I was an Armorer in the Corps. One unique problem, only one time, the hammer pin walked out on a Marine at the range. That blew my mind because I've never seen that before or after that. On another note, the sling swivel being riveted to the barrel is another weak point of the rifle. Having the sling attached to the barrel makes another pressure point on it, causing it to flex when used.
Other than the short comings of the rifle, its reliability that I've seen was great, besides that one time malfunction previously stated. If the Marine Corps would've done some modifications to the rifle, like free floating the barrel and maybe changing the barrel profile, it would've been superb. I believe thatere was a small batch that had those mods, but i can't remember the name of the rifle, maybe SMR or SAR, something aolng those lines. Just a handful of rifles but not Corps wide.

I was an armored in the Marine Corps. I worked on A1s through A4s. I concur with your assessments you presented. The 3 rd burst was a joke. The cams were getting chewed up and mangled. We even had one go full auto because the cam was shot. The amount of money spent on R&D to supposedly save money on ammo was due to how it was fired in Nam. We trained to fire burst, usually 4-6 rds much like we did with M60s. The accuracy with the A4 was due mainly by beefing up the metal in the upper and lower receivers. R or L shooting I personally only had to adjust the sights 1-2 clicks at specified range. I personally believed in the A4 as a trust worthy weapon. I do support bayonet training and use. Lastly, like you, they should have made the barrel whole on the exterior.

I built an M16A4 using a free float rail. I took the FSB off, slid the free float barrel nut on, slid the 12" free float quad rail on, mounted the quad rail to the barrel nut, installed the FSB back on with the gas tube and front handguard cap already attached. The front handguard cap for the drop in handguards fits inside the free float rail with about 1/16" clearance all around. It looks identical to the classic M16A4, unless you stop and look at the rail real close, you will see that the rail is not touching the front handguard cap. I did my own trigger job on it, installed reduced power springs and it pulls at 4 lbs, with a smooth as glass action, and crisp break. I'm running an older Bushnell 4 x 18 scope on it. I get 1" MOA at 100 yards, with cheap steel case ammo. It is a great shooter

Before dismissing bayonets, there’s a few things to consider.
    1. War is chaos, ammo is limited and things don’t always go as planned.
    2. Whatever your plan is, the enemy gets a vote (includes opting for human wave tactics)
    3. They used to say putting guns on fighter jets (like the F4) with “modern” missiles was “obsolete” since they’d just shoot them down before they got close enough for guns. History shows this was a mistake.
    4. Bayonets still have an intimidation value which is useful for crowd control. There are accounts from veterans noting local populace’s tendency to become more subdued when the bayonets were out.

@@TheInfantry98 lol I don’t entirely disagree. Bayonets used to be indispensable but now their importance has diminished significantly. WWI and the machine gun proved you can’t just mindlessly throw masses of infantry in a bayonet charge and overrun positions like in olden days. Bayonets may not be as integral as it used to be but that doesn’t mean they’re entirely useless in modern conflicts either. From Vietnam to Iraq there have been instances where bayonets proved useful. The Marine Corps still trains with bayonets. It’s understood that it’s a tool who’s deployment should be left to a very limited set of circumstances but nonetheless, you want to have them and know how to use them should those unlikely circumstances arise. Perhaps an enemy, knowing Americans reliance on CAS and artillery would favor the tactic of getting so close that Americans can’t use said CAS/artillery support.

As I understand, the government profile barrel was born from a misunderstanding. They put test rods down the barrel to check if it was straight and they had a bunch getting stuck at the gas port. They took this to mean the barrel was bending there and so, thickened the barrel. But in reality, the barrels weren't bent, the gas ports had burrs on them. And also, thickening the barrel past the gas port wouldn't even prevent it from bending at the gas port, so it was a mistake stacked on top of another mistake.

What you found out with burst is what I learned in Marine bootcamp. Our CO told us this before we tried our rifles on burst the first time. “ You will most likely never use burst. It fires so fast that with a proper hold you’ll end up putting three rounds into the same target at less than 200 yards. You will only use burst when shooting at distant targets where by then the spread will be big enough to give you a better chance of a hit. Otherwise, you will never use burst.” So we went to a foxhole, aimed at man size targets at 100 yards, and put the rounds into a fist sized group.

The problem with the M16A4 isn't the 20" barrel, it's the 12" KAC rail and optic. Those things are 9 pounds unloaded without optic if you believe the FM. I think most people care about the weight of an M4 over the 5 inches of extra barrel length.

