Extremely Rusty 1940's Coca-Cola 6-pack Restoration

- I will restore this Coca-Cola 6 pack. It's very rusty and it's missing the handle It's likely made during WWII because, usually these are made of aluminum but during the war aluminum was used for planes etc. and materials for these were changed to steel.
I decided to not use laser for rust removal this time, simply because I didn't want to miss opportunity to restore Coca-Cola item with Coke. I used sugar free version to avoind averything getting sticky. After 5 days in Coca-Cola lot of rust had fallen off and teh rest came off with metal brush easily., without any tretment it will take ages to get rust off with only a wire brush.
After removing rust, I bent the metal to it's original shape from the areas it had some damage. Rust had also damaged teh metal and caused a lot of pittin and even holes. I used filler to get rid of most of those adn sanded evertything down. For the paint I used first a base coat. I usually use filler base coat which is a little thicker than regular and can hide small imperfections or can be sanded down like filler. On toip of that I used RAL 9001 colored paint. Once the paint was properly dried I painted the Coca-Cola logo red with a brush. Next I clear coated the carrier with 2K (2 component) clear coat. It's much more glossy and durable than regular spray paint and it will protect the layers of paint underneath.
The carrier was also missing the handle. I searched some pictures what teh handles had looken like. I took a piece of beech wood and turned it into the correct shape on a lathe. The metal part of teh handle was made from 4mm aluminum rod. I made a custom jig to help me bend it to teh correct shape. After this I taped the wood part and painted the rod. like I hard done with the body. The wooden handle was finished with lacquer.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

I've never seen a six-pack holder like this. I seen millions of the wooden case holders in every antique store, but not these. nice work, sir.
If what he said about the switch from aluminum to steel during the war is true, that’s not surprising. Most of these cases were probably scrapped for the war effort. Certain metals were in such short supply and high demand that American pennies minted in 1943 were actually made of steel rather than copper.
@@TBustah i dont know what you said but ok
@@azurakakya8868 I don’t know how I could’ve been any clearer than that.
I wonder if it’s actually worth more if he didn’t restore it?
@@TBustah I have a couple of 1943 steel pennies. Some of the kids at work thought they were fake or really dirty because they weren’t copper.
I love the meta of coke being used to restore a coke bottle carrier.

No distracting music, no sound effects. Just pure joy of restoring old thing to it's glory. Just mesmerizing...
I have no issues with background music at all, but then again the sounds of metal scraping against metal really gets to me. So I much rather have some music to take the edge of that.

For flattening sheet metal parts, like the bottom of the carrier, my grandpa who was a smith, suggested using a wooden mallet as it only modifies tha shape of the metal not the structure. Metal hammer may flatten the material thinner causin additional deformation.
Wooden mallet, or its more modern counterpart- rubber!
Thats true a metal one flattens the metal and causes it to bend in weird ways a wooden one is better to use
@@HephaistosB
Well then, how about the rubber one right 🔨?
Does it *flattens the metal* like the metallic one 🤔?
@@rahadianaryo5979 i dont think it does , the rubber one doesnt give a strong of a hit like the steal one because the rubbers would just bounce off . Im not 100% sure tho its just what sounds logical to me and in practice i have used a metal one to reshape a aluminum piece

This is a new level of meta-humor - cleaning Coca-Cola containers in Coca-Cola. It would be more ironic if instead of Coca-Cola you used Pepsi. Pepsi would kill Coca-Cola somewhere.
If he puts a six pack holder of coca-cola under pepsi, maybe just found te rust instead of the holder.
Would've been funny if he put bottles of Pepsi in the container instead of the Coke.
Makes me wonder if this is sponsored ;)
@@miguelalejandrohernandezhe5620 😂😂😂😂
That's actually how they make Pepsi, they just leave a rusty piece of metal in a big vat full of coke and then can that rust-coke hybrid

The bottles from the era of that carrier were reusable and had the first use bottling plant's name molded into the bottom of the bottle.
cooll
Yep. When we were kids, we'd always see who's bottle came from farthest away.
Thats neat!
I think you really proved how precise you can be with your hands here. This is a work of art! The way you painted the logo and worked with the wood really made me feel like you are an all-rounder, absolutely in love ♡ ♡ ♡
Thankyou Odd Tinkering for always making this quality and entertaining content. It’s so relaxing to watch, if ever I can’t sleep I put this on and it makes me feel better. You are so meticulous in your cleaning and restoring which must of taken years of learning. Also the fact there is no talking, just pure noise of what your doing is amazing! Thankyou so much for creating.
You're truely a pro at fixing things.
There's a bit of hidden irony in this restoration: these holders were originally naked metal looking with red letters and handle, meanwhile the ones painted in white were Pepsi-Cola ones. Love the result and the video, thanks.
Thats because he had to sand it and using that stuff to fill bad spots.. So it is impossible to left it blank. Better using paint then going rusty again.
@@rallyscoot Well, that's pretty obvious. I think you didn't read my comment properly as at no point I suggested it shouldn't be painted.
I have 3 coke bottles from my grandfather's house they are painted white in the middle with red writing there from late 30s or early 40s
Yeah this is not a restoration at all. It is ruined.

