Have you ever thought that the secret to harmonious style might not be colour, but... contrast? In this video I break down contrast for colour seasons, body types and essences and what to do if your features clash. Your contrast is how opposing your features are to each other, and is it the centre of many style systems.

This might be a sensitive question, but I've always wondered why darker skinned WOC are considered high contrast? If your skin, hair, and eyes are all the same dark color & tone, wouldn't that be low contrast in the same way having light hair, skin and eyes is?

I think I address this in the video when I talk about how very dark hair, skin and eyes is more bright than highly contrasted and therefore tends to suit high contrast. Some analysts argue that there is contrast with the white of the eyes also ♥️

Contrast is indicative of how much intensity one can handle with chosen colors, makeup and hair choices. Contrast is relative to depth of tonality, so think light gray vs. black or beige vs. dark brown. Usually the seasons mimic the depth a.k.a contrast.
For example, Storm Reid, Tyra Banks and Sofia Richie are all soft autumns! They don’t look the same season, at first glance. but the colors are the ones which suit them the best!
Gabrielle Union, Jasmine Tookes, Shay Mitchell and Frida Pinto are dark Autumn. They look the most harmonious in their colors.

@moriahw3947, I had the same question! Here's what I've come to so far (*before watching the video): As a darker-toned WOC, The general advice seemed to locate me in the Dark Winter ❄️ category, but I wanted to be sure I was making the right choice btwn that and Soft Summer (after all, I am pretty middle-the-road in terms of skin tone for my country of origin). I analyzed my selfies in black-and-white to see the level of contrast better, (as a website I found recommended). And I think I got it: even thought my skin and hair are darker-toned, my eyes and teeth pop against them -- hi-contrast! Also, I just did a common-sense check: How do I look in Soft Summer palettes? Ans: the light greyish pinks (especially as lipstick 😱) look a bit washed-out and lame on me. Vs the dark Winter natural-toned-to-deep-ruby lip looks fantastic on my skin. I think if we just pick our closest two, and see how they look IRL, it can clear up any doubt. Happy Color-Season-Finding! 🙌🏾🥳! (And it's a good question, glad someone asked so we can all talk further and share our findings! 😊)

I am not a pro stylist but i am a designer so working with colors have been my job for 20 years. The dark skinned lady on the thumbnail is low contrast for sure(hair lips skin tone very similar). This system was deffently made for lighter skin people which is fine(i do not think its rasict or whatever). People with medium to dark brown shold be aproached separatly on matters of contrast and maybe whole color system needs to be tweaked a bit(whole seasons and stuff). Best explored by someone who has dark skin perhaps... We are all different and it is okay.

This was so confusing for me!! I’m a woc, who has obvious contrast. But, there was an obvious softness that had me thinking Summer? Winter?
Lo and behold, I was a dark Autumn 🍂🍁 not much distinguishing difference between woc Autumns and Winters to look for. But contrast is the one thing we both share!

Sameeeeee. I'm pretty sure I'm a dark autumn but I'm completely lost on my face essence. My features are large and soft with medium contrast(which I only discovered bc of this vid) with a flamboyant gamine body. None of the descriptors feel right. I look like a baby so I would think ingenue, but my features are not small by any means lol

Im sorry, but this wasnt made by POC nor for POC. It's like they equate darkness with contrast no matter what. Dark skin people will always have contrast with eyes and teeth, but that's basically it. I would just follow my instincts and influencers with similar features. And personal style of course. I cant remember where I heard that the human eye prefer high contrasted things. For dark skin people creating contrast means lighter clothes and bright colors. A lipstick darker than your skin. And of course, theres also a look with little contrast, I think that looks whimsical, and a little otherworldly. That would be similar to a very white person wearing a very light pink dress, very unsaturated. Its a look

So interesting, thanks for all this. Some feedback for you Ellie...please ditch the background music, it's distracting and not necessary. Could you also please slow down your speaking, and hold the shots of your examples for a few more seconds so that we can absorb the point you're making. I know that you're trying to convey a lot of information, but I for one would prefer to ff/ skip sections ( with a slower delivery) than having to pause and re- wind. Hope that makes sense!

I know it's frustrating when videos are so fast you have to pause them to get all the info, but it's not Ellie's fault. CZcams's algorithm prioritises videos that get paused a lot, because it's a sign of interest. So youtubers are forced to make videos slightly too fast in order to make a living on here!

The low contrast of ethereal and soft summer put together got me to thinking. If ethereal is otherworldly or heavenly which can be kind of regal and soft summer is like a summer sunset then all of those faded dusky purples would be a perfect way to blend the looks. There's so many neat possibilities with all of this.

So cool and helpful that you went through seasons, body types, and essences. I get confused sometimes bc I am deep winter and get washed out easily (paleish skin darkish medium brown hair and eyes) in certain light colors. But I think I'm R or TR and possibly ingenue and romantic essence. Pure black really makes my hair skin and eyes shine bright. But when I wear light pink with little flowers I look fresh and healthy in a different way and changing into black kills the ingenue vibe. But does look v sexy 🤭 it's fun to experiment!

