I had a roommate that was super messy and we knew it immediately when she moved in. She was also paranoid that we would steal all her food.(she never had roommates before). So she had put a padlock on her cabinet in the kitchen so No one could access it. Shortly after she moved in she went on vacation with her family and left a ton of vegetables and fruit inside her locker cabinet. The rest of us came home to find flys around by the cabinet and roaches hanging out so we ended up having to get maintenance to break the cabinet open so we could clean it And toss the food. We even replaced the food that we had to throw away for her but when we told her what happened she freaked out that we violated her property and privacy. Like what were we supposed to do? Let an infestation start? A few months later I came from work super sick running bad fever and barely able to breathe from my asthma. It was like 1am and our dorms had a curfew of midnight for guests to be over. But she had her boyfriend over and locked me out of her shared bedroom. Normally I would just sleep on the couch when she did that no big deal but I needed my inhaler since I couldn’t breathe so I knocked and tried to tell her I needed my inhaler and she ignored me. I could hear her awake and laughing with her bf too so i knew she could hear me. I ended up having to call our campus security to come unlock the door and kick her boyfriend out. Well she got pissed about that even though I wasn’t doing it to be a bitch I physically couldn’t breathe. So I had taken a NyQuil after getting my inhaler to help with the fever and was dead asleep and the BITCH CUT MY HAIR. yup. My hair is normally in braids when I sleep so she couldn’t get to the full thing thankfully but she cut off a chunk of the front of my hair to the scalp so i couldn’t even trim the hair around it or fix it. When I went to room administration they told me since there was only 4 weeks left of the semester before moving out they couldn’t move me even though I felt like my life was in danger.

I’m sorry, but the University was way out of line for not letting you know this girl had mental illnesses and that some certain things/behaviors may trigger her, LET ALONE the fact that they are putting this girl in a situation which she clearly could not handle. She is 25 👏🏼 years 👏🏼 old 👏🏼. Let her live alone in an environment in which she has control and feels safe! Don’t just crowd her in with young girls learning to live alone for the first time in their lives! It’s not healthy for her or for them. It creates discomfort, guilt, shame, and anxiety. Yikes

I completely agree with you but it's a legal issue to dispose someone else's medical records without their consent. That would hold the university back no matter what and it does seem like a disadvantage to everyone involved.

I feel bad for “Alex” because to me it seems that she didn’t have the professional help she needed. I think it was kind of wrong of the college to let her stay in a normal dorm and not even tell the other girls of the situation, mainly seen that she obviously gets really nervous being around people. I also don’t think she should be left alone in her own apartment. She deserved a lot more attention from the school than what she got...

That sounds quite irresponsible of the RA/uni... you guys were put in an unfair and uncomfortable position and so was she. Sounds like none of you were given the support or info you should have had. I’m a mental health worker and I picked up on quite a few signs before you mentioned mental health issues. Awareness, flexibility, and acceptance are important but it shouldn’t negatively impact your comfort and safety in your own home.
    - A lot of the mean/antisocial behaviour you mentioned is self protective/defensive behaviour and you should try not to take things to heart (I know that can be hard) 💕

RAs/university housing programs can only do so much for their students, especially since there are so many legal contracts and things that are put in place to protect the residents' privacy. However, as an RA myself, I think the RA should've gotten involved sooner and possibly had a suite meeting every so often to check in and make sure the "rules" y'all agreed on were being followed. Believe me, that RA probably wishes they could've done more but we really don't get a lot of "power" or say in situations like these.

    • @jenniepreci5750
      @jenniepreci5750 Před 4 lety +15

I agree with this. If something was off from the beginning, it should have been addressed earlier, especially when having people over and not complying with chores in a dorm because after a while it really mounds on itself. I had a crazy roommate last semester who had depression and other issues which I relate to because I also have depression. She started off nice and then she quit her job, stopped going to class, and eventually dropped out of school as a freshman then decided to blame me for her leaving school. Which was just a scapegoat considering she opened up and told me she didn't like school and had other stuff going on. She went behind my back and started making the room extra cold in around March then would never let me turn the heat on. She would scream at me for studying at like 9pm. It was obvious she had some serious issues and sometimes they arent addressed correctly, and it get very fustrating after a while. :(

I understand the University not sharing her personal information, but she obviously had a severe mental illness and it’s not fair to you guys to go in blind and not know what you’re dealing with and how to deal with it.

I had a college roommate who without asking me put my desk at a weird angle so she could make a private cubby space for herself. We had a shelving unit hinged to the back of our desk so it formed a 5 foot wall. I looked over the top of my shelving unit to see what she had set up. The space was very dark as she blocked out all light. I don’t know how she could have worked like that.

As someone who KNOWS and still experiences social anxiety I can almost confirm that that is what she had. The thing people don't realize about social anxiety is that when it is really bad, it makes you second guess even sending someone a text message. Yes texting someone feels almost feels crippling, and you beat yourself up for it. However kudos to you for trying your best to make the experience comfortable for her. You seem very sweet!

