As things get worse for people already in dire straits, sometimes, as history has shown, they embrace and follow those who tell them what they want to hear, even when those doing the telling are grifters and snake oil salesmen selling them nothing but smoke and mirrors.
If the new leadership does nothing to shore up the weak parts of our system of governance, parts that the whole world has now seen, so that the kinds of abuses committed by Grifters, Inc can't happen again., the next person with ambition to match Trump's, but who actually has a BRAIN, might just succeed in a coup attempt. And then where will we be?
He and his minions got away with so much lawbreaking with no real consequences to themselves. If there are not incentives to stop, why NOT do the same, or worse, in the future?
Trump's election loss is a good start, but we are far from being even remotely secure. We can't afford to go back to sleep.
Mexico has so many internal problems that it probably wishes for the French to come back.

If this buffoon can manage to sell almost half of the US on proto-fascism I shutter to imagine what a competent authoritarian leader could do. And all the while we're racing toward environmental catastrophe, economic ruin and mass famine, which we don't even have the time to address because we're still having to spend all of our energy on fighting deep corruption in politics and in the justice system. This is going to get very ugly.
