If you are an expert point shooter and don't go beyond 15 yards you can dual wield effectively most of the time. Of course I was doing it with a pair of 4" barrel .38 special Ruger Police Service 6 revolvers. Couldn't do it with anything larger or any semi-automatic

Quite a few youtubers have shot a .50 cal thru a 12 gauge shotgun. Brandon Herrera was one.

In terms of wielding two pistols, the only logical advantage is engaging two targets separately at the same time. First time this was an option with video games was Light gun arcade consoles if you wanted to put quarters in both slots. Modern controller or mouse+Keyboard games have both pistols at the same point of aim reticle. VR gaming allows for dual weapon engagement of two targets at once. A cross between instinctual shooting and cowboy/hipfire/holster clear shots it can be viable to separate brain halves and eyes and hands as ambidextrous visual target tracking.. I think my childhood in arcades and VR now hasn't been misspent :P
