    That’s part of why NBA players make millions. For the grind of the schedule, the practices, press conferences… There’s a lot involved. Still a hell of a lot better than the daily grind that many people have just to make $40k a year. I’ll take being exhausted and rich over exhausted and scraping by any day.

    I know they get paid well, but for every player making 10 million a year, there's 1,000 guys playing semi-pro for like 40k a year, working out and playing ball around the clock, and working at Walmart to pay bills. So once you make it, you know there's 1,000 guys trying to take your job every year. There are a ton of demands on their time, and they are still human.

    I live in the Philippines and we had a 6'10", 350lbs player who got an opportunity to train with an NBA team. He was pretty good here. After just a few months of training in the NBA, he lost a ton of weight and was like warshocked when he got back. The travel, practice and training is killer. WIthout proper trainers and nutrition, you'd just be running on fumes.

    Rookies literally get no time off until after season one. They leave the college game and immediately get ready for the draft a month later, then the draft is late June or early July, then Summer League, then ProAm Circuit, then training camp in late September.

    I can sympathise. I played professionally for two seasons and you are aching all the time. Knee hurting, back hurting. You are tired, fatigued all the time and guess what, you stop enjoying basketball, it becomes a grind. And those were two seasons without any injuries. That must be even harder. Yes, these guys make a lot of money, but they pay a price for it.

    It's extremely difficult, which is why only the best of the best and most talented make it. I give them a lot of props. Most these guys have been hooping hardcore since they were 12 year olds too, so I know they're tired. But hey man- that's life. You gotta grind, and being an NBA player is one of the greatest job in the world.

      No point in explaining to people that being a world class athlete takes hard work. Some people just refuse to accept it. These are the type of people that say Michael Jordan was "just gifted". As if he wasn't putting in work on his own since he was a teenager. Most times it's people who haven't played sports, were just garbage at it and/or didn't have the drive to get better.

      @@Eddybih03 no it's not! Honorable as they are, none of those occupations require the work and talent needed to be a professional athlete. Becoming a surgeon is directionally correct, but anyone with the talent and dedication to become a surgeon is also compensated in the 1%.
      I played D3 soccer, the daily grind and being physically in pain for months at a time is no joke. Definitely harder than being a working adult. Professional athletes have all that, crazy amount of travel and stress of potentially being replaced tomorrow. The majority don't make the millions, or have the job security of the stars.
      If being a professional athlete is so easy, a lot more people would do it! And the average "career" would be longer than 3-5 years.

    I think the players who are trying to fight for a spot, having to go from g/d league to short contracts in the NBA, having to constantly put out 100% in everything they do so they stand out, not knowing if they’ll play another game…. Those are the people I completely agree with that they are grinding and working hard. NBA players who are solid in the nba in terms of their contract, they don’t have to worry about going anywhere, that’s not a “grind” that’s just a job, a job that requires you playing a game and making millions.

    I couldn't imagine how hard it is.. college basketball was tough. Morning classes til 1.. practice at 2.. weights at 5.. sometimes at 5 am.. then you get to your dorm 6ish to eat and then do homework.. from August to march.. then off season til summer.. NBA is a whole other fuckin level. There's a reason why only 4500 people have ever played in the NBA

    Just a friendly reminder is okay to talk about your life in any capacity that you want. Even things you enjoy you can complain about. things you hate especially you can complain about. if people are telling you you're just complaining, guess what you have a right to and at the end of the day it's going to make you feel better. It's not like we're quitting and giving up it's just nice to talk about how hard it is sometimes without being treated like you're weak or otherwise.

    Honestly that's most jobs that people love. Doing the actual core job could be fun. it's the other bs that comes with it. The endless meetings, the time reports, dealing with customers etc. My bro is a graphic designer. He would and does draw for free because he loves it but he only tolerates his job because of all the admin stuff.

    I played baseball up to college and I played basketball and football along the way…I tell my kids to this day that basketball is the most difficult sport in the world to make it professional. There’s only 12 players. You absolutely have to hit the genetic lottery in unique ways and stay healthy and be hyper-competitive and be hyper-devoted and have character. I grew up in Chicago with some freak athletes but so many just had crazy lives. I heard personal stories about certain “stars” and knew they couldn’t play at a high level.

      There are some nba players that didn’t hit the genetic lottery. John Stockton and Steve Nash weren’t big or fast. Some guys can make it because of skill or being a specialist at shooting. But for the most part most nba players are athletic freaks

    I took my GODSON to a basketball training clinic for young teenagers in February 2023. The Coach had the kids doing these drills where they had to pivot and spin to the basket, he was relentless about footwork, for about 1hour I sat there like "damn, I played basketball everyday in the neighborhood most summers in the 1990's, this stuff ain't no joke"!

    It’s one of the most difficult things in the world to achieve, there is quite literally a barrier to entry just off height, so that eliminates 90% of population, then you take into account the fact there is only 400 players out of billions of people, it’s nearly impossible to make it, you have to survive injuries, and beat out competition, and naturally have height by default. It’s incredibly rare, which is why I respect those who make it, and got no respect for those who take it for granted, like bums like Ben simmons

      it’s really not if you have the height, since that knocks out 90% of the competition. trying to make it as a world class soccer player in one of Europe’s top 5 leagues makes getting into the nba look like a side mission. since you aren’t easily disposable in the nba if you start dropping your performances since lack of competition for your spot and only a couple ways to get into the league.

    I've always thought about this. Its a 82 game season + playoffs. They are literally playing every other day. During their days off, they are travelling/practicing/rehabbing. If they are a star player, you get added responsibility of talking to media after every game. They don't have the weekend to look forward to like the rest of us folks. With whatever "free" time they have, the pressure of social media is around, so they gotta be careful with what they do in public, or who might be filming them.
    These dudes might have the fame and all the money, but with it comes a completely different life with its own set of problems. Mad respect for the hoopers out there.

      NBA 2 way contract doesn’t pay much only around $80,000 and you do twice the work. You play in G league game and play NBA game in the same day.

      @@ajye8935 That, and your performance in literally 3 minutes at the end of the game when the lead is either entirely lost or you’re winning by 20, is what decides whether or not you get cut or traded.
      You always hear about the guys who make it but there are probably thousands of guys like Austin Reaves and Lonnie Walker who were just never given a chance. I’m surprised Patrick Beverley can even find teams to sign him, it seems like nobody in the league values straight up hard work and defensive effort anymore.
      It’s even harder than ever to get minutes nowadays since the game basically requires you to be a 6’5+ positionless player and nearly everybody has to be a knockdown shooter unless the rest of your game can massively compensate for it in some way.
