- (30 May 1994) The body of former East German leader Erich Honecker, who died of
cancer on Sunday (29/5) in self-imposed exile in Chile, was to be
cremated on Monday and his ashes dispersed in Germany as he had
requested. Honecker, 81, died of respiratory failure during his
sleep in a private condominium at the foothills of the Andes
Mountains. He had fought a long battle with liver cancer and moved
to Chile in January 1993 after a German court ruled that he was
too sick to stand trial for the killings of those shot trying to
cross the Berlin Wall, which he had built and which was toppled
4-1/2 years ago. He spent six months in jail after Germany won his
extradition from Moscow, where he had fled to in 1991 to escape
charges of manslaughter. His escape and his defiant stay in a
Chilean embassy there enraged east Germans as well as western
politicians. Honecker's widow Margot was joined on Sunday by
friends, relatives and members of Chile's Communist and Socialist
parties, who paid their last respects to the fallen hardline
Communist leader at Santiago's General Cemetery.

Honecker le salvó la vida a muchos chilenos que eran de izquierda. Antes de Pinochet yo era alumno de la escuela de ingeniería U de Chile. Tenía varios compañeros que eran del Mir, pero eran de familias acomodadas de derecha. No entendía porque los hijos políticamente eran tan distintos. Vino el golpe y tres de ellos desaparecieron. Solamente eran partidarios de pensamiento, nunca actuaron físicamente contra el Dictador. 2016 todavía los recuerdo, y no puedo olvidar lo que sufrieron sus padres, por hijos que murieron en manos de los derechistas que ellos apoyaban.

@Social Dissidence Roughly some 200 people were killed during the Berlin Wall's entire existence 1961-1989. Hundreds die every year trying to cross the USA's southern border. There are concentration camps dotted along the border to terrorize those that make it. We also have White Fascists going around shooting 'illegals' for invading 'our' land. Those that get through all that are then exploited at the level of third world labor and risk deportation of them from their families.
Erich Honecker devoted his life in the fight against fascism, imperialism, and monopoly capitalism. Demonizing people like him is why fascists like you are taken seriously.
