When I was in high school I played against Emmitt Smith (yes, NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith). I happened to tackle him, catching one of his knees in the side of my helmet, and my ears were still ringing on the bus ride home after the game. Haha. We didn't really know anything about concussions in the '80s so I never even mentioned it to the coaches. Ah, to be a teenager (and stupid) again. ;-) Stay safe everyone. Cheers from Florida.

Hitting your opponent when they are helpess, when they don't have the ball, with the crown of your helmet ANYWHERE on their body, hitting at or above shoulder level, horse collar tackels, hitting QB below the waist, chop blocks to the knees are all illegal. Can get you ejected for targeting/unsportsmsnlike conduct or both. The smack is the sound of helmets colliding. You want brutal? Look up hospital passes, when the qb throws the ball to where a recover WILL take a head on collision trying to catch it. Sometimes from 2 defenders at once. Hitting a player who is sliding IS hitting a defenseless player.

  • @christophermckinney3924

There is physics, strategy, and psychology to hitting people hard on the field. The physics involved essentially requires you to hit as hard as you can. The person moving faster at the point of impact will be the one causing the pain and the person moving slower will be the one feeling the pain. If you know you're about to be hit and you're defenseless and cannot get the force going to cause pain to the other person, the smart thing to do is be off the round a little bit, then you're a bit like a ragdoll and you just sort of bounce off. The worst is when you're moving slowly toward someone moving fast and you're on the ground. Strategically, if you LEGALLY hit someone hard enough to knock the ball from their hands you will either cause an incomplete pass or a fumble. Both of which are good for the defense. Psychologically, when a receiver is defenseless and coming across the middle of the field and you knock him senseless, he is going to be looking more at you than the ball then next time he comes across the field. That's when passes get dropped, or fumbles happen, and it can be the difference in games over the long term.

Internationals like to jab at American football players for playing with pads and helmets while Rugby players do not. It's for a reason. Football hits can have massive velocity behind them, Rugby is a hardcore sport in its own right but the collisions are not at the same high speeds. Also, most of these clips are illegal hits to today's standards and for more good reason. There is a rule now called 'defenseless receiver' that makes all those anticipatory big hits illegal. Game is a lot different now. Many of those hits are scary and life changing in the video :/