I'm a dark autumn with a soft classic body type (some romantic and dramatic essence as well). But I've found that leaning too far into softness or going too far towards soft autumn really looks bland on me. This video really helped me figure out why - I was missing contrast!

This really explains why I like the way pairing a light blue jeans with a black top looks on me. I think I‘m medium to high contrast, maybe even closer to high contrast than medium. I can wear all black but I like it the best when I pair black with a much brighter colour or white.
I‘m also most likely a winter type. And I always struggled to place my facial features because they seem sharp and soft to me. Plus my super curly hair adds some softness too.
For my body, I am petite but I also have more squarish shoulders, as someone recently pointed out (they said it runs in the family).
So overall, I seem to be quite on the higher contrast side.

  • @rachellepennington6596

This was a lightbulb moment for me! After years of following style tips for pear shapes, I could never understand why outfits felt so off. Now I see that high contrast top and bottoms and severe waist definition do not suit soft summer (confirmed) or soft natural (suspected). I went shopping this weekend and for once felt confident in the pieces I was buying: gray and blue tones, soft waist definition, and blurred or small patterns. So much more flattering!

( though i think unpacking colour contrast vs value contrast even more is something that really helped me understand. Like if you are really colourful in features you might have 'high color ' contrast and need more colors in outfit and low value contrast etc re depth. Or gamines looking good in high colour contrast often as add movement; dramatic it's often high value contrast). ...and then of course there is your season and like you said weighing it all up really.

I'm a light or soft Summer and a Goth. I'm low contrast. I have some tips. Black and classic Goth style definitely doesn't look 'bad' on me but it doesn't look harmonious. A lot of the time I embrace this. I look like a vampire or ghoul. But people like you and I look absolutely AMAZING if we're inspired more by a ghostly, misty, ethereal look. Greys and silvers (if you're cool), or ghostly white. Maybe creams if you're warm. You can wear corsetry or belts and harnesses with big boots to make it look edgy and alternative. I also go for a washed black (more like grey really) finish on my black clothes - especially jeans. If I feel I have to wear black - like when there's a statement item I need in my wardrobe and changing the colour would change the entire vibe and not have the same appeal (like an ankle length black trench) the material matters. Leather reflects a lot of light so I can wear it. Same with velvet - it has a soft quality even when it's black so I can wear it. Matte black fabrics looks really bad next to my face. If I wear unflattering matte black anyway, like I often do, I need to balance it out by creating some artificial contrast in my features. Darker eye makeup or a darker lip.

Any person with any shade intensity can be bright (light skin, medium, dark skin) but this doesnt u can wear any type of contrast,if u are bright u can wear black(not always)but in certain lights u can wear black if u are bright.

Tbh, I never see enough examples that are medium value like beyonce, rihanna, zendaya complexion. I feel like it's easy to tell contrast for those with very light or very dark skin (at least to me). But for those in the medium range with dark hair or light hair, like... ??

As a black girl, I can confirm that the black girl you have put on the thumbnail is low contrast. If you were to put her in black and white clothes she'd look so bad she'd actually be shocked. Some black people can be low contrast and others can be high contrast but that one right there is low through and through

I know 100% I need high contrast, but naturally my face doesn't have it and my features look very plain and blur into each other. I have dishwasher blonde hair, eyelashes and eyebrows and medium blue eyes and naturally have absolutely nothing about me. I've been dying my hair various shades of red since I was 11, and dye my eyebrows and eyelashes fairly dark and it looks like my natural colouring. It makes my features stand out and I'm always told how pretty I am (but it's obviously not real). What does this make me? I always wear medium or high contrast clothes because low contrast clothing looks awful on me

There is a color theory system that just defines characteristics. So you can just be bright cool and deep. Bright Winters and Deep Winters both fit into this category. I haven't explored this idea further. Because I feel like in a sense it's not wrong, but there is probably some nuance to it. I have typed myself as a Bright Winter, but in order to be bright you need contrast. The dark colors have to be harmonious too for the logic apply. So in a way, I am both?

Mmm I desagree with the part that u say if u are bright type u can use high contrast. Any person with any shade intensity can be bright (light skin, medium, dark skin) but this doesnt u can wear any type of contrast,if u are bright u can wear black(not always)but in certain lights u can wear black if u are bright.
Another thing that I hear often is that if u have very very dark skin eyes and hair u automaticaly have high contrast when this is not true. But this a great video for someone who doesnt know or never heard about it👍🏽.
Mmm Taylor swift is a great example of someone who have low contrast but is bright in chroma. Lupita, also a ...wait, actualy Lupita is medium in chroma😅.
U can have high contrast and be low in chroma(soft type) and low contrast and be high in chroma.

It might be true but having high saturation/chroma naturally increases you level of contrast. Taylor could have even less contrast if her features were muted.

@@_K_h_u_s_h_i yes agree, but I was talking in terms of value. In terms of chroma obviosly as u said increase contrast because the colors appears pure, clear like a true red combined with a bright yellow creats contrast in if in terms of value the colors arent so contrasting!!
