How to 'Self-Test' a Gen for ATS Remote-Start AUTO Function | Automatic Changeover Installation

    Demonstration on how to connect an ATS to a Type1 Genset with "Remote Start" functions.
    During an installation, before Gen-control (Remote-start) connection is made from a Genset to an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or Automatic Changeover Switch (ACS), it is often necessary to first check the generator's controller module and confirm or 'Self-test' the "AUTO" or STANDBY mode functionality.
    A failed test means the Gen may not be able to respond to a START or STOP command from the ATS.
    However, if the Gen Auto mode self-test is successful, the Generator can be connected successfully to the control circuit of an ATS to achieve seamless Power Management Automation (Automatic power transfer along with automatic Gen Start/Stop control action) depending on Mains availability or User command.

    2. Generator Scheduled Operation Timing (Gen Sc Timer): Starts and Stops Gen on scheduled days or time. Can be used to rotate the operation of 2 or more Generators. For instance, automatically run Big Gen at daytime from 8am to 9pm Mon-Fri., also, automatically run Small Gen at night from 9pm to 7am.
    3. Gen Wireless Ignition Control (G-WIC): This adds Wirelss Remote Control functionality to your ATS-Gen connection allowing you to remotely control your generator wirelessly from the comfort of your Sitting room while at the same time allowing your ATS to do its power automation magic.
    4.     A good show of how to test . I have some concerns . I noticed that when the signal was removed the generator stopped within a few seconds. this is bad for the generator if it was at a heavy load before the load was transferred and signal removed. some ATS units will delay the signal to stop after a few minutes of transferring the load away and that is good. however there are parameters for cooling times that can be set in the deep sea unit to allow a cooling time before switching off the engine when generator is not needed any more. this would be a better way . just saying . All good . Ade.

      We appreciate your contribution. Your expectations are correct and we are also aware of the expected "Cool down then shut down" delay you mentioned. I must remind you that as shown in the video, the ATS is yet to be installed as it was still on the ground awaiting installation. So, as the title of the video goes, whatever response or reaction we got from the Gen was strictly on the Gen's self test basis and not through the ATS, meaning the Gen was responding to stimulus based on the OEM (Manufacturer's) programming on the DeepSea Controller which co-ordinates the operation of the generator.
      That said, I must however mention that the Gen shut down immediately because the controller was programmed to enter into cool down then shut down mode if it operates for up to at least 2 minutes (and ON LOAD), otherwise if it cold-started and runs for less than 2 minutes without load, when given the shut down command, it will omit the cool down then shut down sequence and shut down immediately instead.
      Interestingly, if a Diesel Gen had run for as little as 3 minutes on load and a shut down command is issued by the ATS after a transfer to Mains supply has been made, some Generators have been programmed to observe a cool down duration of up to 5 minutes or more of free run (idling) before they finally shut down. Although this seemingly excessive cool down delay could be both embarrassing and inconvenient to many Gen owners (Diesel costs are too high these days, understandably), manufacturers advise that the long cool down delay is good for the health of the engine. So, it is more of a balancing act as the delay timing could be adjusted if absolutely necessary.

    Thanks I appreciate this video,but every AUTO,GEN ENGINE have their own DSE design,so for example JMG Diesel Engine,hw do u locate the ATS vacant point to start the MODULE

      Thanks for your question. Usually, the Remote-Start terminals are indicated in the Generator's User Manual as published by the Generator's manufacturer. Alternately, once you have the Gen Controller Module's details (Name & Model Number), you could do a Google search for the Remote Start terminals. However, it is always better to consult the manufacturer's manual.

      Thanks for stopping by, @Teshome. JCB is the merchant's brand. You need the details of the Generator's controller module (Name & Model Number) to be able to identify its correct terminals (Remote-Start). I can see you got one of the details right, DSE (Deep Sea Electronics), that's the module's name. Now, you need the module's model number as well. Are you able to get that as well?

      Remote-Start terminals differ from one Gen brand to other brands. For this particular model, they are terminals 21 and 5.