Years later, I found out what was happening to me, and I'm learning to handle it. I have to take every day one at a time, sometimes even one hour or one minute at a time. It's really just the protocols and regulations your university's housing program puts onto RAs, which are just to protect the privacy of the residents. Believe me, we wish we could do more but we really don't get a lot of "power" or say in situations like these. We are basically meant to serve as a mediator between upper housing and the residents :)

You have a big heart. Kutos to you for having compassion for Alex despite what y'all went through. I had horrible roommates my freshman year too, so I can totally relate. My roommates wertwin sisters who pretty much isolated themselves from the rest of the people in the dorm. Theystantly leave their trash everywhere, and our sink was filled to the brim every week with dirty dishes.I'm surprised we didn't have a roach infestation. LOL
Anyway, one time I came back from my weekend home, and the living area looked like it had been ransack and there were empty beer cans everywhere. My godfather had given me this baskedtf kittens that would meow everytime you tapped them, and the kittens' heads had been snapped off. o this day I'm not sure if they did it themselves or some of their friends had done it when they were drunk,er that happened my boyfriend (who was older and in grad school) felt that I wasn't safe living there anymore, so he moved me in with him off campus. :)

My freshman year of college I lived in an on campus apartment so I had someone living in my room with me. She was very quiet and hardly talked and never wanted to hang out with us. Her boyfriend lived in the same building a couple units down from us. He was always over and was a scary guy. She was always trying to tell us what to do even though she was never around. One day after class my other suite mates, a couple of our other friends and I were venting about how hard it was living there sometimes and none of us realized she was laying in bed and heard everything we were saying so she got up and stormed out. Luckily we were going on a break but that last day I was terrified all day because I had a class with her boyfriend and I was convinced he was going to jump me after class so I had one of my guy friends follow me out of class and then take me back to my apartment. He even stayed until we all left to go home just to be safe.

Ugh I’ve dealt with something similar. The roommate had borderline personality disorder (and not saying all people with this act like this or are like this) things were normal for like two weeks and then on the third week things just turned sour out of nowhere and she started having an episode or something and starting being very hostile with my bf and I. After I spent a day with my best friend on the weekend she criticized me for that. She was really rude for no reason while we were being civil and kept saying we were being rude and hostile. On the last day she got mad about something and because of that unplugged the router. My bf texted asking if she was trying to punish us and she was like I was just trying to get your attention in rude way. And then after this he texted back saying that’s fine I’ll just use my hotspot. I told him he shouldn’t have done that because the whole last two days I felt a very unstable and anxious energy in the house from this woman and I had planned exit routes in case something happened. Well after he texted that I heard her footsteps running to our locked door and she started pounding super hard on our door to the point where it was shaking. I thought she was literally going to break it down and murder us. That’s how scary it was. So above the bed was this window and I had it in mind as an escape route before and jumped out of it. I told my bf to come while standing outside the window but he stayed and remained calm. After she stopped he opened the door and told her to calm down and that this behavior was not okay. I told him to stop and I kept yelling that it’s okay we are leaving tonight and I kept repeating it loudly so she could hear me. I was shouting this through the window from outside. So she went to her room and I started panicking in the room. We immediately left, and then came back with a moving truck, got our stuff out, put it in storage, and booked a motel till we found another place. It was honestly kinda traumatizing tbh after we drove away from the place with my car on the way to the u-haul I literally was crying because it was so scary. It took me a week to really get rid of that paranoia that someone was going to pound on my door and try to break into my room. Crazy people really are more common then you think, so you gotta be cautious of people. Definitely a lesson and a wake up call

as someone with three mental illnesses, the RA is doing a shit job. We should not be enabled or excused for our actions because of the illnesses we have. I always feel bad if I project my irritation (symptom of depression) onto people. Sometimes when you are depressed you can get really mean and I literally never excused myself. I had to take responsibility.

Honestly this right here is why I do my own thing. I’m not a fan of communal anything with strangers because there’s always some problem. I never had to share a bathroom but when I shared a kitchen I just bought my own stuff and I didn’t bother over complicating things by trying to involve my flatmates.

My freshman year (I'm a 5th year now) my roommate and I picked each other from our incoming year's Fb group and we hit it off pretty well as friends and roommates. Eventually one of our mutual guy friends started camping in our dorm basically every day to do hw w/her which is fine but not at 3am when I want to sleep. Basically we ended up hating each other, she *forced* me to change my alarm ringtone because it bothered her sleep 7 times, got mad at me for waking up at 7 to catch a plane, and she left trash literally EVERYWHERE in the middle of the dorm... My sorority friends ended up letting me sleep on the house's comfy couches if I needed (and I wasn't even a member back then)

I have social anxiety, but didn’t know it or understand it until recently... In college I tried living with roommates and I’m sure I seemed like the crazy one. (That was also a different/more triggering situation because they had parties, like real parties with 10-20 people at all hours). But they wanted me to ‘just be normal or just get over it’ and I didn’t have a grasp on my mental health at that time. Some of these comments are pretty harsh. As someone who struggles with social anxiety and depression... I feel for the girl. Always be kind. You never know what someone has gone through or is going through! ✌🏻❤️❤️❤️😀

Lived in a quad freshman year of college and I got REALLY close with 2 of my roommates right off the bat (and still close to them today) while the 4th roommate was strange/out there. Some of the stuff she did made me and my other roommates questioned things. Strange roommate would lay in her bed with her male friends....make out with one of said male friends (literally walked in when they did and was MAD uncomfortable)....and a handful of odd stuff. I do have to say I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have Lauren as my college roommate (or just a roommate in general!!) I LOVE to have the general areas match and have similar colors.

on the other hand... mental illnesses are very, very complex and even the same M.I. changes a lot based on the person. Their actions and thoughts may seem extremely weird and ridiculous to you, but in their own heads something completely different is going on. I'm sorry this happened to you, but also I honestly don't see this as a "horror story". It's a very different experience though for sure. I feel for this girl, and I hope she is seeking help.
