    Just picked up a cool 1962 Starcraft (Raider)Fiberglass runabout with a 40hp Evinrude Bigtwin… I love it and can’t wait to hit the water as soon as possible!

      I just bought same boat, chocolate on Cream...28 hp no go. I wasn’t sure if I should get a 50, 60, or 75...I read where you should go with the max, which is 75?

    I just bought a 1965 Hydrodyne. When I give her the gas the nose points up and I cant see until she gets up on plane. These older boats have a shallower v-hull and fewer if any chines. But I love their look and on a calm glassy lake they are wonderful. On choppy waters, not so much.

    The length is 14 1/2' to 15' and the motor pushes it to around 35mph. The boat is owned by my 16 year old nephew, the driver, whom I helped restore the boat and the motor.
    Thanks,
    Don

    Glad to see that electric-shift lower unit is still holding up. No other outboard manufacturer made THAT mistake! OMC abandoned it after '72, and they finally put thru-tilt steering on the motors. It still took another couple of years to get THAT right; the first ones didn't have the pivot point far enough inside the transom to clear on a lot of boats.

      @pjimmbojimmbo1990 Před 5 lety

      The Hydro-Electric Shift was very good unit. It shifted very fast, with minimal wear to the gears and clutch Dog. Problem occurred when the wrong oil was used and/or Water got into the oil. it was discontinued because of some concerns about the engine defaulting to Forward gear, instead of Neutral.

    We used a TeleFlex Safe-T QC Rotary Boat Steering System 13'. You will need to measure your boat for your setup's cable length. I'm not sure but I think ours was a 13' cable length. Most all boat suppliers or ebay have them available for around $140.00.
    This setup for the older motor requires a Master Kit, Aluminum - Teleflex Marine Part # SA27256P (iboats) or similar kit. We were able to purchase a kit from ebay less than $50.
    With 1 year running this setup, no problems as yet.

    Nice!👌💯Looks similar to my boat!

  • @orangecrate39
    @orangecrate39 Před 11 lety

    When we were changing over to Teleflex system the shaft diameter was 3/4" or .750" and the old cable system shaft was the same. I used the old steering wheel but had to use the old base cover with some extra sawing on the dash board getting it to work.

    Enjoyed your video...I have a 1961 Crestliner 14' and its made very similiar to your boat. I'm currently looking for a motor just like you have there for it. How long is your boat and how fast does it push it?

      Thanks for your comment. It was a very bumpy ride that day and this was my first video with the Starcraft. After uploading on You Tube the program asked if I wanted it to reduce the shaky parts of the video and I hit the go button. Bad move on my part. I could not get it to revert back to original. To me it looks too distorted.
      Thanks again,

    As far as the aluminum there are some acid alum cleaner on the market some say is good or you could use Purple Power but don't let it stay on the alum over 5 minutes and hose off before it drys. Buff it out with a muslin cloth wheel and Mother's Alum Polish. Protect adjacent surfaces with tape or something similar when using a wheel. Do it by hand if you don't have a wheel.

    Just bought the same boat...needs work, but has all new wiring, could use new paint...far from being original but the hull is good! Windshield is pretty worn, but can’t figure out how to restore! Any tips?

      They have products for cleaning - restoring the old plexiglass windshields. I can't remember exactly what it's called now, but you could go to a good Glass Shop and I'm sure they could point you in the right direction. I've used a couple good compounds back in the day when I was in the Glass business. We used to make windshields for such applications. If it weren't for the fact I just acquired a 1967 Starcraft Newport I wouldn't be commenting or reading the comments. Good luck with your boat, a friend gave me the one I have trailer and all.

    I've got a 1967 Crestliner Del Rio I'm restoring. Interested in changing the steering cable/pulley system over to teleflex. Anyone know how I can convert the original steering wheel over to the new system? Also anyone who knows where I can order a new rub rail channel or know how to restore the original aluminum rub rail channel and windshield frame it'd be greatly appreciated.

    What age is the kid driving the boat at? In New Jersey, you need to be 16 or older to drive a boat with any form of steering consoles and / or any type of motor higher than 10 HP with any Hull. At 14 you could only drive a boat with a 10 hp motor (Tiller, no console) with a 12 ft hull.

    • @orangecrate39
      @orangecrate39 Před 8 lety

      The kid on the left was 12 and the driver was 16 years old. In South Carolina I think the minium requirements are 16 years old with a valid driver's license and having passed a boating course..
