    I have one that survived the deep freeze this past December that I planted in March. It was knocked back to almost the ground and started side shoots that have given me more kale than the 6 plants that I originally had.

    Since they lasted so long, is it worth letting them bolt to get the seeds?

      With all of the hybrid varieties ya never know what variety you will end up with from the seeds. We used to always leave a few plants on many of our "greens" go to seed and store til the next season. Some times it works out and other times you end up with an inferior variety that's more susceptible to disease or low productivity along with other negative characteristics. I prefer to focus on growing what works best in my climate rather than rolling the dice. Nothing wrong with experimenting as a few such as Arugalas seem to do fine

      He mentioned last October, kale can aslo bolt if the plant gets stressed out too not just the heat, could be a pest/root problem if your Temps haven't been that high

      I'm in Niagara region zone 5 in Canada, and as soon as it got warm, it just bolted, I'm wondering if because the temp increased rapidly. I don't think there would have been any pest pressure yet.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  Před rokem +1

      Could have been the rapid temp increase. The variety is Darkibor.

      @@LazyDogFarm Good to know, thanks! I just put in an order for that kale! I think it's the first time I'm willingly buying it 😆 I've gotten a few free packets and don't really eat it often, but that kind looks good for salads and chips. I'm kinda hoping it's low in flavour high in water, since I'm not much into bitter!

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  Před rokem +1

      It's not as sweet as it is during the winter months, but it's not bitter either. We've been keeping it watered well, which helps.

    • @shirleyk623
      @shirleyk623 Před rokem +1

      @@archstanton9703 yep mine too. I wonder why the aphids don't like chard. I think next time I'm going to interplant them together and see what happens. My chard just didn't like the heat and withered leaf by leaf. I just pulled it to get a harvest before it totally died.

    • @archstanton9703
      @archstanton9703 Před rokem +1

      @@shirleyk623 I might just grow kale in the cooler months because of pests. I found a bunch of caterpillars eating most of the leaves on the kale and removed them before spraying BT. The Fordhook Swiss chard has survived the heat here and done well here in AZ. I purchased some red chard seeds but didn't get a chance to plant them and don't know how well they'll do out here.
