- The four of us snowshoed up to Skyline Lake at Stevens Pass, WA for a night of fun and tent comparison. We brought up the Hilleberg Staika and the Allak, two very similar tents. We also brought the MSR Twin Brothers 6 man floorless tent for our group tent. Trigger, the black labrador, also tagged along.
We ran into some great people including another Hilleberg tent owner Henry who was set up in his Keron 3GT. There was another group of very fun people that went out on the lake and did the sparkler dance for our entertainment.
We used a pulk to bring up the extra equipment, mainly camera gear, that was great but the trail was steep and caused a lot of sweat. We had a ton of fun all day, then the talk at night in the group tent/bar was phenomenal.

That was awesome Bruce. A real snowy Wildcamp. I wish we got snow like that over here at least once a year. Loved the disco tent (we call it) good conversation great tent knowledge. It's a winner. Soooo jealous of that camp. No wind. No lost keys. No rain. I dream of them lol. Thanks for taking us out in the snow. Atb
No lost keys but some serious miscalculation of elevation and pack weight. I am trying to come up with a formula so I stop over estimating the trip if you have a good way to do that.
Now that looked like a fun trip. The picture (thumbnail) is incredible. I also really enjoyed the conversation about social media and authenticity. Looks like we came in just a few minutes too late. 😀 I think being genuine and true to yourself isn't discussed enough on CZcams.
Tim Watson Well said sir.
Thanks Tim. Fun to just set up the camera and see what transpires. The group tent really was conducive to a lot of conversation. It was also nice outside so we were up late. Had a lot of fun for sure.
Re: Facebook "... It's like they're listening to us".... 1 year later we know they were scanning our Messenger conversations.
what a great time you guys had. Thank you for taking us along.
That was a hoot. Fun to get out with some younger folks too. Helps keep me young.
Wow what a magical trip, just a fantastic setting, people and gear :)
Thanks for posting this, love the sparklers in the snow :)
Thanks. Perfect weather really. We were socked in fog at the beginning of the hike then emerged into the sunlight at the top. I was surprised that I could get the shot of the sparkler people as they were about 400 feet out on the lake. One of those lucky shots.
thanks for the great video brother keep up the great work. and they are defiantly listening to us...LOL.
Thanks for watching, it turned out to be a fantastic trip. Need to work on my venting. They are really great at listening and sometimes they do adjustments that we may not see, but will keep us safer in the end. Was too bad the Kerlon 600 didn't work out, but I think they made a good choice on not going forward with it.
That looked like a fun trip.
Thanks for the video Bruce
It was a blast. Looked easy on the map but turned out a real sweat run. Would be nice in the summer though.
We smiled through the entire vid. Awesome trip, good people, good times.j&k
Thanks for watching. The 2 of you would have made this trip even more outrageous. Someday.
Your video's never fail to deliver, Thanks for the good time.
Thank you Perry. I wish I would have filmed more on this trip. But that happens. Just get distracted by all the beauty and fun to be had.
Nice one Bruce..TFS..we just need that amount of snow now.. ATB.. R&D :) :)
Thanks. I have been trying but we suddenly got hit with so much snow most of our mountains have been closed for avalanche. It worked out perfect for that weekend with the sun. Beautiful.
Looks like you guys had a great time, thanks for sharing Bruce.
Ernie
Thanks Ernie. Funny how much Trigger likes running around, but then is exhausted once we get home. She did great though in her hunting vest. Great experience all around.
Your best video Bruce in my opinion and a great wildcamp. Fantastic location , gear talk , laughs and good company that's what its all about. ATB Eddie.
Thanks Eddie. Just let the cameras roll and you get a lot of fun stuff. Finally some snow outings like you. Any big summits planned?
Nature Calls Backpacking Got a few summits planned Bruce , big in Scottish terms.
I love the main setup tent, that is so cool... Looks like you guys are having a blast!!! Awesome Bruce
Isn't it great. Kind of a tarp, but a tent. And I really treat it poorly, and will probably cut a hole in it for a stove this next year. A little bright though
It is awesome buddy!!
