The Day The Ocean Froze

  • During a recent cold snap here on the east coast, the morning of Saturday, February 4th, 2023 produced some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded in New England. I went out to create a short video vignette shot by me (Chris Shane) and friend Luke Kaneb from two different locations of the Maine coast.
With on the ground temperatures hovering around -15° degrees, the constant 40-50mph winds off shore made for a wind chill effect of roughly - 40° degrees below zero. Simply filming this was a matter of survival, setting up cameras, changing quickly dying batteries, dialing in settings, all while keeping our bodies and digits just "warm enough," though never comfortable.
    We hope you enjoy...

I appreciate the footage what gear did you use to shoot this? CZcams algorithm fed me your channel and for once it was not a disappointment, please keep the videos coming!

      Thanks, we really appreciate it!
This all shot on Sony a7siii camera bodies. The primary lens used was a Sony 100-400 GM, and second to that a Sony 24-70 2.8 GM. The main challenge was keeping fingers warm here.
We've got another cold weather video from the coast of Maine coming soon, thanks so for watching.

Nice music. How come you don’t show the temperature reading?

We thought the title of the video was enough :)

@@chrisandchris It’s about your credibility of what you say and do. 😃

@@lavawurx808 well, anyone can also put a temperature reading in a video. Doesn’t mean it’s true :) We’d like to think it’s obvious it is extremely cold given the ice on the rocks, the sea smoke on the ocean which only occurs in zero to subzero temperatures, and the winds that are clearly whipping the sea smoke violently across the ocean. So, we’ll leave it up to the viewers imagination of how cold it really was.

Beautiful. Must have been tough to film in those conditions. How long did the equipment hold up?

Not easy, but the equipment usually fairs fine. The hands, not so much.
