    In the areas where I didn’t use cardboard last year when extending my flower bed, I have had to pull weeds and grass already! In the new flowerbed where I placed cardboard then mulch chips over it, I have just a few weeds come up, but nowhere near what I’d have if I hadn’t have used cardboard. I’m going to extend another area and will be using the contractors paper. Cardboard and paper work for me!👏👍

    Cardboard or contractors paper and wood chips absolutely does work! All of my beds (and I have a lot of gardens) have been created this way! So excited to see all of the progress coming this spring with the roses, pumpkin patch, and even your adorable porch swing!

    They say you get a peach crop once every 7 years unless you plant them really strategically or have an ideal micro climate. I work at a local orchard. Last year we lost all but a few peaches but then orchards half an hour from us had peaches. It’s really hit or miss deal.
    I love the idea of Collette climbing on your swing set. Swings are such a great thing for kids… I have fond memories of a tree swing in my childhood backyard.

    Thank you for showing your trees! I love seeing the flowers but I also enjoy seeing the progress of your trees/shrubs. Love your swing set, glad you kept it! When I grew out of my swing set as a child, my mom put a porch swing on it and we enjoyed it for many years, brings back wonderful memories 💖

    I'm trying to convince my 71 yr old husband that we need a swingset. A real one, heavy duty and tall, like yours. It's got to be good exercise, cranking those legs to get really high up! He thinks I'm nuts! I know for certain, no flowers that bees or Japanese beetles love, would be growing near my swings! 😂
    Love seeing your new garden budding out for Spring!!

    I love the idea of a 6 foot privacy border of shrubs and evergreens around the pool on the outer side of fence! My back yard has 6 ft stockade and I’ve planted my mixed evergreen on the inside of my fence. Not on all sides. It’s been there since 2003. Soo tall, so mixed and varied, and I love it. I’m actually limbing up some things and creating little paths and secret seating areas inside it now. It’s pretty to sit between cedars, holly, and 20 foot tall bloom covered camellias in 3 different shades of pink, walking on soft mulch paths. Birds will come soo close if you’re very still. It’s a reprieve from the full sun around the pool.

    Hey, Matthew. I’m so glad you’re keeping the swing. Each time I see it, I picture swings there. I have the gray polywood swing, and we love it. It stays out year round. A bucket of warm soapy water, a scrub brush, and the hose perks it up in a matter of minutes each spring, I got so tired of repainting outdoor furniture. We’ve replaced our rockers, porch table, benches and all. It is an investment and we did it over several years. Everything is looking great!

    We planted several magnolias trees out on our property two years ago and I was so looking forward to their blooms this year, they all budded up well. And now we’re getting all of these cold freezes this week. We tried to wrap some in freeze fabric, but the wind was so fierce. It was just damaging the trees so we left it off. Let mother nature have her way.😞

    Hi Matthew! The daffodils and crocus are so pretty. I checked out the Bonfire Peach tree on Fast Growing Trees site and they said: unavailable because of agricultural restrictions in your state of Idaho. Another site didn't mention this, but said they are better for preserves because the fruit is small and "rubbery". I hope it does well for you, and I'm looking forward to your review on the taste, etc. I'm glad you're keeping the swing set, and like your plans for adding a porch type swing. The 6' shrub hedge behind the fence will be so pretty. Adding a hoop house will be nice. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Hi Mathew,
    Just remember to thin your peaches as they tend to rot if touching, also the branches can snap with the heaviness of fruit.(happened to me)
    My dwarf peach and nectarines are in the soil and dont grow any bigger than 6 foot high and 5 -6 foot wide. If you do want to plant fruit trees in the ground, a protective spot near your brick house would be an awesome place and you can always wrap them with a protective cloth, if you do have a frost.
    Lovely sky at your place today.😊Jo from New Zealand
    Gypsum powder is great to amend clay soil with added compost too.

  • @bbuchanan5235
    @bbuchanan5235 Před 5 měsíci

    Love the idea of garden beds on the backside of your wrought iron fence. You said 6’ deep - maybe consider deeper? Like 8’ or 10’ deep? You have so much land and deep garden beds give you so much greater flexibility. Whatever you do will be great though.
    About cardboard mulching. Boy, people are stridently against it where I live (northern Nevada, east of Tahoe.) Militant! What is this, a nationwide fad? Regardless, I have had good results doing it and I will keep sheet mulching with cardboard! It has been beneficial for my sandy desert soil. The plants love it and it keeps down puncturevine and tumbleweeds.

      I don’t currently have a way to get water over there and there are numerous utilities that run from the road and enter that side of the house that impair the ability to dig over there without calling 811 regularly. Until the pine is removed and the driveway to the barn rerouted, I’m not planning anything on that side of the driveway.

    Happy with what you are doing with the swing set!!! I always look forward to your videos. I'm getting ready to try drip irrigation for the first time. I don't totally understand it but I'm tired of watering every day in the summer. I understand laying the main hose and around shrubs, etc., but what do you do when you have a group of plants planted close together? I ordered limelight prime because if you are planting them, I want them in my yard also.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I have several videos on drip irrigation on the channel you can search and likely find what you need, including some very detailed ones about specific parts. Groupings of plants can usually be addressed with emitter tubing that has pre-installed emitters every so many inches. Those are available in all sorts of spacing including 6 inches to I believe 24 inches.
