- Recently @Drivetanks listed a tank for sale and we took a trip out to do some shopping! I looked at 4 Tanks. 1st, the FV101 Scorpion, this is a road-legal tank with rubber treads, it can go up to 55MPH... a serious contender as sit can fit in my garage! 😬
2nd we looked at the Leopard 1 A4, a museum condition tank a little outside my budget at over 1 million dollars! 3rd, is the T-34-85 a Russian tank that most of us know from video games!
and finally the Leopard 1 A5, similar to the A4 but at only $400,000 it's...relatively more affordable...LOL.

The scorpion is an excellent light tank and the MPG for an armoured vehicle isn't too bad. They were used in the Falklands war and performed really well.

The Scorpion is an excellent daily driver. Getting parts for the Jag motor is probably less expensive than the other optins and relatively easy.
In the turret there is a glow in the dark quandrant - that contains tritium if you break it the tank is considered unservicable. I'd suggest you remove that so you don't have to worry about breaking it and leaking a significant amount of radioactive gas - unless you have a supplhy of 76mm ammo AND intend to shoot at night.

YUP. Actually watched a Sheridan tumble and actually do a somersault during a LAPES at North Army Airfield in SC. Riggers stole the .45 cal grease guns and rigged it to frap in.

I didn’t see a Sheridan get screwed with a heavy drop though, but at Avon Park, Fl, they heavy dropped a Hummer upside down in a pond. It took a tank retriever to get it out.

In 1964 I was 11 yrs old in Cleveland Ohio. My father had a machine shop that did some work for the Cleveland Tank plant. They made Sherman Tanks.
We went over one day to deliver some parts and as we walked thru the plant and seeing tanks in various stages of completion. One guy came up out of a tank and asked me if I would like to see the inside of the tank? I said sure. He picked me up and put me in. Very small inside.😊

Scorpion is from the 17th/21st Lancers, Death or Glory, it also does a bit more than 55mph.
Oh Wow! Not only was the CVR(T) Scorpian the first vehicle I ever learned to drive but this one is from my old Regiment, 17th/21st Lancers. I can't see any Squadron markings, so I don't know if this was one I may have driven. I was in B Squadron, the marking for which was a hollow square. The Scorpian has a bridge limit of 10 tons, not 18. 7 forward gears and a transfer lever to give 7 reverse gears. Gears are changed with your left foot, using a rocker plate.

OMG I LOVE the Scorpion. The surplus store near me had one they were selling for $79000 and it was decked out with a cherry black paint job. Someone had it for a restore project at one time. I've still got a picture of it. Would have been awesome if we had the money for it. Wife said no.... besides, where I wanted to park it was not ideal. We used to live on land that had a natural aquifer.

Daimler Benz did not build a single engine for a Leopard 1A4 or Leopard 1A5; MTU built them. - MTU MB 838 CaM-500 PowerPack
And it's certainly not a Mercedes otherwise either; the Leopard 1, like the Leopard 2, is a Bavarian quality product from Munich. The general contractor for series production was Kraus-Maffei AG, now Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG, a company of KMW+Nexter Defense Systems N.V. (KNDS).
And he forgot the main selling point, German tanks are fuel savers, they don't guzzle fuel like American tanks do.
Total cost of ownership matters.
Leopard 1
985 liters for 562 km road, 386 km light terrain, 246 km heavy terrain
M60
1457 liters for only 500 km road
M60A1 M60A3
1420 liters for only 480 km road
Leopard 2 vs Abrams even worse.
With the fuel you need for one M1 Abrams you can refuel two Leopard 2 and they will go 70 km more on the road and 30 km more off-road.
Guess which MBT you would rather use as a logistician or tactical leader? The version with which you can carry twice the firepower further and you can use the transport capacity you save on fuel to bring additional ammunition and rations to the front or the other one.
Probably better to have two original guns than just one license replica that comes along on just such license tracks.
FV101 is just over 9 tons fully loaded, with the crew inside, not 18 tons. They are aluminum hulled and were specifically made to be able to ship multiple in a C-130. I think he got confused that it is just shy of 18,000 pounds (17,800) and no one thinks that a tank could be that light, so they correct it in their own heads. Technically, it is not a tank, but instead a Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle. How that is different from a light tank is essentially no coaxial machine gun, and that it is not technically supposed to ever fight other tanks. Should also be noted that a fat chunk of the countries that purchased and used either the FV 101 or 107 used it as, and referred to it in classification as, a light tank.
Technically you should be able to get the FV721 Fox for cheaper, but it is definitively an armored car rather than tank because it is a wheeled vehicle, but can go faster that the CVR(T)s ever could (by about 10 mph) due to having the same engine but weighing just shy of a ton less (again, with a vehicle that is 8 tons, a single ton less is a lot) has all the signal lights to make it street legal, though it does only have the 30mm RARDEN instead of the 76mm L23A1. It was the gun that actually lasted though, so good to go on that count.

The smallest tank that you can drive that's fast but is quite your taste is a M8 Greyhound light armored car which is a six wheel drive, drives as fast as 56 mph

It's a MTU engine DRONGO with twin superchargers. no night vision no A/C as the Australians are to cheep with no foresight. However it will kill lot of Kangaroo and sheep and will make pink mist @1000m+ if you don't have Veggie as your gunner.

The scorpion is not a tank, it's a CVRT, combat vehicle reconnaissance tracked... They will do more than 55 MPH.. However, they drink petrol, if you remove the turret it is a lot quicker... Easy engine upgrades too!

The Scorpion (Scimitar and Sabre) aren't actually tanks, they are CVRTs, Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance Tracked, so it's a case of spot the enemy, call in the contact report and then bugger off sharpish!

Hey Alex. Did you happen to buy a British Ferret vehicle? I saw what looked like one on a flatbed at the Flying J at I-20 and Fairfield Rd (Highway 321) in Columbia Sunday.
Haul it on a lowboy. About the same weight and size as excavators that we haul. Get the sherman or the scorpion easier to get parts. Easier to haul.
