There are a couple of rules Queenies insist on. #1 NEVER! NEVER! Interrupt Brian’s guitar solos. #2 Always allow the video to finish. You could miss some interesting endings. Loved your reaction tho and I think you’re going to find yourself amazed at the diversity of their music. I also believe, given what other reactors have experienced, reacting to Queen will gain you many subscribers. Good luck. We’ll be watching.

'Bohemian Rhapsody' was Queen's first music video in 1975 from their 4th album 'A night at the Opera'... The band was confident that this would be a big hit, and they were right... It went to #1 and made Queen a global sensation worldwide after years of obscurity. Their 2nd album 'Queen II' in 1974 had a cover w/ the band members' faces arranged in symmetry... Queen wanted the opening sequence of the music video to have that album 'Queen II' cover come alive... A decade later in 1986, Queen paid homage to that music video by opening the 'One vision' music video w/ the original sequence transform into the then-current image of Queen.
When Queen was signed and released their first album in 1973, people didn't get them because they were ahead of their time... Their music was orchestral, layered and majestic... w/ huge vocal harmonies and fantasy lyrics. 2nd album 'Queen II' was released in 1974 and it didn't sell well either... 3rd album 'Sheer heart attack' was also released in 1974 as Queen were in debt and unable to secure a hit record... they toured America and Europe w/ some fanfare... but it was Japan that made Queen stars in their country by 1975.
However, 1974 did yield a hit single for Queen - a playful, fun track written by Freddie Mercury... 'Killer queen'... and the band appeared on BBC TV for the first time to promote the single. That gave Queen the motivation & direction they needed to move forward on their 4th album.
Freddie Mercury (lead vocals) had this idea that he called a 'mock opera'... He started w/ a piano intro and just kept adding more vocals and more harmonies... Then, came the idea to record an operatic section using the band's vocals... Roger Taylor (drums) did the high vocals and Freddie just kept adding layer after layer of vocals in the studio (The recording tape was wearing out... so they had to copy the track onto a new tape) ...It took 3 weeks and 180 overdubs before 'Bohemian rhapsody' was completed... The album 'A night at the Opera' was the most expensive record made by 1975.
Queen would make no money initially... they had to pay off the costs of making the record first, as well as their past debts...
After 'Bohemian rhapsody' became a phenomenal hit, Queen went from playing clubs to headlining bigger venues overnight... They dressed in flamboyant outfits that got them called 'glam rockers' by the music press (They hated that term)... By 1977, Queen was delivering hit after hit and making the money as well...
By 1980, Queen decided to make some changes musically and began dressing casually onstage... Freddie Mercury was in his 30's and decided to cut his hair short and grew a mustache (His female fans were not happy w/ that change)... They also began recording pop music in the 80's.

Brian’s guitar playing is legendary. He built that “red special”with his father during his teenage years, using “stuff” laying around, and he still has it to this day, though he used many guitars in many songs. And yes, this song is a journey, it’s a rock opera and the first of its kind, they broke into the music world with all kinds of special and unique sounds. No one knew where to place them, they were so versatile. All kinds of different genres. You’ll find out. ;)

Operas back in the 1700's took you on a journey. This is a rock opera that does the same thing. This song is from their album titled A Night at the Opera. The Who also did a rock opera. It was a new concept back in the early 70's.

A few fun facts about Queen:
    * Guitarist Sir Brian May has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and built his electric guitar (Red Special) when he was 17 (with his dad).
    * Bassist John Deacon has a degree in electronics. He designed and built the amp that Brian sometimes uses to create unique sounds on Red Special. John was also involved in the band’s financial management.
    * Drummer Roger Taylor has a degree in biology (pre-med). His vocal range is better than most lead singers of other groups.
    * Lead singer Freddie Mercury has a degree in graphic design. It goes without saying that his vocal range was amazing and he was the best front man of any band.
    * All four have written #1 hits, and all are members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