I served in the Marines in iraq and Afghanistan. I had an m16a4 in Iraq with an acog. Its crazy combat accurate and a good shooter with follow up shots. Cqb isnt as bad as people think, but inside vehicles is where the length was an issue. Then i had an m4 with an acog in Afghanistan. Way nicer to move around in vehicles and way nicer with the weight reduction carrying everything they load you down with. My biggest complaint about both of them was the worst trigger on the plannet. Mine felt like a 15lb pull on both of them.

I was an instructor at the NGMTC SDM course at Camp Robinson Arkansas (along with Gary Wallace (MO), Chuck Reed (KY), Joe Noe (IA), Mark Richards (IN), Chris Greene (TX), Tommy McGee (LA) and the gang, best group of humans I ever worked with!).
The SDM course issued the M16A4 w/ TA31NSN ACOGs to students at that time. Part of the graduation requirements included ranging and engaging twenty SITs / iron maidens, out to 600m +/- 25m on the unknown distance range with IRONS and then Optics, a generous 10 minute time limit for each run, 70% hit rate to pass. That M16A4 w/M855 green tip (more so with M855A1) is totally capable of striking targets at that distance. The SITs were standard NATO size, 1 meter tall, .5 meter wide.roughly 40 x 20 inches.
Regarding the USGI iron sights on the M16A4 (and M4 and M16A2 for that matter). That USGI front sight should have been made to come to a sharp point rather than a flat square. I loathe it. Also, the aperture on the USGI "long range" rear sight (and M4/M4A1 BUIS) is ENORMOUS, way too big! The M16A4 is capable of much better iron sight performance with that slight improvement.
Notice the front sight profile on the WWII Nazi bolt action rifle. They come to a sharp point at the tip. I don't understand the US Army / USMC fetish with the squared off front sight tip. (Sidebar: the Marines also contributed to the design requirements of the M16A2, you can thank the Marines for that adjustable rear sight, the Army didn't want it!) The USGI front sight ought to come to a sharp point, rather than a flat square. The NAZIs got the front rifle sight design right. Pride & our cut and paste culture I guess is why the Army can't adopt something that works better.
Anyhow, that squared off USGI front sight gives the shooter only a general idea of shot placement at distance. With the USGI front sight It's like using a sheet of plywood as a front sight on the 500m and 600m SIT targets. "SIT: Stationary Infantry Target" as referred to in the US Army Corps of Engineers Range Design Guide. www.hnc.usace.army.mil/Missions/Installation-Support-and-Programs-Management/Range-and-Training-Land-Program/Range-Design-Guide/

Some shooters prefer a larger front sight post because it makes for quicker recognition, from what I have been reading in some research before. The sharper point was on the M16 A1 however and I believe that you can swap out the posts with the older style. However, the M1 Garand had very similar sights to the M16 and it also included the fatter front sight post. The burley corn sights of the axis powers may seem precise but they are hard to use when trying to Kentucky windage shots.
The doctrine that was initially developed for the M16 seemed to suggest that the rifles wouldn't be used past 400 ish meters so a more precise, "match" front sight post like the M16 A1 didnt really matter all that much as past that distance, the idea was that Crew-served weapons would take over.

All I know is I had a selective fire with forward assist and bayonet option, 20 inch barrel I believe. I am not a full gun guy, just what I remember and like from training. I have built a couple AR15 16 inch semi copies WITH a bayonet adapter for the shorter barrel length. I have a spot in my heart for the bayonet. May I never have to use my civilian tools in a life or death situation...But the sight of a naked homeowner charging an invader with a rifle with a big ass knife on the end of it because they broke into the wrong house just mite make the person rethink his life decisions. Might save a lot of headache if it stops rounds going downrange.

The men used to laugh and ask me “Sergeant, when you load your rifle do you like jam powder and a projectile muzzle first?” Ha ha, do push ups was my usual response. Now I understand why people hated that burst fire in M16A2 and A4. All this time I thought that everytime it switches from semi to burst it retains the 3-round burst. One has to have a very good trigger discipline to use that AND the memory of predicting how many rounds it'll fire next, to boot. But does that discourage me from hating it? Not at all; but at least I learned how it works and how to utilize it
And, a lot of A2s and A4s (alongside old A1s) in service here in Philippines are active in frontline use. The soldiers here never complained about it as far as I know and I am yet to hear one (nor does the length of the guns/barrel), which makes me confident to say that we Filipinos are that good in using burst fire. Or maybe I'm wrong, who knows. And very generous of you to show us the bayonet. I felt M16s look naked without one

This was the only time I got to shoot with both an M16A4 and an ACOG and the only time I hit a 300 meter target with an Army issue rifle until after I got refractive eye surgery.
