  • This is the all-new plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport, and Mat’s about to find out whether you should choose it over the petrol-powered edition!
    For starters, it looks pretty striking and is instantly recognisable as a Range Rover Sport. When it comes to design differences compared to the standard Range Rover Sport… Well, there aren’t any! Apart from the charging port towards the rear of the car, the plug-in hybrid and petrol cars are identical.
    It’s a similar story on the inside, too! It comes with a large infotainment screen, good quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin, and big, comfortable seats. The only difference compared to the petrol-powered car is some additional screens on the infotainment system, as well as new options on the digital dials to allow you to drive in electric-power mode.
    Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six engine along with an electric motor. The range-topping edition can produce 510hp, which sends power to all four wheels.
    As for the price, well it’s pretty expensive, coming in at just under £114,000! But then again, that’s only £4,000 more than the petrol-powered car! So with that in mind, should you just choose the plug-in hybrid instead? Stick with Mat and see for yourself!

    I have a discovery sport hybrid (which I love), that has exactly the same issue as when Mat tried to launch it in electric mode. You will find its an EV heater issue, I used to run my hybrid in pure EV mode and got fantastic mileage for the 15 or so miles I usually do a day. A the start of winter wouldn't stay in EV mode and my mileage is now 35mpg! PHEVS only exist because of legislation, it only makes sense if you keep charging the battery otherwise it is just dead weight and deteriorates massively your MPG hence buying a petrol only version is not that a bad idea for many people

    • @harryspeakup8452
      @harryspeakup8452 Před rokem +18

      Untrue. Even if you never plug it in at all you still get a substantial benefit from energy recovery under braking, and the ability to do slow stop-start rush hour condition without burning a lot of fuel at the most wasteful crawling speed for internal combustion. Just like a normal non plug-in hybrid

    • @slanahesh
      @slanahesh Před rokem +6

      Phevs exist because until relatively recently it was mega expensive to pack enough batteries into a car to get an acceptable range and it was reasonably easy to convert an existing model to phev without rebuilding your cars from the ground up to support full ev. These days though they only really still get made to satisfy eu emissions regulations and get company car tax reductions for ice cars still on sale.

    • @mickfinn2596
      @mickfinn2596 Před rokem

      @@harryspeakup8452 Thats just wrong. I used to own a Range Rover P400e PHEV and the energy recovery under braking was minimal, certainly not enough to increase the battery range by a single mile. And the other problem was that, just like the new Sport P510e PHEV reviewed in this video, there is no capability for the engine to charge the battery. Basically in both cars, once the battery runs out they just become a car 400kg heavier than the equivalent petrol/diesel version with a smaller fuel tank so not only do they consume more fuel but the range is reduced even further because of the smaller tank. I have just replaced my P400e with a new Sport D300 and that is achieving 35-37mpg on fast motorway runs and is averaging 33mpg overall (compared to 27.9mpg for the P510e in this test). And apart from that it handles and rides better than the PHEV (I test drove both the P440e and D300 before I made my decision) because of its lower weight and has space for a spare wheel. No contest overall

      USUALLY most manufacturers kick in the electric motor after about 30ish mph regardless if you've set it to EV only, since they don't TYPICALLY design it for much higher speeds. Couldn't tell you why, maybe efficiency of the motor dips down and designing around it would cost too much?

      It might be worth getting an oil change and reset the oil counter. Have experienced on some Evoque PHEV's, the oil dilution will prevent correct operation of EV. There has also been a change in oil spec. This is only if your vehicle starts in EV, gets up to 12-15ish MPH and then ICE kicks in.
      Other issues are with the HV coolant heater, they can lock themselves out, car will start in EV but as soon as you pull away it will kick in ICE.

At higher speeds, let’s say 40+, i.e. dual carriage way and motorway driving, I have regularly taken the battery from 10% or less to 80% in approx 50 to 60 miles of driving. I have a regular trip of approx 110 miles mostly motorway, I start on a full charge and do the first ~25 miles on battery, then switch to ICE in Save mode for the next ~50/60, which gets you to the max 80% recovery, then finish the journey on the recovered charge. The loss in ICE running mpg while in save mode is marginal at higher speeds, which makes the overall trip very efficient. Works for me.