This seemed like a pretty simple repair job. Just needed to clean the rust, repaint, and make a new handle. At least you didn't have to completely disassemble anything.
And I like that you used Coke to remove the rust. Nice touch.
The using of Cola itself to remove the rust was pure genius. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Personally I would have went with opposite color (all red with white logo) but I think the original logo was like that.
Joke's on me, my very first reaction when I saw the case was "ok, laser incoming". Kudos !
Haha, i was about to use it but i couldn't resist the chance to use coke on a coke item
@@OddTinkering That's just on point. Also, I must really say how much I love your videos. Beside the sheer quality of the restorations, you have 2M subscribers and money must not be an issue anymore, but there's still a very authentic touch to your content. Your tools are obviously still the same as when you began, used and all, and most of the stuff you use (apart said laser) are things I was seeing as a child in my father's workshop. It's just plain and efficient, and you use elbow grease, brain cells and experience instead of shiny and expensive stuff for the show. I can't tell you how much it's appreciated, thanks for your work, man, and a very happy new year.
I love all those antique Coca-Cola items. I think this one is particularly beautiful. As always, excellent work.
I'll save this for when I'm laying in bed tonight, it's like a bedtime story for adults.
i think it would’ve looked nicer if the colors were reversed ( red for the carrier and white letters for Coca cola)
Looks like he stuck with the original colors of the carrier.
@@gaming_with_rex4031
Well then, Rex. And if he's choose to use the *reversed color scheme* for that 6-pack carrier, that's sounds cool right...😏😎
I thought the original colors of the carrier was silver (aluminum)

So perhaps, the silver color works too 👍 (as it feels like it had a metallic sheen on it...)
Very Nice !!! I loved how good you painted the lettering! If you ever get the chance to restore another one of these, I would love to see the main part powder-coated Coca Cola Red, and the words painted that Cream White.
Restoring stuff like this is always made that bit harder when you don't have all the bits. Great job on doing your research and recreating the handle from scratch.👍

I’ve watched many restoration channels, and yours is still my favorite. Thanks for so many amazing videos :)
Because I've watched this channel I am suggested a whole hoard of other channels that restore things and this is the only one I trust. Man, brings back memories. Fantastic work.
That is so beautifully restored! 😍 Love this one my man! Very well done to you!
Great job. Considering the age of the carrier, the bottles were in amazing condition 😉🤣 The cola still worked well, I wonder if 'reducing' it before using (heating to reduce the fluid content by evaporation) would concentrate / increase the acidity.
That is so freaking kewl. I love the science behind the repair. Thanks for the explanation!
What a simple yet perfect restoration. Love it.
I love your stuffs man. Keep em coming. Can't wait to see more restoration videos especially the consoles!!! 😃
For complete authenticity (here in the USA anyway), you need to use the Mexican coke bottles, as they're sweetened with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and they will taste like Coke used to.
True
That’s kinda a myth
@@edwinsalisbury83 I've tasted the Mexican Coke and the Coke made by my local bottler and they _are_ different. Compared to glucose, fructose is passively absorbed further down the small intestine and doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion. Insulin-mediated glucose uptake and metabolism in adipose tissue play a key regulatory role in leptin concentrations. With fructose, leptin can’t do its job of helping you feel full...so you buy/eat/drink more. That's a win for Big Food and a loss for you.

Removing rust from a vintage coca-cola carrier using coca-cola! There's something very poetic about that!
What have we learned: The best way to remove rust from your coca-cola aluminum 6 pack case is with the fizzy drink itself.
Oh. And using an anvil to straighten the aluminum.
Thought the same thing Lamo
The fact that the holder is made by Coke and the only cure for it is the liquid that is made by the same company. Maybe Coke was ahead of its time?
Ah, maybe I was confusing, but the item is made of steel and I'm pretty sure it was made during world war 2 because most of exactly same looking items during that period were made of aluminum. During the war they stopped using aluminum in items like these because it was used for military purposes
I commend this man for using zero sugar Coke for cleaning the carrier and drinking one of the original taste Coke at the end.
Maybe not after the shaking they endured.
I really appreciate your videos. The vintage holders were usually red on the body and white on the text. That would've looked much better.

Why would you drill the handle by hand when you even have a woodworking lathe that allows you to drill with much higher precision?
I love that the Coca Cola bottle today still fits perfectly.
It' always great to see a restoration video of something other than videogames.
Once again, rust only weakness is cola
I use diluted hydrofluoric acid, sold under the brand name "Whink" that is intended for removing rust stains from fabric. It will instantly remove rust from chrome.
I guess you live in a country where the inhabitants can buy real things, here in Europe we have to make do with ... Coca Cola ...
Can it remove Rust from firefox as well?
I'm rather a JS guy...
I first discovered Whink in 1966. It was in stock at the hardware store where i worked. I didn't understand at first how dangerous it could be. This is diluted hydrofluoric acid. It will etch glass if not rinsed off right away. Be careful when using on porcelain, as it is also a form of glass. Concentrated hydrofluoric acid is the only chemical that will actually DISSOLVE glass. The much diluted form of this acid in Whink can still be dangerous ! ! I once applied it to some rust freckles using a cotton ball, without using any hand protection. I didn't feel anything at first, but a while later, it felt like my fingernails were coming off ! ! Do not breathe the fumes, or get the fumes into your eyes. Hydrofluoric gas will combine with body moisture to produce the acid in you ! !
All this being said, it works like a miracle, and removes stains when nothing else will.
You would never think it was old. Looks brand freaking new 😮😮👍👍
Just marvelous, the way you restore the stuff!
If the Phosphoric Acid Is That Strong, Imagine what Its doing to your Body
Your stomach also products hidrocloridric acid (H Cl), so...
Plus it stayed in there for 5 days and still didn't removed the rust perfectly as other acids do.
Agree, if it wasn't that expensive it would be the perfect toilet bowl cleaner.
getting rid of the rust lmao
What people fail to realize it's that the coke doesn't just sit in your body, and stomach acid is WAY more corrosive than coke could ever hope to be. I don't like coke, but I've seen enough misinformation spread on the internet to not say anything.
Me in the first minute on the video:
"Oh Wow! This would be an incredible chance to get some exposure from The Coca-Cola Company"
*proceed to use Coke to kill rust*
"Maybe not..."
