video. Still same crush at 75 on you Michael❤❤
Words can't describe how beautiful this song is.
I loved every minute of loving rem. my friends didn't like them as much as me and it always made me feel sad.
If everyone opened their eyes there would be only one band standing!
David Forster agreed
Indeed my friend Indeed 🤗
Their body of work is just astounding. SO brilliant. My top 3 bands.
I know the feeling
I'm 46, R.E.M got me through many hard times in my life. And is still the best band in history. I am teaching my 17 year old all the songs and they're meanings. They're songs, music, poetry are the soundtrack to my life and give me strength.
Just exquisite. At their most beautiful.
Were they reading bad poetry into their machine??
Well said and the other song you referenced is very good as well.
I listen, and watch the video.
This is the best representation of my relationship with my children (dogs) and the moments with them. I’ve been blessed with them.
Two. When I retire my second will be seven, I hate that I will outlive my children.
One of the best songs ever written
We all have our tracks that we hold special, but this one makes me feel so at peace with the chaotic world around us and I can’t connect with other songs the way I do with this classic from REM. Timeless
Such a lyrically strong yet somehow emotionally soothing song. I had a great old friend who, from early youth, not only taught me "everything" I now know about "Fly Tying" & "Fly Fishing"...which lakes & rivers to spend endless hours & weekends, casting, almost shoulder to shoulder, in fine.humour, hoping to hoodwink nature above & below the water. He was "my own" highly respected Attenborough like mentor, who taught me "everything" I could ever hope to know about all that happens around favourite waters in the fishing season & how to tie the imitation flies, during Winter times.Unfortunately, he eventually succumbed & gradually passed away a couple of decades ago with Alzheimer's Disease. I, for a while, vehemently cursed how that, seemingly random affliction, could rob someone so gentle & knowledgeable of nature & sheer zest for the Outdoor life & his willingness to share all of that knowledge & verve. As the years now roll past me, I've mellowed & occasionally, just break a smile when, while out fishing, I still make the daft mistake, I can almost hear him chuckle or chastise me for making some silly Fauxpas. Rest Well My Old Friend......but if you can influence beyond the grave...then guide a decent sized trout or salmon my way, just for bragging rites.!!! Miss you Old Man.!!!!
My heart 💜
One of the greatest album closers of all time.
This song brings back strong memories and emotions for me from back in 1993. It was difficult time in my life, but i bought Automatic for the people and that album and particularly this song made getting through it easier. The whole album is a thing of beauty.
IMO one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Love the message in the video.
Thee best song ever written- EVER!!!!
This song made me fall in love with REM and especially Michael's beautiful voice! Been lucky enough to meet them heaps of times and had drinks with them backstage, miss them a lot! A very sad day when REM announced their retirement
'I have got to leap and find my way'.. those words helped me get through some tough times during my youth - the song says, no matter how life is treating you, you will find your way.. because each one of us has a different journey in life - River to the ocean. Forever beautiful and grateful for this song and their music.
No one understands why this song makes me cry more than Everybody Hurts (I don't either, to be honest) - I don't think I've ever listened to this song without getting teary or choking up just a little bit, which is one of the many reasons why R.E.M. is my favourite band.
It is a gift made heirloom. For me personally, I miss you Michael with your voice and the sound and songs of R.E.M
my heart explodes with love for this song, a perfect ending to a perfect album
Agreed 💯. I found this song when I was 16, am 47 now and still the love of my life
I absolutely love this song, it means so much to me
this song can bring tears to my eyes
I'm crying.
I hear you. So calm and beautiful
It actually does for me too...13 Reasons Why, right after Tyler shows off his exhibit. I felt so happy for him at that moment.
Up there with the best tunes ever written!!
Seriously, how brilliant is this song?!
Best song of "Automatic for the People".

Find yourself. Find inner peace. Find strength by yourself in this pandemic, or anything this traumatic life may throw at you. I’ve seen everything. No Fear but Fear itself 💪😎
Thank you.
Haven't heard this song in about 5 years and still knew every damn line. That's a song.
You don't listen to R.E.M. to this day? Poor thing.
@@matthewstetson711 People move on. You always search for negativity? Poor thing
I have cried to this one, I have laughed to this song, I have talked to friends to this one, I have lived my teen years to this one. I love really love this song. The melody is so beautiful, his voice, the lyrics, a master peace, thank you R.E.M ❤❤
Me too ❤
You and me both mate. I'm from England and I'm 73 - 2023.

What a way to end an album, perfect!
aaa
Yes yes yes. It's a beautiful album. This song is perfect, specially after Nightswimming. This one and Sweetness Follows have something special
I can't think of a better example of a band making it big and same time releasing a fantastic album while keeping to their high standards. It's certainly different from their earlier material but they didn't sell out. Wouldn't, couldn't...
Def one of the best songs and albums ever
LimeC exactly
Great band, great song. Goosebumps all over. You don't hear songs like this anymore.
I feel like this deserves the largest mic drop ever , because really, try top this.
For me I feel lucky re REM. When I first heard just a chorus or two of RADIO FREE EUROPE over a week's worth of listening to the only station playing COLLEGE ROCK circa 1983/84 I attempted to get the TOWER RECORDS clerk to ID the song so I could buy it. Many many years later after seeing them play over a dozen times on several continents it is this song that still reverberates the deepest. To be alive and to have gone on this ride with REM is time I hold close to the heart. In a sense I grew up with them and learned that life's palate is full of many mysteries and many wonders. And indeed "All of this is coming your way". It IS all good.
Find the River means a lot to me, perhaps my favorite REM song. Listening to it in tough times would always give me hope and help to cheer me up. That being said, I also love it any other time when I am not sad :D
IMHO the most beautiful song they ever wrote. Dylan himself would be proud if this were his own work.
It's too beautiful for Dylan to have written it.
A beautiful snapshot in time of the band at their absolute career peak. Stipe's vocals are close to perfection and Millsey is beautiful as always on harmony.
This is probably my favorite R.E.M. song of all time. Mike Mills' haunting voice in the background and the little piano riff toward the end give me chills every time.
Я безмерно влюблена в R.E.M., я безмерно влюблена в эту песню. В тяжёлый период жизни эта группа - единственное, что сохраняет меня. Это буквально дает мне силы существовать. Особенно Automatic For The People. Легендарный альбом.
В ближайшем будущем у меня появятся первые виниловые пластинки этого и пары других альбомов, а на руке навечно замрут строки из этой песни. Просто спасибо, сотни тысяч спасибо. Вы навсегда в моем сердце.
My favourite REM song. Wonderful in every way.
Mine too
Fabolous piece of music.
My favorite REM song!
