I remember seeing the original Surfcaster back in the day, and it was like nothing else on the market, and it ticked all my boxes. As soon as you saw it, you knew what type of music you wanted to play on it. Even the name totally summed up the instrument. I tried it out and was not disappointed, but didn't have the available funds to pull the trigger. Its great to see that it is still around - slightly redesigned - and still sounding great. What a demo !!!!!!!

I grew up listening to my sister's Dick Dale records. As a drummer, surf instrumental music and rockabilly is a blast to play. Lead, rhythm, bass and drums; that's all you need! Great demo! Tanks for posting.
I love the way he shows his hands as he plays all those great riffs; makes me think I understand what he's doing, even though I'm far from being able to do it. Great sounds from great fingers on great guitars. Through great amplifiers.

Jackson owned Charvel when these were originally launched and as they were made in Japan, they were sold as Charvels. Jackson later moved the Surfcaster to its own brand and, importantly, changed the headstock design. Fender bought Jackson in 2002 and presumably still owns the rights to "Surfcaster". There is a much bigger problem though and it is to do with the original design. Charvel borrowed from multiple sources to create the design and was influenced by Rickenbacker for the slashed fin soundhole and the headstock. Rickenbacker, certainly in Europe, have trademarked the headstock design. In 2008, GRB launched the Kokocaster with an identical headstock. Rickenbacker had their trademark granted for this design in 2012, which is when GRB ceased production. The Eastman headstock looks to be slightly different than the original but as the tuning pegs are sightly offset to one another it would be 50/50 if the design is infringing or not. The owner of Rickenbacker, John Hall*, is extremely litigious and protects his IP with a vengeance. As there is a market for original Surfcasters, if Fender could make them, they would rather than making the Skatecasters, which are quite frankly god awful. *Disclaimer : I'm no fan of John Hall - I own 70s/early 80s Japanese Rick copies which he makes difficult to buy and sell in Europe despite only buying the firm in 1984...
I actually like the Skatecasters, if I needed a "metal" guitar and found one cheap I'd probably buy it. The satin mahogany necks on the new Charvels aren't half bad especially for all the import guitars on the market these days. If you can find them, Kustom made a mean Rick copy back in the day. I played one at a shop in Nashville, they're pretty cool. so lucky for us Eastwood is making their take on that soon lol

That's not out of phase in the sense of tone, the fact the windings and magnets are reversed actually puts the signal for the strings in phase. The only well known guitar that I'm aware of that does out of phase tones stock is the Mustang.
+Jaune Attend the song is called "Mr Moto" and the version I have is from The Belairs (a Chevrolet trim level) in 1961. The original has the guitar, but also sax and piano (surf piano?).