  • @TheCkent100
    @TheCkent100 Před 7 měsíci +3

The guitarist, Dr. Brian May (yes, he actually has a PhD in Astrophysics from Imperial College in London) sometimes does lead vocals. He did the lead vocal on the song "39" on the "Night at the Opera" album, which is the same album that "Bohemian Rhapsody" comes from. He also shared lead vocal duties with Freddie on the song "Who Wants To Live Forever", which was the love theme from the movie "Highlander". Some people will recommend that you watch the live video for the song, but, in my opinion, you'd be missing out on the two vocalists. The live version is sung entirely by Freddie. I think think that the official video shows the differences between the two voices, which makes for a more powerful song, and just emphasizes how extremely talented this group is.
By the way, the drummer, Roger Taylor, also took lead vocal duties on "I'm In Love With My Car" from "Night At The Opera" as well.

Let it finish. Yes you need to listen to it again. Freddie wrote the entire song and harmonized with himself at the beginning. He is a musical genius but they all are as you will learn. They all have written. Number one songs. They all have college degrees. Brian the guitar player has a PhD in astrophysics and is an animal advocate. He was recently knighted and still plays and Thurs with the remaining member, roger and a new frontman. Freddie passed away from AIDS in 1991.

I loved the dancing pumpkin head figure on the screen! There are several theories about the meaning of Bohemian Rhapsody, but Freddie never explained his lyrics and especially not this one, it remains his secret forever. Freddie had 3 unfinished songs and he put them together into this masterpiece. This was the first music video for promotional purposes. Why is it so famous? It was absolutely uniqe in that era, they played never heard harmonies, they multilayered the vocals (in the first part Freddie is hamonizing with himself), they created an operatic section and who else would have started with this line: "Mama, just killed a man". Pls, check out Somebody To Love at Montreal 81.

  • @IanHodgetts

The iconic imagery of the four band members at the start of this (and subsequently re-done as you saw for "One Vision") was based on the cover of the band's 2nd album "Queen II" (though this song was on their 4th album "A Night at the Opera"). This itself was inspired by a photo of actress Marlene Dietrich.
I'm glad you've already picked up on how talented ALL the band members are (not just focussing on Freddie). It's worth noting that all four wrote hit songs. You probably already know "We Will Rock You" (by guitarist Brian May) but other suggestions would be "Radio Ga Ga" (by drummer Roger Taylor) and "Another One Bites the Dust" (by bassist John Deacon).
P.S. Welcome to the Queen rabbit hole!

  • @Gillie51-bl8su
    @Gillie51-bl8su Před 7 měsíci +3

Thank you for your thoughtful reaction. it was a joy to see the different emotions cross your face as the song shifted from one section to the next. Nobody knows the full meaning of the song. Freddie never explained it, not even to the other members of the band. He apparently said, "It means whatever you think it means."
Watching that video on the BBC programme 'Top of The Pops' back in 1975 was a pivotal moment in my life. From that moment on, I was a dedicated Queen fan. It wasn't the first video made by a band by any means, but it was the first one specifically designed to market the record. And it worked. Straight to number one in the UK, and stayed there for nine weeks.
It's almost like a second national anthem for us. It is said that even now, nearly fifty years since the song came out, more British people know the full lyrics and can sing along to this song than the full version of the national anthem.

    HEYYYY Honey....
Puleeaaze be sure that you play the song allll the way TO THE END! (Instead of cutting it off.)
    Re the harmonies:
The a capella harmonies at the start - even tho it shows all four members "singing"... Is ALL JUST FREDDIE. He recorded himself singing each of five different lines, then overlaid them. (The other guys are just lip syncing that part.)
The middle operatic section was done by overlaying the guys' singing on the master tape 180 TIMES. According to guitarist Brian May, the master tape was virtually see-thru!
Sometime, you should also see a LIVE version of "Bohemian Rhapsody"....
IMHO, the technically BEST live version is at:
    MONTREAL in 1981
    (My personal, "sentimental" FAVORITE is:
    FRIDAY, JULY 11, 1986
    At Wembley Stadium
(If it's the longer video segment, silly Freddie starts out w a plastic bag on his head.)
P.S.....I specified the date because the 1986 Wembley show (aka Wembley Weekend) was comprised of TWO consecutive concerts:
The lesser-known - LESS "politically correct" - first show on Friday, July 11, and....
The more-frequently-reacted-to show on Saturday, July 12.
(I think Saturday is more famous cuz it's the concert that was originally produced/sold on video... Later on, they may have included Friday on DVDs too, IDK.)

