My very first car was a 68 cougar and I miss it still. It was factory green with vinyl

Had one of these in 68 with 427, came with limited slip diff which made it impossible to get the power to the ground, would take my 66 Fairlane GT with 4 speed and 456 locker over it for street racing but the cougar for looks. Raced the ones with 428's beat them every time. Unfortunately the car got stolen and stripped for the engine. I recovered it and was going to buy it back from insurance company to reassemble it but Uncle Sam had other plans for me.

wendell worth - I too would take a Cougar over a mustang though I’m not exactly envious I am well aware of my not having the resources, due to possible poor decision making in the past, to have done anything about obtaining it before this man did. I am fairly certain that he also did a way more remarkable job gettin it restored than I could have conjured.

If Steve McQueen were a gentleman, he would have driven one of these, while Bullit was being filmed.
Both the Mustang and Cougar of that Era were built with firewalls of their own, when 427s were to get dropped in.

The early production 68 Cougar GT-E with the 427 Side Oiler might be my favorite Mercury ever. The only downside to these cars is that they all came with the C6 automatic trans...no 4 speed option. I'm a Mopar guy but the Ford FE 427 Side Oiler is one of my favorite big blocks ever to come out of Detroit. This one is the 390 horse version with hydraulic lifters so it ran smooth and could be driven daily on the street with no problem at all. The solid cammed 410 and 425 horse 427 was a race ready engine detuned just enough to make it somewhat streetable but was still too radical for everyday use unless you didn't mind adjusting the valves every couple thousand miles. Always really liked the Ford FE engines...the 390, 406, 427, and 428. I think the 352 was an FE engine also

I used to have a 1968 Cougar XR-7 (mine was not GT-E) and it was all stock. I'm confused by what I see here, because there is no center console. I thought all of the XR-7s had a center console. Also, the 2-tone silver paint looks not original to me, but I know very little about the GT-E package cars. Still, really nice shape and beautiful paint.

I used to have a 1968 Cougar, although I cannot remember the designation because I have a memory problem. - One day I was on the freeway, the road had a little rain on it, and I was boxed in by semi-tractors and cars. When I saw an opening I pushed on the accelerator and the car fish tailed all over the road even with limited slip rear end, my mistake

I've liked these old Cougars since I was a kid. Not something I know a lot about though. The "wood grain" remark would've been out of place in the 80's, but now it's hilariously relevant. +1 for nostalgia. What I'm really curious about are the elusive FE, or SOC engines as I've heard them called. Thanks for the upload.
