These Players are SLEEPERS to Win Each Major NBA Award!
For one reason or another, there are always a few players for each major award category that have a much better chance to take home the award than their Vegas odds would indicate. Most of the awards have arbitrary criteria that is best understood looking at past winners to try and understand how the media select and what historical trends could come into play going forward. In this video I’m going to select one sleeper for each 2022-2023 regular season award that has a realistic shot of bringing home the trophy.
Which of these sleepers do you think is most likely to take home an award?

Despite rising to dominance quickly at prior levels in his career, Okongwu's NBA career has...

Jalen Brunson is The Most Underrated PG in the NBA

Jalen Brunson is a 4th year guard for the Dallas Mavericks and what he lacks in size and physical tools he more than makes up for in skill. Uncovering the NBA's Biggest Blind Spot

The NBA's thirst for stardom has its consequences and those mainly affected are the casual NBA fans who are left interpreting the game and its players based on box scores and highlights. There is a blind spot toward non-star players that causes us to disregard 90% of the players on the floor. How do we regain our ability to see impact regardless of a player's name or their box score stats? Twit...

    This is why jb and luka works but ky and luka don't.. jb and luka has almost the same style of game, slow but efficient unlike ky having fast paced explosive athleticism.. having guards with different style will really be hard to synchronize

      JB and Luka “worked” but it came at the expense of Brunson’s growth as a player since he was the one that sacrificed his on ball strengths to accommodate Luka. Concluding that Luka and Kyrie didn’t work bc of a couple months is silly and I’d argue that contrasting offensive styles can actually make for a better pairing vs having overlapping strengths

    Double O is so so so underrated I knew since the draft that he was going to be a monster. This guy is so good and likeable he's my favorite player in the NBA. I'm sure I'm the only one that says this but it's true I believe he's going to be a legend. He's silky smooth at the rim and he can smother top big men. Much love to Capella but as with all things it's time for a new Era to begin.

  • @thej1615

    Kevon Looney is 6’8. At like 6’7 Draymond also plays “center.” Kevon in the lineup is still a small ball center essentially. And If the warriors had 2-3 Draymonds, they’d win more easily with no one on the court above 6’7

    • @eye4impactnba572
      @eye4impactnba572 Před rokem

      Hmm… I wouldn’t consider any lineup with looney as a small ball lineup. It’s as much about the way he plays as it is the height. Just like there are players taller than looney who wouldn’t be considered centers or “bigs”. In the sense of traditional positions, looneys style definitely puts him in the category of a traditional big man, regardless if he is two inches shorter than the average center

    Something that I don't hear a lot about with his game is that he seems to purposefully avoid certain moves, because they have a lower rate of success and are more likely to lead to turnovers. For example, he opts for quick-shifting high post-ups instead of attempting crossovers out near the line. He also likes to dribble out there and fake the hand-off with a head fake and speed change then cut hard to the basket. Another alternative he goes to off the catch is an extremely tight jab-step and drive that almost always leads to him beating his defender. Other players could learn something from Brunson's urgency on the court *cough* Tatum *cough*. Brunson is even doing complex things like having the other team's help defender act like a screener by running his man into the help and cutting around them. He'll often use this to throw off the play, because the help defender obscures his man's vision and the paint protector will usually still be on the weak side, because they also don't have clear line of sight on the ball handler--it's an extremely effective an underutilized play. Since he doesn't have the size and athleticism to then dunk all over the help, he'll usually do a quick high-percentage off-balance finger roll (which often leads to an AND1), do a back cut and some fancy step-through, or do a footwork fade-away. He's also really good at using his body to cut off trailing defenders and will often do clever speed changes to prevent getting blocked--his shiftiness is problematic for a defense. The wildest thing is he has the discipline to not pick up his handle through most plays while multiple defenders are in near proximity and rarely has to get bailed out. If Brunson was even 4 inches taller with the same skillset, he'd be MVP caliber because of all the things he can bring on the floor offensively for a team. It will be interesting to see how teams will defend him when he's the guy.

  • @lxnny2357
    @lxnny2357 Před 2 lety

    Brunson is extremely underrated: (1) His basketball IQ is extremely high (2) He can take a shot from anywhere on the floor (3) He has extremely tight handles and even avoids going to certain flashier moves that are more likely to lead to turnovers (e.g. crossovers) (4) His high-post-up, which I'd argue is his signature move, is nearly un-guardable, because he has so many options out of that position--you can't reach in, because he'll punish you with a quick direction shift (5) His post play is elite (6) His off balance shots are extremely consistent

    • @eye4impactnba572
      @eye4impactnba572 Před 2 lety

      He’s an absolute stud. The world is going to understand next season now that he’s front and center in the biggest market in the country. He’s been elite at every level and they always try to put a ceiling on him despite constant improvement. It’s a shame people don’t appreciate his game more because, as you listed, everything he does on the court is at such a ridiculously high skill and IQ level

    Hold your horses potna Capela has the spot for a couple more years. Due to us getting a major playmaker in Murray thats another pick and roll Maestro for Capella and JC to get more touches and points. Unless... they get hurt really bad and can't bounce back. I like Wuskii as a PF but JC just got big bucks and isn't going anywhere either.

    Okongwu is the the most underrated Hawks player imo. Love Capela, but agreed that it's only a matter of time before he's the starting center. My pick for breakout player in the league provided given minutes from HC Nate McMillan. He doesn't need to be Bam, like the comparisons. He possibly could be better defensively in time. And his offense will come along too. When "we" made the pick I was a little confused but not anymore. Teams noticed him around the league before we finally got Dejoute Murray. Even the Spurs wanted the big man as a young piece. If he develops a jump shot from 15 or further, watch out. And not just saying this as a Hawks fan. 🏀💯🏀

    Love Big O. I love his personality as well. I think the hawks are working with his 3’s to spread the floor more. He is undersized for a center, and need to improve boxing out skills to be a better rebounder. But he is good at spacing and high defensive IQ. He would be a great PF rather than a center. Hope he can get a starting position soon.

    • @eye4impactnba572
      @eye4impactnba572 Před 2 lety

      Great points. I think I prefer to see him at the 5 because that’s where his mobility and athleticism creates such an advantage compared to opposing centers. The defensive rebounding is the biggest concern no doubt. Big year ahead for him

    • @seki0123
      @seki0123 Před 2 lety

      @@eye4impactnba572 I agree on his athleticism and his potential. Lou really saw his potential early and help groom him offensively. Now a days where teams are playing more positionless basketball, I can he Big O playing starting center. As much as I like Capela, his presence in paint seemed to limit Collins attacking the basket, as well as Collins 2nd chance point near the basket. Then again, Capela is much better defensive anchor in the paint. I think Big O and Collins (slightly taller than Big O) can be a good fit on the paper, Big O can space the floor which can give more room for Collins to attack the basket and grab rebounds more, while Big O can provide both post and perimeter defense, which Collins needs improvement in…. With more set of defenders who can pass in the roster both Big O and JC should be able to get their points. Not worried about Collins. He should be able to do 18- 20 ppg with Trae and Murray. If he can improve defense, he can even be an all star player, which I think can happen. I really think this is the year both Big O and Hunter need to step up big by staying healthy and show more consistency…