I watched your reaction video to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and loved your reaction and appreciation for the song; the jewel that it is from 70s Rock. When I see reactions like yours I feel compelled to drop you a note on the background, context and meaning of Bohemian Rhapsody (BTW, us cool kids call it BoRap for short) from someone back in the day when it came out.
No one actually knows the meaning behind the song as Freddie never told anyone. Not any lover, not any band member. No one. However, good friend and playwright Andrew Lloyd Weber, now a Knight in the Court of England probably hit the true meaning saying he always considered it Freddie’s coming out declaration…..As a queer kid (Bi) in the early 70s, I felt that too when Bo Rap and Queen became my fav song and band. I still love ‘em today at age 63. I have one dog named Freddy, the other is Mercury.
So, when you listen to Bo-rap, realize Freddy et.al., were artists. They understood that their art (Rock & Roll), was no different that paintings, sculptures or any other art; the value is in how the perceiver sees it and how it resonates for them, in their personal experience. And thus, it finds value in your heart.
So when you listen to BoRap again, think about when he wrote this and what he wrote for lyrics for the following is IMHO:
To Freddie, he was living dualistic life in the menagerie of a rock star. He was still with the woman that was and remained the love of his life, Mary Austin. He was flamboyant and falling in and out of love with various male Londoners without even having any sort of relationship with them. So ‘Is this real life or is this just fantasy’ seems appropriate.
When he sings about killing a man, I think he’s talking about killing off his straight persona, where family and fans thought him as str8 and moving into a fully bisexual life. Until his diagnosis with HIV in the mid-late 80s, he maintained intimate relationships with men and women.
And since he was born and raised in Zanzibar and his family was sahasterian, homosexuality was anathema to their life and religion, especially mothers even tho, in reality his father was more of a concern. But fearing he’d hurt his mother, he cries out to her in the lyrics; hoping to not hurt her. So that angst of parental rejection was what he was singing to his mother. In the end, neither his mother nor his father nor his sister loved him less because of who he was.
But he anticipated how the world would view him as a monstrosity and sick pervert. All of us were told that if we’re queer, we’re sick pedophiles looking to groom, rape and corrupt children and recruit them into homosexuality. We were perverse and sick and dirty and vile and disgusting. To the religious, we were often the devil incarnate (see lyric ‘Beelzebub has a devil set aside for me’ in part II bridge to part III). The visage of thunder and lightning being so so frightening is about facing the world’s bigots and homophobes.
Then in part III he sings about people spitting in his eye as he recognizes he’s none of those things people thought of with queer folk. He’s at once man and woman who is forceful and driving. He also sings about people who love his performance but leave him to die. And that lyric is prescient (You think you can love me and leave me to die?!?). Someone with whom he was intimate (loved him) also transmitted to him the virus that would ultimately kill him; AIDS.
Freddie died of AIDS in 1992. Mary Austin, the love of his life (see song Love of My Life) had lived in a bungalow on his mansion grounds. She and his long-term male lover cared for him until his death, as did John and Roger and Brian.