Cool to see your video Bruce. Nicely done, but you missed the tent graphic, haha just kidding. Glad you captured our philosophical knowledge on a range of great topics. Haha lol. Good times at the snow bar!
Really fun and thanks for the extra footage. Really helped in having some other angles to add.
What an outstanding video Bruce! Had so much fun watching. You met some great people there! Cheers, Marc
Thanks Marc. It turned out perfect. We were all socked in with fog at the start of the trail, then emerged into the sun that stayed the whole time. Jon is also into the filming which added a lot to the material. Everyone we met were all great people especially those who were staying overnight.
Too cool lounge tent had me!!! Great video buddy.
It was a great addition and glad I brought it. I did find out that reflectix is not as good as the thermarest when it comes to sitting on the snow. Slid a lot and wasn't as good in insulating.
Great video and great tents :)!
Thanks. It was real fun to see the Keron right when we got there, then ours went up. Hilleberg central up on the summit. Taking the group tent was really useful too. Really added to the trip.
Good meeting fellow Hilleberg tent owners! It was a pleasure talking to you all! Hope to run into you again! Cheers!
Thanks Henry, glad you found the video and you added a lot. Hope to see you out there again or if I can put together a Hilleberg round up I will let you know.
Please do! See you out there!
Awesome cant beat camping in the snow
It was so nice to have that much snow too. Not just a smattering.
Great video Bruce looks like a good time with friends !
atb john
Thanks John. It was fun to do a couples hike with a fun couple. Lots of activity and talking.
Nice adventure and trip
Thanks for watching. Fun outing for sure.
Absolutely great video. Looks like everyone had a good time. I mostly hammock hang but have been watching your videos for 2/3 person tent. Thanks for all you do with your videos. Take care, Al
Thanks for watching. I hammock also, about half the time. Love them both. Tenting works better with the dog and for changing clothes for the better half. Loving your channel, keep the videos coming.
Any recommendations on a collapsible snow shovel? Broke my snow shovel last trip. Thanks. Al
That is a great question for this video as Jon's shovel failed and was cheap and had a plastic head. Mine was from Costco, 2 for $20 and did a decent job, but when used improperly by one of the group sent me screaming as I didn't see it lasting long. I do like the MSR Responder if I was to buy one as it seems like it has good packability breakdown and is a good company.
Thank you. Have a great day!
Your best film yet Bruce. Looks like you guys and Trigger had a great time. Joined the Hillëberg Owners group on facebook thanks to your audio there. Cheers man. 👍🏼
Thanks Dougie. Still learning a lot on editing, but had a lot to work with as Jon was also filming. Will see you on the Owners site. There is some great knowledge sharing instead of ego boosting as everyone is on the same playing field.
super cool trip!
Thanks for watching. Hoping to get out in the hammock this week. It is nice when the weather is cooperating.
My apologies there is no sound in the middle of the video. Can you please tell me what your opinion is on the two tents, Staika vs Allak 2 wind primarily and over all experience, thanks, G
Sorry, had to delete the music as after 3 years someone claimed the rights. But, I prefer the Allak, the 3 person now that they have one. the nice part of the Staika is it is stronger, the height in the middle is a bit higher, and the vestibules are bigger. When we did the dig outs in the vestibule the Staika was much more usable for more than just standing in. I would go with the Allak personally though.
How does the allak stand up to high wind excess if 50 mph/80kph? Do the poles get damaged? Would it be worth carrying the extra weight of the staika ?
Which tent was better, black label or red?
I liked the size of the Staika better. The Allak would be fine for me as a solo tent but I think the Soulo does a good job. I would like the Staika as a Red Label, but we can't have everything.
That's the problem with Hilleberg, too many options :) I have the Keron 3 and I'm looking at solo size tents and I think the Unna might be the one. However my friend in England has an Akton and she loves it for solo.
Just picked up the Akto and am really looking forward to an outing in it. I am surprised I haven't played with it yet.
what happened to the sound?
I way made hot cookies then u eat m when piping hot
That is a great idea Heidi. How do you cook them?
