      SSHD is mixed for me. They made so many improvements but the controls are worse bc of the lack of sensor bar. It's probably fine for other people but SS is one of my absolute favourite games of all time so the constant loss of motion calibration was really apparent to me. It's hard to call it the definitive version for me bc of that.

      If it comes to Kirby, then they definitly forgot Adventure on NES into Nightmare in Dreamland on GBA. The Sprite Animations are so smooth.
      But well, it's still hard at times, to say it's an Remake or a Remaster. Because if it comes to this: Metroid Zero Mission fom NES to GBA is also missing on the List, same goes for Metroid 2 Samus Return from GB to 3DS.

    As a fashion player, one of the biggest reasons I adored the Xenoblade 1 remaster is that it lets you set visual character armor separate from what they're actually wearing.
    And a lovely one in WW that no one mentions is being able to swing freely on a rope withtout having to come to a complete stop and turn yourself.
    And omg, doing the Gerudo shooting range on N64 vs. 3DS is so unbelievably night and day.

    I’d say that Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is by far my favorite one here. I mean, not only does the game look way more gorgeous, but comes with an amazing newly arranged soundtrack (even if you can switch to the OG at anytime), plenty of QoL improvements to streamline like the expansion, like a sidequest tracker, bonus EXP and both an easy and hard mode, and a brand new epilogue to boot. It’s by far the definitive version of XC1 and what I’d reccomend to anyone who hasn’t played the series. The more recent Paper Mario TTYD is also great for similar reasons, and with how much effort and production value is put behind it, it almost feels like a new Paper Mario game despite being baswd on an old one. And I can hope that if it proves successful, Nintendo returns to this style of gameplay due to being where the series hit its peak by far.

    Super Mario Advance 1 is actually, by far, my favourite of the GBA Mario ports. I feel the subseries' controversial voice clips are a particularly good fit for SMB2's silly, whimsical personality, but it's the balancing tweaks that really carry it for me. It's far easier to find 1-ups and extra hearts than in any of the previous versions of the game. The Yoshi egg hunt adds a crucial new level of replay value that really incentivises searching for subspace locations in a way the previous releases lacked. They also swap out one of the samey Birdo bosses with a mecha version ("Robirdo"), and that's a fantastic tweak. From the FDS Doki Doki Panic, to the NES SMB2, to Super Mario USA, to the All-Stars version, to the Satellaview version, to SMA, Mario 2 was one of the most thoroughly revisited games Nintendo ever made, and I think they nailed it with Advance. Its vibrancy and creativity really shine, and I argue it puts it in genuine competition with 3 and World.
    SMBDX on the GBC took similar pains to elevate the original, but the limited screen space really holds it back. I'd love to see them revisit that content on a system that can display SMB1 comfortably.

      It does look pretty good when seen on it's own. The problem is that to achieve its vibrant lighting, it basically overwrote what pulled the whole game's art style together. I feel like that's precisely what a good visual remaster should *not* do.
      I never really understood all the talk about the game's cel shading being so cool until i saw what the original looked like. It honestly didn't even need an upgrade, it still looks awesome, and i say this as someone who prefers TP and is REALLY tired of WW fans never shutting up about TP's art style "not standing the test of time" (Seriously what's the point of the whole "WW is misunderstood" thing if you're gonna act the same way about the next game just because it isn't WW)
      In comparison, i'm not sure if HD even has cel shading or just minimal anti-aliasing shadows... It even uses blurry shadows a lot of the time, and coupled with its promotional artwork, it seems like they didn't even want the game to look like a cartoon. It still looks nice, but honestly, i identify it more with a modern Paper Mario game than a drawing a lot of the time.

    Honestly, if we see another release of Twilight Princess on Switch or Switch 2, I really hope it gets a Prime-style geometry upgrade, because it really needs it. Honestly, even as someone who didn’t really grow up with the game (though I was able to play through most of the Wii version a few years before HD) I’ve always felt that the HD textures actually end up being pretty unflattering for most of the game. Wind Waker and Skyward sword both have the benefit of a lot of “chunkier” designs that can have their textures scaled up without feeling out of place, but for Twilight Princess it feels like upping the detail in one specific aspect of the models just ends up emphasizing how much the geometry isn’t showing that detail. If you’re playing it in pretty much any connection better than composite video I feel like the original version’s cohesion to its visuals makes it much more appealing to me overall.
    Also, I’ve only ever seen like one other person talk about it, but can we also talk about the input delay in certain actions? The original already has delays to things like sword swings to make it easier to charge a spin attack, so even that little bit of extra really goes a long way to make the game feel less responsive. I was even able to boot up the Wii version on the same TV and get proof it was more responsive.
    Honestly, not to be dramatic, but despite how much I see people like Jon sing it’s praises, I’d find it pretty hard to recommend the HD version over the original if you have the option.

The original I think had the second best cell shaded look (the original Jet Set Radio will remain my favourite) and the updated lighting in HD ruins it. I much prefer the GameCube version.

