In this edition of #thedailydoug, Megan is joining me for a 'Woman Wednesday' episode featuring music from Joan Jett. We're picking two of her iconic rock and roll anthems: I Love Rock 'n Roll and I Hate Myself for Loving You. Upon further analysis, both of these songs bear quite striking resemblances to each other, both being in the same key and utilizing a powerful pentatonic minor melody. “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll” was written by New Yorker Alan Merrill who was in the band glam act Arrows (1974-1977). The band was based in London (1974-1977) with two Americans, Merrill (vocals/bass), Jake Hooker (guitar) and English drummer Paul Varley. Joan Jett covered “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll” twice. Her first version was done in 1979 with former Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, & it was the B-side to her single “You Don’t Own Me.” Her 1981 remake with her band the Blackhearts reached #1 in the U.S.A. during the week of March 20, 1982. It was Jett's only #1 song, & it reached #1 in several other countries making it a global hit.
The extended version of this is phenomenal, and much more worthy of your consideration with really good pastiches of contemporary artists.

I saw her open for The Who several years ago. What was funny about that concert was that everyone there was older than 50 except one couple in their 20s. They were looking around like they had mistakenly walked into an AARP convention.
The ticket prices for a band like The Who, "price out", people under 30.

I've seen Joan Jett and The Black Hearts live once and it is one hell of a show!!! So much fun rocking out with 16,000 people. If you get a chance to go see her live don't hesitate!
Joan was heavily influenced by 70's glam rocker Suzi Quatro . Can the Can. Devil Gate Drive. She was even in Happy Days.
The beginning of the song is very reminiscent of British glam rock outfit The Glitter Band.
Jr. High. One of the few rock songs even my mom liked. Joan was old rock mixed with new. Easy couple cords, beat. Hook. Hit. Love you mom.
Saw Joan Jett on her "Up Your Alley" tour, must have been '89, and it was a great show - pure rock! One thing I remember the most though is the drummer in her band, an absolute beast...pounded those skins as hard as any man I've ever seen. Cheers!
I think I joined a legion of women who sang this song. we all know this angst and anger. I was going through a bad break up when this song came out. a special place in my heart. got me moving on. love it. I Hate Myself for Loving you!
Joan starred in a movie with Michael J. Fox called "Light of Day" about a plucky brother and sister duo chasin' their Rock n' Roll dreams. The original title for the film was also going to be the title of an upcoming album for a fairly popular artist, so in exchange for a change of the film title, this artist wrote a song for the movie.

Joan Jett was my first concert . Way back from when I lived near Butte Montana. They had this massive musical festival there called Evil Carnival weekend cause I guess he's from there. I was 13 it was pretty personal up close. On a basketball court type setting .
As a 72 year old rocker I'd long been a fan of Joan then in the late 80s I had the chance to see her and the Blackhearts open for Robert Plant. Let me tell you her show was electric I mean Damn that Lady Rocks.
Joan is the first rock show i ever saw live. got me into rock. Then van halen...i have 19 guitars, i was guitar tech touring. It all joans fault😂 if i could meet here i would tell her thank you. I love rock and roll 45 is still on my juke box.
When I found out Jett dubbed Camille, a metal musician snake in the show "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts" (2020) the cool factor of the show jumped to a thousand.
The foundational structure of ALL Rock 'n Roll (though not all of the offshoots which are still, one way or another, Rock), is pentatonic minor (plus blue notes), over third-less power chords, in some arrangement of I-1V-V.
I dig the way she uses rhyming triplets, rather than couplets in IHMFLY. Not a lot of people can make that work

