Santiago, Chile on Monday (30/5) for Erich Honecker, the former
East German leader and architect of the Berlin Wall who died
Sunday in self-imposed exile in Chile. The crowd applauded and
threw red carnations at Honecker's coffin, which was draped in the
flag of former East Germany and escorted by his widow, Margot, and
daughter Sonja. Many of the mourners were Chileans who had lived
in political exile in the former East Germany during Chile's
right-wing military dictatorship under General Augusto Pinochet.

Hundreds if not thousands of chileans were received by GDR during Pinochet's era in Chile, many of them leaders of the socialist party in Chile, included Clodomyro Almeyda or the future president Michelle Bachelet. When Germany tried to start a trial against Honecker he looked for asylum in the chilean embassy. This has to do with latin american countries' tradition to give political asylum, a tradition that has been recognized as a legal practice by international law... this was also why Julian Assange looked for asylum in the Equatorian embassy. For all of this reasons, he ended up in Chile, eing protected by his socialist friends there.
Because East Germany saved lots of chileans from pinochet. So theres a great community that is debt with honecker marriage.

Coz pinochet was an American puppet and anti working class,his regime openly suported business class interest and killed working class,they are slaves under his regime on the other hand GDR was a welfare state and gave free healthcare,education to every citizen,in an ideological perspective I am communist and not a supporter of GDR as I think they choose wrong path of socialism as I believe socialism is the dictatorship of working class,not a party dictatorship and dictatorship of working class should implement in multi socialist party format,there will be no capitalist party,multiple socialist party can exist and contest in fair election in each 5 year to come power of the country,working class can choose the socialist or communist party they like,they should have the right to form communist party and contest in soviet election against rulling communist party, Soviet and GDR failed coz there was no option to change in election,if they had the option they can save the socialist nation and still exist today.

If East Germany were wealthy, he’d have grabbed everything that rickety old soviet death trap eggbeater he flew in would hold and still take off, like the Shah out of Iran in 1979 with a 747 loaded with gold bullion. East Germany was essentially insolvent at the same time the wall was opened. The East Germans were furious when they found this out. It was pure rage from people who trusted their leaders implicitly, under pain of imprisonment. I don’t see how they didn’t expect it, or at least have suspicions, Honecker’s communist party SOLD East Germans to the Federal Republic for around $75000 US per head, unless the prosecutor added more years to the sentence solely to drive the price up. Like chattel, they were sold using formulae to calculate their worth as a human being. Reminds me of slave auctions. They also ordered their troops to shoot people trying to leave. I stand by my earlier comment. He was a dictator. I saw with my own eyes what that locked-up country was really like, and how the communist party’s paranoia made the average citizens life a Kafka-esque nightmare. The left shouldn’t lionize such a man. And I’m an old-school liberal. It’s embarrassing for anyone left of center to think this was a free and just republic and that it’s leaders were great men. They assuredly were not.
