- Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned NATO countries they risk nuclear war if they send troops to Ukraine. He made the threat as he delivered his annual state of the nation address ahead of an election in which he is the only serious candidate. Putin went on to say he'd be stationing more soldiers in Russia's West, close to new NATO members Finland and Sweden.
For more on this, we talk to Jade McGlynn. She's an expert on Russian politics and foreign policy with the Department of War Studies at King's College London.

Putin is failing. Macron just tried to help him understand that he has lost. If Putin thinks he just needs to put a bit more pressure on his army to finally get the upper hand, Macron tells him, the West hasn't even entered the game yet but is prepared to.

I didn’t interpret Putin’s comments presented here as a threat: more of a factual statement of what might happen under certain circumstances. After all, many other NATO countries recognise this reality, which is why they are saying they won’t get directly involved in the conflict.

The question should be how serious is a relatively large (probably the world's largest) nuclear arsenal? One does not possess 5000> nuclear war heads unless one is serious about defence. The US also possesses 5000> nuclear war heads and is thereby also serious about its defence.
Nuclear weapons is all he's left with, he has nothing else to threaten with. It just goes to show his failure and weakness. You don't win a nuclear war.

This is a huge problem between European countries. Nobody accepts losing or compromising. Everybody is trying by using military forces, choking the opponent to death. A small conflict turns into regional conflict, then turns into major wars. Not the same in Asia.

Macron is wing on so many things but not on this, he said he wouldn’t rule out putting boots on the ground, not that he was intending on doing so, they are very different things, Macron was saying never say never!!
Furthermore this wasn't on the agenda in the security conference that had just been held. Macron answered a question from a journalist. And he was right. As no-one can for sure know the future in advance, no-one can for sure rule out any possiblities in advance. Only say that there are or aren't plans for this or that, or it is or isn't likely.
