  • TMF Xtra Soulmax Interview - November 1999. Prince Rogers Nelson, born on June 7, 1958, was a pioneering American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. Renowned for his exceptional musical talents and innovative artistry, Prince became a symbol of creativity and originality in the music industry. He possessed a wide vocal range, from falsetto to high-pitched screams, and was a master of multiple instruments, often playing most, if not all, of the instruments on his recordings. His music seamlessly blended various genres such as funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, blues, and hip-hop, giving rise to the iconic "Minneapolis sound."
    Starting his career by signing with Warner Bros. Records at 19, Prince's early albums like "For You" (1978) and "Prince" (1979) laid the foundation for his future success. He gained critical acclaim with influential albums like "Dirty Mind" (1980), "Controversy" (1981), and "1999" (1982). His sixth album, "Purple Rain" (1984), recorded with his backing band the Revolution, not only marked a commercial triumph but also spawned a film of the same name, further solidifying his superstar status. The album spent an impressive six months atop the Billboard 200 chart and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
    Prince's boundary-pushing career was marked by his enigmatic persona. During a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in the 1990s, he changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, leading to his moniker "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince." His creative journey continued with albums like "Sign o' the Times" (1987), celebrated as one of his best works.
    Tragically, Prince passed away at the age of 57 in April 2016 due to an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park home and recording studio. Throughout his life, he released 39 albums and left behind a wealth of unreleased material, including completed albums and music videos. Posthumously, albums like "Piano and a Microphone 1983" (2018) and "Originals" (2019) garnered critical acclaim.

    YES! I agree with Prince on playing with actual musicians, although a musician’s instrument can be a computer.

    Why should Prince "The GREATEST EVER" have to give his music away for FREE? These interviewers we're uninformed and didn't do their homework about the industry beforehand.

    Must've been pretty scary to ask the right questions without feeling or sounding like an idiot. Glad the guys got through it OK.

      @shallnot6043 with no disrespect to your comment I'm a Minneapolis kid and that's Prince's normal talking voice he's not over doing anything.

    I think Prince was very kind to these guys. He gently got his point across that made so much sense and was very informative.

    This arrived in my feed tonight, and wow. Essential for the Rave Y2K era, the quality from the original video tapes of this interview are superb. Thank you very much, had not seen or known of this.
    Free means music is not worth anything. Yet bootleggers... they say, don't pay for the boot we're releasing... now, they used to charge a grip, at least the used record stores, swap meets we'd find them back then, but then it became about releasing in this case, Prince's unreleased music and performances... and then as if they owned them, HIM, really, declare, that oh, it's free. How wonderful. And they still do it. Including certain fans on social media like CZcams. Strange But True.

    I love Prince, but the technology has changed dramatically , Prince was still recording in analog at the time of the interview , when digital has been the new way 2 record music .
    None the less, Prince is the man and no one can touch his shit.

    • @cryptozoomauler5505
      @cryptozoomauler5505 Před 10 měsíci +5

      That doesn't explain why the music sounded so much better back then than it does now..and all the new remasters from 2010s onward of classic songs tend to not be as good.

    • @216Numbskull
      @216Numbskull Před 3 měsíci

      @@cryptozoomauler5505 Well the easiest explanation why music recorded in "analog" sounds better to us than music recorded in "digital" is simple. The human ear is also "analog." You can't fake the funk, ya dig? Blah,ha!! 😂🤣 +Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😜🤘

    A truly master who knows everything about the trend but doesn’t give a f**k. His “stubborn” was the most obvious thing to tell us that our generation are too shit, with no patient to learn the whole theory of music.