Per Guitar Player. The creation of “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll” by its songwriter Alan Merrill from the band Arrows: "Arrows needed a fourth single, and Mickie Most, our producer and owner of our label [Rak], suggested I try to come up with something, as our first three singles had been written for us,” he explained. “He said, ‘Think of a simple three-chord rocker with an anthemic sing-along chorus and a great riff.’”Merrill responded to Most’s request with “Shake Me,” a three-chord rocker in a vein similar to “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll,” but the producer rejected it (although it later became a hit for Rick Derringer, with whom Merrill performed in the 1980s).“Mickie said that I was on the right lines, so I went away and came up with the chorus for ‘I Love Rock ’N’ Roll,’”
Merrill explained. “The Stones had just released ‘It’s Only Rock ’n Roll,’ which sounded a bit apologetic to me. I wanted to say it loud and clear. I wrote the riff, the guitar break and the verses that night. I played it for Mickie on an acoustic guitar and he told me that was exactly what he meant.” Although Merrill was the sole writer, Jake Hooker was given a co-writing credit in return for having paid Merrill’s air fare from Tokyo to London in 1974. “I gave him half of the B-side royalties from Arrows’ records, but I was the sole writer on all of the songs,” Merrill said. “Given our level of indebtedness for recording expenses and retainers and whatever, I thought we’d never see any money, as it all went to paying off our debt.”
Initially, Most wanted “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll” as the B-side to the Arrows cut “Broken Down Heart.” Fate intervened when the producer’s wife heard the single and said “I Love Rock ’N’ Roll” was far too good to be a flipside. Most agreed, and he rushed the band back into the studio to record a more powerful version worthy of the A-side. In the studio, Merrill and Hooker handled the song’s electric guitar work.
“Jake was a great rhythm player, but I came up with the riffs and ideas for lead breaks on Arrows’ records,” Merrill said. “I doubled his parts on ‘I Love Rock ’N’ Roll’ and showed him what to play for the brief solo.”
Life has its own way of working things out, and I guess if things hadn’t panned out the way they did, Joan might never have heard the song, not had the hit, and I wouldn’t have the life that I’ve got now. I think the song has earned about 50 million dollars to date in worldwide royalties. Considering that the plane ticket cost Jake a thousand bucks, he got a pretty good return.”

I didn't know this until recently, but I Love Rock and Roll is actually a remake of a song from the 70s by a band called The Arrows.
Listening to all of this great music while watching Doug and Megan headbang, clap and dance in unison just gives me life. I consider "I Hate Myself For Loving You" to be the best song that Joan Jett ever did.
Joan Jett is *the original* Riot Grrrl and is a total badass. I just wish she would come out of the closet already. Joan, we all know. We've known for many years now. If not for yourself, then at least do it for LGBTQIA youth. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

I can remember going to Woolworths when I was a kid to buy her second album. Although this was the lead single (which is a cool song). my favourite track from the album at the time was their cover version of The Dave Clark Five's "Bits And Pieces"...

Well it's been a decade or 5, but it's possible I may have seen Joan and the Runaways or solo at the Fountains in Sea Bright or Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ back in the day.

BTW, Thommy Price (drummer on "Hate Myself...") originally was the drummer for "Scandel" featuring Patty Smythe...maybe another Woman Wednesday? He also played drums for Billy Idol in the mid-80's.

[As an aside, back in '84 my comedy rock band did a parody about the arcade game Roc'n' Rope, you'll never guess what it was based on...]
I'm not sure what the actual number of female inductees in the RnR Hall of Fame is, but it is more than 19. One source (from 2019) says 69 of 888 inductees are female and another (from 2023) said 61 of 719. Perhaps the larger numbers are counting duplicate entries (eg; Eric Clapton has been inducted three times - The Yardbirds, Cream, and as a solo artist; Stevie Nicks is in twice - With Fleetwood Mac and solo). Either way, the number is still small by comparison to the total number of inductees.

There is just not many women who really rock. Joan Jett is one of them. But by far the majority are men.
Joan has such simple songs that are fun to sing. Nothing crazy. What makes them work is her attitude. I like I love Rock N Roll much more than I hate myself. I guess I was into that album much more. But it was such a big hit. The latter was not.

Joan Jett's 'I Love Rock & Roll' is easily as an iconic rock anthem as 'We Will Rock You' by Queen.
Her version of it, yes. Keep in mind that, unlike Queen with "We Will Rock You," Joan Jett didn't write the song.
