  • Onyeka Okongwu is a 6'8 Center for the Atlanta Hawks set to enter his third year in what may very likely be a breakout 2022-2023 season. Possessing an agility rarely seen by big men, combined with great offensive touch and defensive instincts, Okongwu has the potential to be a high impact two-way player. Despite rising to dominance quickly at prior levels in his career, Okongwu's NBA career has required patience as he waits for the opportunity to display the full extent of his talent.
What makes Okongwu such a unique and ideal big man in the modern NBA? And what exactly needs to happen for Okongwu to have a breakout season and come closer to reaching his full potential?

Love Big O. I love his personality as well. I think the hawks are working with his 3’s to spread the floor more. He is undersized for a center, and need to improve boxing out skills to be a better rebounder. But he is good at spacing and high defensive IQ. He would be a great PF rather than a center. Hope he can get a starting position soon.

Great points. I think I prefer to see him at the 5 because that’s where his mobility and athleticism creates such an advantage compared to opposing centers. The defensive rebounding is the biggest concern no doubt. Big year ahead for him

@@eye4impactnba572 I agree on his athleticism and his potential. Lou really saw his potential early and help groom him offensively. Now a days where teams are playing more positionless basketball, I can he Big O playing starting center. As much as I like Capela, his presence in paint seemed to limit Collins attacking the basket, as well as Collins 2nd chance point near the basket. Then again, Capela is much better defensive anchor in the paint. I think Big O and Collins (slightly taller than Big O) can be a good fit on the paper, Big O can space the floor which can give more room for Collins to attack the basket and grab rebounds more, while Big O can provide both post and perimeter defense, which Collins needs improvement in…. With more set of defenders who can pass in the roster both Big O and JC should be able to get their points. Not worried about Collins. He should be able to do 18- 20 ppg with Trae and Murray. If he can improve defense, he can even be an all star player, which I think can happen. I really think this is the year both Big O and Hunter need to step up big by staying healthy and show more consistency…

He's also been injured a lot. He was injured when the Hawks drafted him. Like DeAndre hunter, amazing when healthy. Just needs to stay on the court. The best ability is availability.

Okongwu is the the most underrated Hawks player imo. Love Capela, but agreed that it's only a matter of time before he's the starting center. My pick for breakout player in the league provided given minutes from HC Nate McMillan. He doesn't need to be Bam, like the comparisons. He possibly could be better defensively in time. And his offense will come along too. When "we" made the pick I was a little confused but not anymore. Teams noticed him around the league before we finally got Dejoute Murray. Even the Spurs wanted the big man as a young piece. If he develops a jump shot from 15 or further, watch out.
And not just saying this as a Hawks fan. 🏀💯🏀

Great video. I always thought he should have been taken before Wiseman.

I agree. He's DEF a better player. Wiseman just has a height and length advantage over him. nothing else.

Double O is so so so underrated I knew since the draft that he was going to be a monster. This guy is so good and likeable he's my favorite player in the NBA. I'm sure I'm the only one that says this but it's true I believe he's going to be a legend. He's silky smooth at the rim and he can smother top big men. Much love to Capella but as with all things it's time for a new Era to begin.

Hold your horses potna Capela has the spot for a couple more years. Due to us getting a major playmaker in Murray thats another pick and roll Maestro for Capella and JC to get more touches and points. Unless... they get hurt really bad and can't bounce back. I like Wuskii as a PF but JC just got big bucks and isn't going anywhere either.

I’ll take the under on 2 years lol! But yeah we will see. I think okongwu is too good to have as a reserve for that long. One way or another, he’ll be a starter.