However, I just wish there was an option to toggle the R button function from camera control to your sword attacks instead. Pretty much every single time I simply wanted to move the camera, I accidentally whipped my sword out by mistake. In the end, I just went back to motion controls.

    It ain't just that remasters sometimes remove things that you liked, sometimes they are also buggier because by messing with the game code and changing ONE thing for the "better" they change something else for the worse. Because video game code is a feeble thing. If you change even ONE thing it can have a technical chain reaction and fuck up something seemingly unrelated elsewhere.
    That's also why sometimes "garbage" from when the game was in development is hidden away somewhere in the background that you would never see unless you use cheat devices to access it, because while I would personally love for a game to be completely "cleaned up" before shipping, some of these leftover assets are kept in because removing them would mess up something in the finished product.

    Excluding the fantastic Wii point controls for Pikmin(&2 ...& RE4) and the Metroid Switch dual stick controls, I tend to prefer the original hardware over remasters and ports, mainly down to feel. Particularly games from Dreamcast and N64. Most consistent example being all the Sonic Adventure director's cut and HD versions- I found them unplayable for all the bad camera, odd hit detection, invisible wall glitchy-ness that the game is known for but never had an issue with the original. I put this down to time and putting up with more back in the day but playing on the Dreamcast recently, it is still flawed but much better and more responsive feeling than the later versions.

    honestly, even as a huge xenoblade fan and somebody who loves XCDE, i think people give the remaster way more credit than it really deserves. it's great and looks fantastic no doubt, but i'd put it moreso along the lines of WWHD, where there were really just a few big changes to specific aspects of the visuals that had a large impact across the whole game. a lot of models for enemies were left largely untouched outside of added specular highlights and normal maps (i forget the exact name, it's been a minute, but that giant boar-dinosaur thing in makna forest looks largely untouched from the wii original, as one example), sometimes you'll see higher resolution textures but even that's kind of hit or miss with things that aren't prominently featured in story cutscenes.
    what's interesting to me is that, despite this, there's actually *more* that's been done to the game than i initially gave it credit for, but part of why i didn't notice is because, while improved, certain things aren't really improved to a very modern standard. a lot of armor sets for characters have additional geometry, but less so in a way that makes it look better during normal gameplay and moreso to smooth over small things that could look odd in specific circumstances. like, where sleeves had no thickness in the wii version, resulting in the occasional situation where a character pointing their arm towards the camera exposes the paper thin nature of the armor models, they were updated to have thickness and some internal geometry, but they still largely look like assets right out of a wii game. in fact, this inconsistent updating of assets sometimes creates this weird disconnect where a ps4 grade model with smooth geometry and high resolution textures is juxtaposed with a less important object which by comparison, though fine and unobtrusive in the original, now looks blocky and muddy.
    all of my old man grumbling aside, it's still the definitive way of playing the game, even if only for the inclusion of Expert Mode. the original had this ever present problem where you kinda had to choose between having an enjoyable challenge in combat and engaging with side content, because if you did too many sidequests you'd quickly become overleveled. being able to freely level down when things get too easy (and i mean *any time,* not just from an inn or campfire in NG+ like in 2/3) then bumping yourself back up to where you were when you just wanna move on makes the side content and any endgame content WAY more enjoyable!

    • @joebilly3719
      @joebilly3719 Před měsícem

      disagee, you are vasty[ly underselling all the addition. Its QoLs surpassed even hat was displayed in Torna the golden country. The video also failed to mention the time attack which is straight up a land of challenge equivalent from 2 DLC. Future Connected can give 20+ hours of game if you go for sidequests (which are as great as in torna, but without forcing us to do them), and unlike what Jon implied, it is thats to Future Connected story that we got the foreshadowing of 1 and 2 universes merging (otherwise, 3 setup will feel a bit out of nowhere), and showed that melia becaomes Queen, and we can see how relevant this was because 2 did not get a epilogue DLC, and as such, and Nia is shown as Queen it feels out of nowhere.
      1DE together with metroid prime are easily the best remasters to come from Nintendo and Jon lost his mind when making this rank.

    • @creativealias85
      @creativealias85 Před měsícem

      @@joebilly3719 yeah there's for sure more than what i mentioned, but i don't think that all adds much. time attack is a fun bonus, but goes nowhere near as in depth as its equivalent in 2. at best it's a nice little distraction, where in 2 it could provide endless entertainment for dedicated players. note that the superbosses in xcde's time attack are neutered in certain aspects.
      future connected honestly wasn't much of a plus to me. its writing, direction, and tone all felt far worse than the base game, and it gameplay felt like an afterthought. where torna had a fully revised combat system from base game 2 and fully new character archetypes to use and experiment with, FC felt more like a pretty good fangame, essentially just reskinning sharla and reyn for the nopon and not having a team which synergizes well in combat. i suppose it's better to have it than to not have it, but to me it felt like i had finished a 5 star meal only to be handed a mcdonalds burger as a "bonus". like, sure it's better than not getting it, but was that really supposed to be the exciting new addition?
