Hack job. You see that the shaft is scraped from previously done seal replacement

This is an incorrect way to do these seals! First and foremost, a screw driver never to be wedged between the seal and the housing. It will gouge it badly and not do a proper seal. Second, Yamaha and other outboard companies put 2 seals in there for a reason. One to go face in to keep the gear oil in or coming out and the other one piggy back off the first one facing out to keep the water from going in. In this video, both the seals were installed face out. A lot of the inexperienced boat owners put those seals wrong and lose lower unit oil over time. Very common problem!!

Actually Yamaha prop shaft seals and upper gear case seals are both put in the same direction with the springs facing you. Not opposite. I will agree that the removal was a bit unorthodox. Yamaha service manual for almost every engine I can think of the 2 sets of seals go in the same direction with springs facing outward.

This what is said in the reply. Both seals face the same way. Out and up looking at daylight. Solid bases go in.