Your journey down the Queen path cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, your journey into great MUSIC of the past cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody!
Bohemian Rhapsody, was released in 1975 on the album "A Night at the Opera" which does give a hint as to the musical genre. Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of opera so this song was written as an operatic suite consisting of five distinct parts: an acapella intro, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock section, and a reflective coda. Generally it is classified as rock-and-roll, but specifically as a "rock opera" and "progressive rock." Truth is, labeling any Queen song, or Queen the band, is next to impossible!
"Bohemian" describes an unconventional, artistic style with freedom and individuality as key elements. "Rhapsody" in musical composition refers to a single work comprised of episodic, diverse pieces arranged into a free-flowing structure designed to heighten emotions. This song came to be because Freddie had pieces of songs he never completed, so he put them together, each section totally different yet masterfully blended into a truly epic masterpiece. It is the band's magnum opus, and is unanimously considered one of the best songs ever written.
As for the meaning of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie was purposefully vague. As with most of the greatest songs, the lyrics are written to be poetic and mysterious. Are they literal or figurative? As separate pieces initially, should the song have a singular meaning? Who knows! The meaning is open to interpretation for each listener to decide, based on how the music and lyrics touched them. You will read comments claiming the song's meaning, but the fact is, the entire band has never stating a specific meaning and has been firm that there isn't one, or if Freddie DID have a specific interpretation, he never shared it.

Speaking of iconic, this video was the first ever music video by any band. Back then you had to go on BBC's Top Of The Pops to get our music noticed. They hated miming (Killer Queen is a classic example) so much that they did this revolutionary thing. Decades later, they were awarded and credited with giving birth to MTV.

Damn bro your analysis of music is top notch. You earned that sub. I said the same exact things as you did. It’s what makes a perfect song.
Idk if you want recommendations on your off time but I strongly suggest Pink Floyd’s the wall. It’s a concept album about the wall we build in our minds to keep us safe, but the bricks are created and laid by our parents, teachers, and authority figures.
I recommend the whole album but if you can only pick one song, it needs to be mother. A perfect song with lyrics about how we place our trust in our parents.

A journey? You want a journey? White Queen (1975 Hammersmith Odeon Christmas Eve LIVE). You will NOT be disappointed. Also Innuendo. there is no live version because Freddie was already nearing death. Both will take you on a wild ride and both are extremely underrated. I'd argue both rival BoRhap as the best song ever. Live Aid of course, anybody who calls them/him/herself a Queen fan and doesn't mention it.. well, they're not a Queen fan. Somebody to Love Live Montreal 1981. I mean, Queen with Freddie Mercury is a journey in & of itself, but most of their setlists and albums are masterpieces. If you truly love what they've done, I'd recommend viewing some of the interviews Freddie gave and the documentaries on Freddie. If you want to see the movie, go for it but don't take it as an absolute bio... calling it a biopic is quite liberal. They made Freddie out to be a drug-addicted slimeball who broke up the band and had the arrogance to say he was the only member of Queen who mattered & who had any real talent.
Freddie Mercury was his work persona, but at home he was private and loved his cats & friends. He was pretty boring when he wasn't Freddie Mercury, he said that so many times. He was a beautiful soul. Welcome to the club, buddy!!!!!

Since you're a newbie I'll let it slide, but never, ever, EVER pause during a Brian May guitar solo. Or anyone else's either for that matter. People take that personally. 😂 Great reaction! I really suggest some of Queen's live performances. Somebody To Love and Save Me in Montreal, Now I'm Here at Wembly, Love Of My Life either in Rio or Wembley (I prefer Wembley), and if you want to break your brain, White Queen at the Hammersmith Odeon. Also, where you cut this video off without letting it finish didn't make you miss much, but they do have songs that definitely are not over when you think they are. March Of The Black Queen is a good example of that.

The unpardonable sin.... stopping a Brian May guitar solo.. you didn't know any better so will be forgiven this time but now you know and please never do it again. Queen fans hate that. Glad you have been exploring Queen. You have so many Queen songs and music from other artists in their time like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and hundreds of others from the 70's which that decade had more talented artists than any other decade in history. If you haven't seen it yet I would suggest watching their live aid concert. It is 20 minutes long but watch the whole thing and all of us Queen fans will watch the whole thing with you even if we have seen it 50 times or more. Another one that will show you a lot about how good Freddy could control a crowd would be Love of my Life Rock in Rio 85. There were over 1.5 million people in the 2 day concert and the crowd sings Freddie's song to him. An ocean of people as far as you can see. One of my favorite songs to watch is the first time Freddie sang You take my breath away in 1975. He sings it by himself because he had just written it and the rest of the band hadn't learned it yet but Freddie's singing is hauntingly beautiful.
