Sounds like the rings had to seat to stop using oil. I was glad you decided to keep this tractor. I remember when you were about ready to part ways with it.
Hi Wes, Thanks for the great video :-). Here in Ireland there is a company that makes air compressors that fit on either front or back of a tractors PTO shaft . Many benefits. Namely fuel , space , transport and having access to air anywhere in the field . Maybe you have this type of unit in the states Wes !? All the best and safe working . :-)
That shredder does a beautiful job. That would be sweet to no till wheat into. 4960 is running like a champ. My favorite tractor you have! Which he I love all of farming
Wes, try just leaving that 4960 engine oil a quart low on the dipstick it may just stabilize at that level and stop consuming oil. Every engine is a bit different. Cheers mate 🍻
You'll not be too far from me once you get to painter VA. Cape Charles VA is where you will be going near Bay bridge tunnel. Go to a restaurant called The Oyster Farm. Right on the bay. You will see a beautiful sunset. Great food and cold beer. Enjoy the Eastern shore while you are here. Maybe I'll see you in the travel on RT 13 heading south. Good luck and take care.
I love that 4960, the stace of the tractor, the sound of the engine, I know its basic, I know its smelly and noisy and I think thats why Tim likes it so much as well as the sentamental factor.
Wish my dad had that wherewithal to not run our hedgecutter minus a flail ignoring the small blocks they weld on it to balance it which screwed the bearing and shaft. After getting the price for a new head and one for a complete new cutter he decided to run it until it shook itself to death it which took about 6 to 8 years was was noisy and headache inducing but taught him a valuable lesson not to run it without a flail
Wes nice video! Looks like the 4960 engine is officially for the most part broken in now... as you know oil consumption is kinda normal for some engines until they get broken in. Glad to here the Hiniker is working out well for you Wes!
Wes you should know the smoke is from the extra power needed to spin those main bearing Huh and you said you know what your doing 😂🤣😂🤣 Nice shot at the end its nice to see the family are happy and well.
We bale ALOT of stalks where we live in Iowa. 20% moisture is very wet for stalks. They are going to heat. We generally let them dry 4-5 days after combining. For mulch you will be fine with them keeping, but they would never work for bedding. The slabs would be like concrete. Also I'm surprised your knotters were working. If I try to bale green stalks the needles pull them into the knotters and I misstie all day long.
NoC yes sir Jpaydirt loves the switchblade turbo made by blaylock turbo in Baxter springs Kansas. He said that the switchblade turbo has doubled the oil life and I am not positive but I believe that he was also able to turn down the fuel and adjust the air fuel rate using less fuel without sacrificing power. The switchblade turbo also almost eliminates turbo lag. Check it out on CZcams Jpaydirt switchblade turbo
NoC one of the negative issues might be the possibility that he might to change or have a custom exhaust manifold maybe unless blaylock would design a bolt in replacement for the 4960. According to Mr Jpaydirt Jim blaylock is an awesome guy a real turbo nut willing to work with anyone. I think that he would work with Wes just fine because Wes is also a very knowledgeable guy
@@lawrencelacenski9781 he did not turn down the fuel. He adjusted the air fuel ratio control which controls the speed of the rack opening so the fuel being injected matches the air volume. Less black smoke = less unburnt fuel = cleaner oil. Otherwise you are absolutly correct. Also keep in mind that the engines Jpaydirt runs in the old B scrapers and H dozer are 30 to 50 years old the diesel tech is very basic, the C15 in his Kenny is much more current and also responded well to the switch blade over the compound boost turbos. Cheers mate 🍻
Michael Brown thanks for the correction sir it’s been a while since I’ve watched the switchblade turbo series. That 4960 is almost 30 years old so if Wes wanted to put one on I think that it should be fairly simple because I am fairly certain that the engine is mostly mechanically controlled out of possibly a electronic fuel shut off
Really need to have your injectors checked or rebuilt. Black smoke can be related to bad injectors even though the engine runs fine.. The injectors could may not be atomizing the fuel properly and could lead to engine damage. Really a cheap preventive measure and could actually save you money in fuel savings. Bad injectors waste fuel and fuel is money.
How many hours do you have on the 4960 since the recent rebuild? It definitely sounds like its running like a champ. I'm guessing your close to 100 already.
Sounds making the 4960 earn it's keep as a good ol tractor. It's funny how my mother sees a little bit of black smoke come out of the exhaust of diesel motor. I say mom that is perfectly normal for a diesel to do it.
20-25 moister, aren't you (they)worried about the bales heating in your piles? When ever I've baled at them moisters if I don't run acid the bales warm up pretty fast if the pile is stacked tight.
Not sure it’s been along time but if you turn back the fuel pump a turn or so you should be able to stop the unburnt fuel on start up with no drop in power

Watching your rebuild videos and seeing the 4960 in the field is proof enough for me, that you can rebuild a tractor out in the barn
Joe was trippin' the light fantastic ;)
Thanks for the footage of William and Theresa. It's always great to see them and especially how that boy has grown!

TROS SPONSOR why ?
William has grown a bunch since I last saw him Wes/Teresa.
It won't be long he will be playing with that 4960 like a Ertl toy.HAHA!!.
The original 4960 rebuild was how I found your channel and have been watching ever since.
I started watching when Wes & Timothy power tested a Johnny Pop against a Farmall pulling heavy loads.
I think I found his channel when the tractor burnt and have been here ever since
I started watching when the 4960 burned too. I remember the cannon and blowing up the inner tube with acetylene.
4960 is just a chunk of Iron parts... Sumthins worn... stick in a new one and off she goes..
Fantastic old tank of a tractor !!

Sounds like you need a flatbed tractor trailer down there if your driving 65miles with a tractor.
It takes time for the rings to seat properly. Newly rebuilt engines burn oil and have blowby that's normal.
