Back in 68 when my folks were at Hart Taylor Lincoln Mercury dealer in Spencerport NY buying a new Colony Park wagon, I had the fortunate opportunity to set in a 68 427 Cougar just like this one. Only it had a black vinyl top with a moon roof. It was loaded with an auto tranny. Man how I wanted that car but I was only 17 at the time and it was way out of reach price wise for me. Still a real thrill to set in that car which I new they didn't make very many at the time.

Did the GTE’s have moon roofs? I thought they were exclusive to the X-R7G. Cool story.

This one was a GT-E as noted on the fender badges. The moon roof was open. I didn't look at the widow sticker as I was aghast at how cool the car was and just drooled when I opened the hood and saw the 427 in the boiler room.

In June 1967, right out of Navy Bootcamp, I purchased in Jefferson City, MO a new 1967 Mercury Cougar, XR-7, GT (390), Dan Gurney Special. It was Maroon with a white vinyl top. In September 1967, I was transferred to Guam and it was sold. I wonder where it is today.

  • @richarddevoe5871

Absolutely love it !!! I started building one 20 years ago. Had a 68 GT without its 390.. had a 1967 - 428 Police Interceptor block I built with solid lifters, 596 lift cam and improved CJ heads, compression would have been 10.4, Toploader and a 3.50 rear I believe… then sold everything just before assembly to buy a 71 Roadrunner like I had my senior year of HS.(which I still have) But I sometimes wish I finished with my Cougar to see the monster I created…. even the shop guy at Jegs who balanced the internals wanted to see the finished product…That’s life

I had a 1968 Mustang that I had modified its 289 engine and could beat most big block cars in a drag race. I ran it up to 90 on a onramp (yes I had the tires squealing) and when I looked in the mirror when I let off to slow to the speed limit and merge onto I-64 was shocked to see a car close behind me. It was one of those 427 Cougars.

A great feature of a beautiful car. It's wonderful to see that the owner drives it a lot. Note, that is the standard XR-7 interior, the "option" on the window sticker is for a credit for the non-leather interior. In that case, the seat upholstery pattern was the same, but vinyl and "comfortweave" vinyl were used in place of leather. Also, there is no such thing as a "console delete" car. It was simply an option that some cars have and others do not.

My neighbor for about 15 years had one of these back in the day. The 427 with a 4 speed manual.
He had a country western band and had been out playing one night and was heading back into town and had to come across a 2.5 mile long trestle (bridge) and decided to open it up. A county sheriff was behind him doing 120 MPH which was all his cop car would do and my friend was walking away from him so, the cop did NOT turn on his lights or siren and caught up to him in town.
Well, he caught him, arrested him and took him to the jail. My friend was wearing the suit he wore when his band performed, It was gold with musical notes going up the lapels. When he was brought in the booking officer knew him and his band, so, they let his sit in a waiting area. They booked him and let him out on his own recognizance.
When it went to court the office testified that my friend was going faster than 120 mph and my friend got off with a big fine.
On his way out of the court my friend told the officer that he had been doing 145mph and they both laughed.

    • @nukarr
      @nukarr Před 6 měsíci

@musclecarcampy9922 ? 5liter is 302 ci & 427 is 7 Liter those badges were only issued by Ford UK Factory & UK got Right hand Driver seat & Continental Europe got the Left hand drivers seat.
Another difference is the CAM & Lifters the Euro spec cars had slightly hotter cam & Hydraulic Lifter springs had a slightly higher rating instead of the U.S. spec engines good for 6000rpm Euro Spec engines were good for 7000rpm red line max out.
Also the Smog pump was different as in they didn't have one.
Someone added a u.s. spec smog pump when they brought it over - most likely a GI serving in Germany I'd check the registrations & Marti report betcha it's a UK made German import & then Shipped to u.s. & it simply got lost in the shuffle as to its origin.
It's much rarer than a u.s. built car since wages for UK & Germans were much lower & few could afford a High end model like this one.
It'd be interesting to find the original owner & see if the family has any pics from when it was over seas.
AMC did this also cept their factory was in Germany & theyed SHIP parts over for assembly & the JAVELIN SST AMX Models here also have the Euro spec dash instruments & Hotter Cam Spring set up & are RARE RARE only no one in the states even knows about them.
Guy in Switzerland is sitting on a PRISTINE Javelin SST Euro spec best I've ever seen & can't sell it.
No PARTS over here to service them same as that Cougar.

The 1968 427 was not what the previous 427 was. The 68 had a hydraulic cam simular to the 428 CJ. The heads on the 68 427 was very close to the 428 CJ heads. Actually pretty much the same. The 428 CJ had a longer stroke. With that in mind I would guess the 428 would be a little more responsive on the street. On the quarter mile track it would be pretty close between the 427 and 428 Couger. But between the Couger and Mustang I believe the Mustang would win because of it's weight advantage. The few 1968 428 Light Weight Mustangs were certainly much quicker than the Cougers. @@josephmercurio1024

The 351 Cleveland came with different cylinder heads depending if it was built with a 2-bbl or 4-bbl carb. The ones on the 4V version flowed much better, so a lot of people swamped them onto their 2V cars, hence the term 4-barrel heads.
